Why New York's BEST Point Guard EVER! Rod Strickland Was Never An Allstar!

Stunted Growth

Күн бұрын

Rod Strickland was an original in the sport of basketball. He's credited by many for having some of the best handles ever, and is actually one of the greatest passers of all time. Many compare Kyrie Irving's finishing to his like all east coast point guard are. That's how good he was. He had everything you'd want from a point guard, but for some reasons some may see him as a disappointment. Do you? Why isn't he mentioned with some of the best point men of all time? And are New York City point guards hindered by the same things?

I still remember Strickland's behind the back pass that would've connected with Sean Elliot if he'd cut to the basket, but instead became a turnover That play was pretty much a metaphor of what should've been a hall of fame career for Strickland 💯
@thomasshaw3001
@thomasshaw3001 3 жыл бұрын
That was the prettiest pass EVER thrown in my opinion ! No disrespect to any of the other great PG passers in the NBA but if you watch that play, if Sean Elliot had kept running, he would've caught that pass, in stride, & could've scored any way he saw for ! And after throwing it, Hot Rod could've continued on downcourt ready to turn & play defense. Sweetest pass never converted.

Good video. When he came to Chicago to DePaul, next to Walter Payton he was my favorite city sports figure, and yes even over MJ. He was electric at Depaul, even though as you mentioned, he couldn't shoot, but he could get streaky. After losing to Duke in the tournament one year, I remember Johnny Dawkins giving him high praise and I believe he was a senior. I hadn't realized he missed so many games during his pro career. I guess now I could see why he never many any all-star teams. Yet and still, his play usually spoke for itself as someone who could and would find the open man, as well as his tenacity to drive to the cup. Before giving up basketball for baseball, I learned how to strip/block the shooter going up from him, it was like an overheard swipe type of move. And lastly, I'll never forget the commercial with him, "The Rod and Roll." I think it was with nike

With the exception of Mark Jackson, most of all the other prominent New York point guards had a lot of off the court issues stemming from the environment they grew up in or the people they chose to surround themselves with. Unfortunately these off the court issues bled into their on the court personas and they never reached the heights their respective talents should have taken them. Strick was one of the best floor generals and passers in the NBA during the 90’s. He also was one of the best finishers from the point guard position that we have seen since DRose and Kyrie. However he also had a jumper that was not existent outside of the midrange and he bounced around the league a lot. All in all he had a very solid career and he is someone that both his contemporaries and current players give mad respect to but he just always left you wanting more. Great video bro keep cranking out the bangers 💯

Maaaaaan, there was NOBODY better at breaking down the defense and getting to the hoop. I collect the old scouting books, and the rap on him was always, every year, his attitude and antics. It's very interesting to look at his rookie year next to the other great NYC guard Mark Jackson. One was beloved by the city (at the time and it didn't last long) and an absolute gentleman. The other was kinda crazy and gave zero effs if anyone liked him, including his teammates and coaches. No surprise which one they kept, and which got traded for a washed up and broken down Mo Cheeks.

I think Rod Strickland was ahead of his time . If he would’ve entered the league when Allen Iverson, Stephon Marbury , and some of those other guys entered the league he would’ve gotten my props , but coming in 1988 , the league was a lot different as the guy who put this together said. It was more of a Shooting guard , Center, Small Forward type of league instead of the more point guard friendly league that it is today . Even with all of his problems, that would’ve been overlooked today . He definitely had the talent and I believe he is very unrated and definitely up there with great point guards to have played in the nba . I really enjoyed watching Rod Strickland and felt like he not only gave my bulls fits but every other nba team at that time . Point guards were thought of as setup man and not main guys and necessities as they are now .We can thank Allen Iverson for that . Even with all his problems, that was overlooked because he pretty much was the Sixers franchise . Maybe if Rod was drafted by someone else other than the Knicks that would’ve made a difference but I seriously doubt it . To me his shot was better than most guys that play today. It was better than Magic. Teams just saw him as not being worth the trouble but he definitely could play .

Always been well known, highly rated, and respected as having one of the nicest, most entertaining games. In his era outside shooting was not a prerequisite of a point guard. He's not one of the GOATS or the MVPs but he was memorable and had a lovely game.

Rod Strickland was COLD! I never realized that he'd never made ALL-STAR. I always assumed he chose to rest. He was unstoppable & so refined in fundamental basketball that you had to respect it. I used to hope A.I. studied him because he couldn't outrun the league forever, so learning to control tempo to your TEAM's advantage may have gotten him back to the FINALS.

He had all-star talent, but attitude and work ethic is part of what makes an All-Star as well. He was deficient in those areas. Maybe that's why his teams never won much.

Rod was one of the layup Gods at his position, the best if only Kyrie Irving could have had more of rod Stricklands overall point guard game like court vision ,passing, and pace kyrie Irving would have been arguably the most complete point guard.

True, but you also have to take into account that it’s a different eras between them. Strickland had to be a pure point guard in his era because that was the era of pure point guards. The era that Kyrie is playing in now has guys like Westbrook, Lillard, Curry, and pre-injury D. Rose to name a few, guys who are scoring point guards.

@@lil_james1584 true, the last decade the NBA as been more about scoring PGs and point forwards and versatile bigs that can stretch the floor less physical play .

My dad is an old school bullets fan. He STILL talks about to this day how the wiz never should have let him go. "that boy could shoot" Strickland was a bad man. Hell like brand nubian said "why'd the Knicks trade rod strick?! That man is nice!"

Not brand nubian, it was nature, on the song blood money part 2, ft Nas and Nore. "I went to games as a knicks fan they had Strickland, they traded him after that son i hated them"
