I’m the guy who played the role of Herr Otto Partz in this game, randomly running across this video in 2021. I was a programmer at DSI, but I didn’t work on this game other than as that character. We all loved playing this game at work. Amusingly, I’m actually 53 right now, even though I’m listed as being 52 in the game.

@@ArchieStiglitz Yeah, all but one of them were fellow employees at DSI. Bernie and Cherry were artists, Joe was a manager and Skid was another programmer. Helen was a model/actress who was hired specifically for the game. I don't know exactly why we hired her, other than I think my boss liked the idea of hiring a professional model to be in a video game. Clearly, he was a visionary.

@@KingCubby2K This is so cool to finally get the answers to who these people are. I remember as a kid playing this game back in the early 90s I thought the pictures looked so good graphically and I wondered how they did it and if they where real people or completely cg. I remember Carmageddon had a similar thing going. Thank you for sharing man.

The most astonishing thing about this game was that you were able to create your own custom tracks and stunts. Those programmers must have been geniuses to create such a game at that time.

Customization lessens the value of mods by the developer. It's not that big companies couldn't program that but it is lost revenue for them. Which is also why they disable split screen. Why allow four ppl to play in the living room when they can separate them in ty heir own household to buy 4 licenses to that game. This is where capitalism has failed the consumers.

I spent so much time on it, my parents teased me by saying they would need to install a keyboard on a car when it was time to teach me to drive. My dad also spent an inordinate amount of time designing some very trollish tracks. The funny thing is that everything had the same suspension. I could take the Indy car, get it up to max speed, and then launch it off a ramp that allowed me to go over like 2 whole sections of track and land without a problem. It became a joke against the AI to set up a ramp that went to a circular ramp to go down, the AI would force itself to got slowly down that circular ramp, while blast over the whole thing.
@FalkFlak
@FalkFlak 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the physics are great in the game. We built the tracks in a way that you would hit the top edge of a skyscraper in max speed which would send you flying to the moon. The car got up about a mile high while slowly drifting out of the map (we thought it was because of the wind, lol). IIRC such a flight took about 2min. in midair. Great fun.
@Charistoph
@Charistoph 3 жыл бұрын
@@FalkFlak, I did something similar by setting up an overpass to last about 4/5 of the length of the map, then a downramp in to a sharp turn right before a hill at the edge of the map. It is so easy to miss the turn and fly full speed in to the invisible fence. Flew so high I lost the hills of the map. I can't remember the flight time, it was at least 90 seconds of vertical travel.

Most forward thinking game, period. Map editor, recorded replays, tons of cars with different driving characteristics, different opponentns, both horizontal and vertical physics (yeah, we know the fly to the moon bugs), taking mud/snow corners with full throttle on same gear with manual. This game did jump over it's competition by decade by many aspects.

Yeah. I used to have my friends sleep over at my place, we'd alternate between Megadrive games and PC games. This one was one of our favourites and somehow, my one friend was the only one of us who managed it - and did it twice - but he somehow crashed the crash nose-first into the ground after a jump ---- and then the car rocketed up into the sky for some reason. No idea why, but I saved an in-game replay of it. It's long gone now, sadly.

I played this religiously in my early youth. One thing I remember the most is the max-speed bug with the Indycar; if you are in fifth gear, and hit maximum revs in a jump, your car will lock at maximum speed, no matter the terrain or steering. I was 9 years old in 1994. And my dad had just bought an expensive, used harddrive from a friend. Initially intended for our family business computer. Well, turned out that hard drive came filled to the brim with, ehrm, less-than-legal copies of games. Anywho, that drive was initially destined to get wiped in order to contain a load of business bookkeping. However, that never happened. As my father and i got so enamored with some of the games on the drive that he actually bought another one, brand new, for the original purpose. This was one of the games on that drive, and ever since then i've been a proponent of cyan colored cars. Another game on that drive was Creature Shock. That game caused a young me to not be able to sleep by myself for 2 days. Scary stuff back then.

Hydrocarbon82 My friend and I would make tracks with banked transitions alternating to make the Indy jump and get locked in.. it would do somethkng like 230 and get stuck full throttle.. we found another glitch where you could drive up a hill and get airborn and fly perpetually without crashing if tou kept the wheel turned.

This game was so many years ahead of its time. It was throught this that I learned as a child, that breaking and turning was way more important than accelarating, lol.

I spent so many hours in this game back in the days. I always loved making aaalmost impossible “tracks” and trying them out, and switching cameras was just too cool!

The one thing it sadly lacked was multiplayer - which Stunt Car Racer did have. First time I got that working was between an Amiga 500 and Atari 520 ST using RS-232 cable. My first networked play. 1991.

Never got to play this on Amiga, I'd imagine it would be super slow on A500. Stunt Car Racer in multiplayer sounds epic :D

It blew our minds, we spent the entire weekend playing championships :) The hard part was convincing my parents to let me take my expensive ST to a friend's house to try the link-up!

I can only imagine :) Only got to play SCR on C64 in single player, but it was pretty fun nonetheless. Good port considering hardware limitations. Doom was the first LAN experience for me, then Hi-Octane, Warcraft, NFS, Quake and so on.

Ah yes :) I think mine in order of play after Stunts were Novell Netwars (on school network), Doom, Worms, Heroes of Might and Magic, Big Red Racer, Hi Octane, Warcraft... man, those were legendary days. And don't get me started on the original C&C. Also remember trying VR for the first time playing Heretic at a computer fair at the university I ended up attending. (Amazing how many years it still took for the Oculus to hit the market.) Defining moments for a programmer-to-be.

Never got to play Netwars myself. But yeah, all those rest, BRR we played a little bit in LAN also, or with split screen, can't remember for sure. HOMM and especially Worms were nice with the hotseat options so didn't have to carry around expensive hardware to get a game going :)

Used to make one small circled track, and start building like random stuntjumps over buildings which were not allowed in a closed track, but possible when not in the track itself. I had a whole world of crazy stunts and jumps at the fingertips. Such a good time it was to be alive.

My friends & I played this game not for the racing aspect, but just to record the epic glitchy crashes we'd do on purpose on our homemade tracks. Then we'd trade the video files & tracks with each other via floppies. It was great cuz this game ran on everything from a lowly 286 CGA shitbox to a mighty 486 with SVGA, meeting everyone's computing needs.
