They said the same about the privatisation of the utility companies back in the 80's. A "share owning society" "cheaper bills" "more control of service provision" Instead, poor folk cashed their shares within a few years to be vacuumed up by big foreign companies. We now have no control and huge bills. BBC should be pay to view service provision, rubbish television, poor ratings equals no profits.

Before anyone could become a shareholder in the BBC, the BBC would have to be privatised, and that's not going to happen. Even if it did, the shares that would be offered to the public would be bought in varying amounts depending upon, amongst other things, ability to pay. What would not happen would be that each shareholder would have an equal say in the running of the BBC.

The stipulation that you need to pay BBC to watch other channels is one of the most asinine things in UK law. How on earth did they ever get the government to agree to that? And how do people defend it? It's something that simply would not be tolerated from any other company in any other area of business. If Tesco wanted to charge you a fee for shopping online with Morrisons... if Xbox demanded a fee to play online on your PlayStation... if Netflix wanted payment when you watched something on Prime... they'd be told where to go by the public, and probably investigated by the government; and yet it's fine for the BBC to do it. Utterly bizarre. As the viewing landscape continues to shift and more people stop paying the licence fee, you can bet that - unless things change - BBC will push to get viewing on demand covered by the licence as well. The current ideas about introducing a separate tax or adding it to Council Tax etc. also need to be shut down with extreme prejudice. _Nobody_ should be forced to pay for a service they don't use and don't want, no matter what. There is nothing special about them, and they are not needed.

Radio 2 was on the office today. They played an advert encouraging parents to buy a TV licence for their son/daughter who had just gone off to Uni so they wouldn't feel so lonely. Their child having a TV licence meant they could still watch the same programmes together and message each other afterwards about their favourite bit of the programme 😂. As if any teenager actually watched TV at home with mummy and daddy before going off to Uni!

Thanks to your advice, I'll be polite but tell them NOTHING except "I have no TV". I had licences there for 30-odd years, but with no TVs on site, I owe them ZERO.

The only way forward for the BBC is a subscription service. They will then have to tailor the output to what people want to watch, its the only way, as the current model means most British people are not represented in programming, that is not acceptable.

Scratching my head here. I thought the bbc was given the charter to make stuff thats not mass market and therefore lower numbers of viewers. E.g. regional items. Small demographic. However I think this should come from a tax but it should be limited to a much smaller amount like 250-500 million for regional services like news etc. And then let the main bbc go commercial.

Totally agree. The lack of accountability has always been the BBC's problem. They sacked their golden goose Clarkson, and left Top Gear to ruin. Another one of our best cultural exports, Doctor Who, ruined by terrible writing and had an enormous ratings fall off. Now every other show is being "wokey-fied" and ruined. They don't sack bad writers, bad directors, bad producers etc. because they will always get the public's money regardless of what bad decisions they make. I say just let the BBC advertise and watch ITV & Channel 4 panic as another big player enters the market! Keep them stuck to their charter and give them a tax benefit for doing it, that way if other broadcasters start whinging about their tax benefit, they can be offered the same charter, they can obey the same rules, and then receive the benefits too.

You just know that if they went down the shareholder route, somebody somewhere would be making a shedload of money out of it. Much simpler to advertise, after all it isn't as though every other tv company does the same. The BBC would probably do well through novelty alone, and then it would be market forces determining whether it sinks or swims. I stopped paying earlier this year when I realised my TV was more of an ornament than a useable gadget - I've put it upstairs out of the way. Had a couple of reminders and now a threatening one lol. Had a knock on the door today...went over, prepared for the worst, ready to say 'Who are you?' then 'No Thankyou' then realised it was someone delivering a parcel 🤣😂 (BTW Jon - thanks for your videos - I feel empowered to shut the door on them with your valuable help)

Busking apparently does not need anything except a street trading permit, never mind the performing rights society or any music copyrightto reimburse the writers of who's songs a busker performs. A permanent business has to have music permits even for a staff radio in a staff only area, go figure
