Now's the time for us to go light with these temps. I have a question for you Bryce. In two weeks CSC and I are going out and I need someplace new. You know anywhere in Ohio besides the normal Mohican, Zaleski, Archers, Wildcat, Vesuvius... any different than the normal WNF trails? Have a great adventure going that light. Guessing you're going to the place I saw you this past winter.

I would bring the phone - it packs insane utility in a trip for what it weighs. And I would add the water filter, because that way you can carry less water from the start (since you said you would be carrying all your water with you). This also has the benefit of saving you in case you need more water than you took. Water is the thing that you can't really play with imo. A rescue might take a long while to come, or knock on wood - you have an issue with the sos device. Water filter is the failsafe. I never had the Sawyer sqweeze (full size) fail on me yet. As long as I backflush often, its good for a half a million to a million uses.

Ok, Brice, if the Lite AF was lighter with everything on it than the the other pack stripped down, what was the point of continuing to strip down the other pack? That makes no sense to me.
@BryceNewbold4 жыл бұрын
Because they both had the frames in them that dont weigh the same.. if the hyperlites suspention was alot lighter than the LiteAF than it could have been the lighter pack.

You really went Physio Light. So get a BIG STEAK for dinner since the consumables weight does not count in the Ultralight total , but does on your back. A couple of things ( 4 ) I did to drop my pack weight into the 7 to 8 pound ultralight range so I could keep some comfort items. 1..I went with the Zpacks Nero at 10.5 ounces. It has the front pocket and water bottle pockets. 2.. The water filter , Katadyn BeFree with the 1 liter bag , 2.3 ounces. Larger bags are available. 3...Hummingbird hammock , bug net and tarp. Gossamer Gear thin pad. 4...Cook kit is between 3 different titanium ones , all are under 6 ounces. Here in Florida the idea is staying cool ( when camping ) for most of the year.

polycryo sheet for shelter and groundsheet, just wrap it around yourself, it even comes with a skylight for star gazing! skip the sleeping pad for midsummer trips. heavy duty puffy and leg insulation and skip the quilt. Get a lighter pack like a palante etc. bring a mosquito headnet. skip the trekking pole. skip the tent stakes. skip the hand sanitizer. keep the trowel! I'm tired of seeing poop and toilet paper on the ground (dig proper cat-holes people, it isn't hard). Try a bidet instead of toilet paper, super nice option and potentially lighter as well. Sawyer mini for the memes. Nylofume for pack liner. Skip the headlamp get a rovyvon aroura flashlight instead, or for short trips just a basic single AAA battery type flashlight and skip the power bank. litesmith toothbrush, skip the toothpaste. Skip most repair and first aid stuff, just bring some luekotape, a sewing needle and some floss. Skip the bic mini. Skip the cook kit, bring a lighweight jar for cold soaking. A steak is about as far away from ultralight as it gets. go with peanutbutter, nuts, dried coconut and olive oil, fritos are actually pretty decent fyi. Bringing balanced electrolytes will actually reduce the amount of water you need thus saving weight, saltstick tabs are probably the best option. Kfc spork is fantastic. Skip the spot beacon. for short trips skip the phone and bring paper maps instead, you'd be surprised how many paper maps it takes to equal the weight of a phone + case + cable + power bank + wall charger. Skip the knife, get a razor blade if you really want something but tbh skip that too. Thin grocery store water bottles. I've put together a sub 3 pound list that actually works (kinda).

Isn't bug net a convenience item? And what about tent, poncho made from DCF or space blanket should be enough. Sleeping pad, you could lean on a tree so you need just 30*40cm piece of sleeping pad. Water filter, why not purifying tablets? Lots of weight to cut when doing one night trip or even two nighter.

They say, "Stupid is as stupid does". J/K It is great to see how ultralighters swing it to help us heavies go at least down to mid-light weight. I like that you didn't just put together a fantasy video but have done a video where you use all this. I like the pack mod, goes to show that chopping things off is not always the best plan; look at all the features you took off the second pack and it still wasn't as light as the feature rich LiteAF pack.

P.S. Who was the people that set 10 lbs or less as Ultralight? Was there a committee that voted on that information? I swear, someday, somebody's gonna get killed out there with those minimalistic first-aid kits. The number of times I've had to bandage deep cuts in the mountains (by deep, I mean 4-6 stiches, blood everywhere deep) is amazing. And by bandage, I mean strong compression bandage over a sterile gauze pad, not some bandana-wrapped twice-around-a-scratch held together with two band-aids. My point is, all of these ultralight videos should also include for what terrain and for what conditions that gear is appropriate. Caught on in a saddle above 2500 meters in a severe storm with 60-80 kmph winds? No, an ultralight DCF tarp between trekking poles isn't 'shelter' in those conditions, it's either a sail or a kite (or usually in that order, before and after take-off). I'm all for going as light as possible with my knee issues, but reading terrain and deciding gear based on that is a must.
