As my beloved 524td has been under renovation for quite several years, I regularly return to this movie to listen to the soothing sound of the M21 diesel. I dont know how to thank you man 😂

I have '89 E30 324d. It's more of a grandpa car (because it lacks considerable acceleration), though brakes and handling are great just as in every BMW. It's a great car and I'm addicted to that 6cyl sound. Only BMW can make even a diesel sound so clean, smooth, yet agressive at higher revs. The mod I plan to do is swapping it with a mechanically injected, turbocharged M21 engine and fit an intercooler to it. It will have enough torque and power when asked, yet will still have quite good fuel consumption.

+TransAmDrifter PL My 524td e28 sound was fantastic. Straight piped. Turbocharger was dead and engine was in bad shape, it was so fucking slow (even slower than 524d on that video), but sound was still very nice.

Nice vid. Today we have started up a 524 td after it has been parked for 6 years (!) and it has started flawlessly at 2nd attempt. Owner wants to send it to the scrapyard but it sounded so nicely that I'm thinking about keeping it and use it as a everyday car.

Excellent video, nice to see and hear BMW diesels in clarity, rather than in pixellated phone camera videos with crappy euro-pop masking the noise! Its a shame that here in Great Britain we did not get the 524 td. One wonders how difficult (or indeed financially viable) it would be to install the diesel engine and gearbox in, say an E28 with a good body but broken drivetrain

I think there is always a reason for older engines not getting manufactured anymore. Its called Emission Standards. But it also meant less reliable engines.

I have two 524 motors…one out of a wrecked bmr And one out of a Lincoln with Ford auto …..I have not touched them in over 15 years….now after seeing this rev show….I want to stuff one in a Suzuki samurai…what are some easy mods to wake up that motor….? Both TDs are turbo and stock….

Beautiful cars!! What makes the whine, when pulling through the 1st gear, on the two 524td's? The N/A one doesn't make that sound.... My 525tds also makes it, so did the 325i e30 I had... love that sound!!

Langjährige Lancisten können auf 100.000 verschiedene Arten singen. Aber der 6-Zylinder-Reihenmotor des 524 td war 1984 sicherlich viel leistungsstärker als der Lancia 4-Zylinder. Die Höchstgeschwindigkeit war das Vorrecht von Thema, aber die Beschleunigung und die Regelmäßigkeit des Betriebs des 524 waren etwas anderes. Zusammen mit der inneren Stille, die meiner bescheidenen Meinung nach diesen 5er zu einem Auto von großer Abstammung machte

Thomas, was kostets, einen M21 Automat auf Schalter umzubauen? Haette einen Savannabeigen mit 156k lt Tacho, geschweißt, angeboten bekommen, in Holland.

Einfach so lassen. Die Automatik passt zum Motorcharakteristik eh besser als das Schaltgetriebe. Der Umbau ist relativ einfach machbar, aber man braucht einen Haufen Teile.

@@Scaniatom bin Rollstuhlfahrer + hasse die Automatik, weil mir schon zu viel vorgeschrieben wird, wie ich was machen soll. Fuer meinen E24 ///M635 CSi machte ich extra die Schalterpruefung nach. Der E32 735 ist ebenfalls ein Handschalter. Den Subaru Libero FA8 mit 54 PS fuhr ich einige Zeit im Alltag. Machte mehr Spass als der 324 td A touring. Mit Automat richtig fad😒.

Had an '86 524td in US. Got 42 mpg on 400 mile trip, at 75-80 with A/C on 4 people, and fully loaded trunk, using BG 44k for diesels as recommended by Mercedes dealer. Otherwise, car must have been built during Octoberfest. Windows, entire front suspension replaced, front brakes and seized master cylinder at 18k miles, and bad glowplugs, all witin 28k. Nightmare.

Ja klar! Die beiden in diesem Video gezeigten Turbodiesel stehen wohlbehütet in der Tiefgarage und werden bei schönem Wetter ab und zu bewegt. Den Sauger fährt ein Bekannter aus dem Nachbarort als Sommerauto. Alle anderen dürfte es auch noch geben.
