I think it might’ve been 2013 so the price of gold was about $1400 an ounce. My son was a teen at that time and I used to take him to a money show up in Westchester County. I let him loose and he came back and he said that he found gold for “eight”. It turns out it was eight (pause) hundred dollars for a fractional piece of graded gold!

What a great video! I think the dealers are trying to control the “narrative” as to what gets reported to the “taxman”.
@PolarCurrency6 ай бұрын
No disagreement - just don't want to be accusatory! BUT - they shouldn't be able to save the tax impact AND charge the prices. Not to mention the loss of sales that leads to less income that may overcome the taxes that they pay! Especially for dealers at one of the three largest shows in the US.

@@PolarCurrency I live in New York City, and whenever place says cash or credit, I respond credit. When they say they’re going to charge me an extra whatever my response is Ooooooooooo! I do NOT work for the federal government, but if I did work for the federal government and I went to a place where nobody took a credit card, I think that would be more suspicious!

@PolarCurrency6 ай бұрын
I get it - but avoiding the tax man and charging the prices? The aspect of a electronic surcharge - it's a lot less than an eBay mark up. And yeah carrying that much cash - not that I can afford it - but no regards to security. They were all inside the show. Nothing outside. It's my cross to bear argument! Where im at there are only two coin shows a year, and the currency offerings have always been like what they had for 20 years in a kitchen junk drawer and decided to bring it out. First time I went, a long time ago now, I bought two very cheap world banknotes notes that I didn't need or really even want, but just wanted to get *something* after the effort of looking around. I've never bought anything else on subsequent shows. In fact, I don't go more than about every 3 years now because of the lack of paper money offered. Maybe I miss something by not going, but for those i do go to,I still leave disappointed and without a purchase every time. Anyway, I'm glad to hear it's better elsewhere, and it was great fun to listen to you two hashing out your experiences.
@PolarCurrency6 ай бұрын
Been there and experienced that meany times and can sympathize. But the shows have been changing - depending on the show. The "big" shows definitely have currency and I'm lucky to have a regional show (70-100 dealers) two times a year and there is more currency every year. If you're not geographically close it would be tough. Thanks for the info and appreciate where you're coming from and been.

Dang it. I missed you both by a day. I was there on Friday afternoon. It was a cool show with lots and lots of very expensive currency. It was cool to meet some of the currency dealers in person that I have interacted with over email and the phone.

I only went to one currency / paper money show once. It was in zelienople, PA. it was a medium size room with wall to wall people. everything there was just overpriced due to most of it being graded. I did find a table of Nationals. where I got my 1929 saltsburg pa note for $175.00 dollars. I guess you could say it. was and I quote a ** cheap price ** for a banknote. Sidebar : I did picked up another National from the Allentown national bank at an antique store up in Punxsutawney. as a bonus I got a 10% discount. and I'm not even old enough yet for a discount.
@PolarCurrency6 ай бұрын
That's what's ironic...dealers bring out their high end inventory to shows where only 50% of those attending can afford to purchase. It's never cheap for a National you just hope for a fair price - your home town?
@tylerdouble87216 ай бұрын
buying nationals sure isn't cheap. the gentleman I had bought my national off of. had every national from Pennsylvania expect for maybe 7. cause those banks didn't issue any banknotes. there was one national that he had called * Swineford *. I never knew there was a town in pa called Swineford.

Wait,you mean there's things you can't find on eBay? No way😄The reason why they don't take credit cards is 3 little letters...IRS ..no paper trail,no pun intended.Who doesn't love hamburgers?Glad you guys had a good time
@PolarCurrency6 ай бұрын
I know! Something other than eBay! So, your answer makes me even more angry - screw them avoiding taxes - it's not like I love taxes but if you want to SELL something and SAVE 20-30% from not paying taxes and ALSO charge those prices - well I can tell you where to go. We did have a great time...was the hamburger better than meeting Stu?
@dandbhuff79926 ай бұрын
Ahhhhhh. Those were the days. A currency show and 2 meals (with a change of shirts between)😂😂😂. Except for the prices, it seems like dealer behavior and availability hasn't changed a whole lot in 25 years. You didn't talk much about "negotiation" on prices. Or have the dealers just gotten more inflexible on that too? Glad you got to spend a great day together. D
@PolarCurrency6 ай бұрын
Dennis! Did not see any of your contacts. Availability was there, the currency dealers were for the most part really good. Not picking on coins here - but the coin booths that had currency, and there were a few that had decent stuff. Let's say they didn't jump to help us out...great to spend the time with Stu.

Another thing on the credit cards and venmo, customer charge backs can and do happen.
@PolarCurrency6 ай бұрын
Yeah there is that but every legitimate business faces that with Credit Cards - it bothers me that they aren't paying taxes, which whatever - but you shouldn't get to hide from the tax man and charge those prices. Maybe I'm over thinking it? Appreciate the comment!
@junksilverman6 ай бұрын
19...THOUSAND! hahaha ridiculous. Maybe the dealers don't offer credit card, venmo or zelle because of the "paper trail" that would potentially force them to worry about taxes at the end of the year? Or maybe they are simply lazy? The best dealers at any show have the prices ON TOP of the notes so you can readily see them without having to ask. If they notice you showing interest they will mention they can come down a bit on price - that's good salesmanship! Gotta love the crotchety dealers that always seem annoyed when you ask them to see a note under glass haha
@PolarCurrency6 ай бұрын
Your description of the best dealers is dead on. I get no one likes to pay taxes but how many sales are lost versus taxes saved and dealers shouldn't get to not pay taxes and charge the prices. Thanks for the comment and appreciate the view!
