Well, from an honorary Aussie with a little Kiwi cred, it's a pleasure meeting a random Sheila on an Outlaw Country song. This is not self-promotion, but I have been reacting to Cold Chisel, Jimmy Barnes, John Farnham, The Seekers, Delta Goodrem, Vanessa Amorosi, Max Merritt, and many others. The only reason I bring this up is that I grew up on country music just like this. I live in North Carolina, in the southern states, even though it's "North." lol I think a lot about the music industry, particularly when it comes to artists like John Farnham and Jimmy Barnes when they came over here. Even if they had gone to Muscle Shoals, things might have been different. But it has changed everywhere within the country music industry these days, in my opinion. It's apparent when they edit all their artists; they don't even have the explicit lyrics label available. Apparently, you can't be a country star and put one of those on your album. I may stand corrected if someone knows of a country music album with that label, but I have never seen one. The country music I grew up with didn't have to include a lot of cursing. They did every now and then, and they also did bad things sometimes. Country music was not always rosy or pretty; it was real. Jimmy Barnes in the pub rock scene in Australia back in the day reminds me very much of the outlaw country, classic country, or "forbidden" country, whatever label the industry puts on it these days. I think I may be one of the biggest Americans promoting Australian music and maybe the biggest advocate for older country now because most channels just play the newer stuff. I don't want to come into videos, chat rooms, or anywhere and promote my channel, but we've covered Aretha Franklin, Tool, and many other artists from all around the world. Simpson, a big fan of Sturgill, started our channel. But despite his popularity, Sturgill hasn't even been invited to some country music awards. In the same years he wasn't invited, he won Country Music Artist of the Year at the Grammys. So, this says a lot in itself. They are too worried about the "rich men north of Richmond," but I'm concerned about the poor folk south of Norfolk. Sturgill Simpson is Living Proof a Country Boy's Outlaw music will SURVIVE

Just my opinion but seems as cliche as a line from a florida georiga line song.. I love this guys music but I think that was a bone he threw to Nashville to get a few dollars. Everybody has to eat
@wheelmanstan10 жыл бұрын
thatguy he was on the joe rogan podcast and yeah he hates this song being one of those songs folks always wanna hear, it took him no time to write it and it's silly (although that doesn't decide whether a song is good or not), he says his plan is to write 5 albums total and quit because no matter what he does Nashville has guys like him locked out, so 3 more albums and he's done, this song in my opinion is like that wade bowen song "trucks" where he makes fun of all that crap on the radio, I don't think he was trying to go mainstream with it at all, I've seen some of that with pat green and eli young, going mainstream means becoming a carbon copy poster boy
@JoJaDaRu10 жыл бұрын
wheelmanstan There's a self consciousness to this song that is infectious. It is clearly not of the same ilk as the songs you would hear on new country radio mainly because of that self awareness. But sure, it's not his best song, still it's fun and very quotable. This whole album is a lot more fun than MMSICM but it's also not as good. Partly because he isn't going as much for that party country thing (there's certainly less jokes), and partly because he's confident enough to reach a little deeper inside. Either way they're both good albums. I know this song bothered him for some time because he had problems with it, both internally and with how others perceived it.. as you say. But an artist isn't the final arbiter of their work... neither am I but still... that opening line lets you know you're about to have fun right away and to me... that's a good thing.
@JoJaDaRu10 жыл бұрын
thatguy On the new album he has a song that starts: "Woke up today and decided to kill my ego, cause it never done me no good no how." - that's a much more a cliche line where I come from but I suppose what is and is not cliche is a matter of the culture you're used to. That opening line, to me, just lets me know I'm about to have some unpretentious fun. The kind of fun I'd have listening to Hank Williams Sr. or Lefty Frizel.

Great stuff with the Steeldrivers. I love the stuff I hear from Simpson and he might be the best of the three, but why limit yourself to just one artist or try to crown one the "king"? The Bronco line's incredibly well crafted, as is the whole song-"call me King Turd up here on Shit Mountain" is a great hook, "watchin' Andy & ol' Boss Hog" snatches your brain back home & then there's "sometimes I feel like cuttin' a vein, just watchin' it bleed"!!! Sturgill Simpson's fucking Legendary!

I never knew who steve goodman was. Never really paid that much attention. Mostly because every time i listened to this song, i was about 2 sheets in headed for the 3rd. What a fun song that was. Steve was 36 when he died of leukemia. He also wrote the city of new orleans. Thanks, steve, wherever you are. You have brought a lot of smiles to a lot of faces in this life.
