I used to work there, i used to work at the scale, then i got a higher position grading the metals that came from others company. I remembered rejecting a load because it was like 80% dirt and 20% metal.

Sturgis shut down and filed chapter 11. The shredder was sold at auction for 41 million. The property sits empty now. They shut down because of noise and dust complaints from neighbors...

I have seen a railroad gondola car full of that "Frag" sitting at a siding at a railroad station ( Fullerton, CA )... it reeked of motor oil... That railroad car must have weighed an un-Godly amount of tonnage. 5:35

At the time it became operational it was the largest - shredders will continue to grow as we continue to recycle & consume more metal every year

...isn't Sturgis Iron and Metal in Sturgis, Michigan?
@DragonSMP
@DragonSMP 7 жыл бұрын
It was when I worked there, back in the 80s, but the yard in sturgis got reduced to just a collection area, that sends the scrap to other processing areas, and as far as I know it changed hands to OmniSource Corporation. I'm guessing the original Sturgis Iron And Metal business moved to Levin And Son's in Elkhart, In. My first job in the yard, back in 1984, was maintenance on the hammer mill that was there at that time. It had 32 x 250lb hammers. I shoveled a lot of dirt, and greased a lot of rollers.

No, not that type of reference. The main drive motor could pull a heavy enough of an electrical surge to overload the power company's generators.

suraj algoo it has to be broken down to small pieces, seaparated from other non ferrous metals and bits of plastic before it can be melted down. Melting one huge solid lump of steel would take far longer than if you were to get a heap of shredded steel the same weight and just melt it
