Many thanks from Australia for the memories. While some are unfamiliar, others such as Monkey and Catweazle bring back many happy childhood memories . Always amazed how shows like Catweazle had only two series of 13 episodes. They seemed to go on forever when I was kid. I have a vague memory of another English show , The terracotta horse that showed during school holidays down under

The 'Telling bone' has to be one of the best (insert posh word here) pieces of punnery I can remember. Are there still writers who can envisage 'four candles' as a comedy gateway or write a pop song including Bell end and Ring piece' I don't know. I feel we've been conditioned to not accept anything which might upset anyone. Salute the golden age of comedy, we shall not see its like again.

It's the unique tone of The Masterspy that stuck in the memory, the mixture of genres you mention, plus the suave William Franklin and, most of all, the glamorous Jenny Lee Wright, always introduced by name each week. By the way, something about the credits of The Changes reminded me of a childrens' drama series on ITV which was shown on Sunday afternoons just before or after The Muppet Show and was about a teenage boy working on a Grimsby or Hull trawler. What was it called?

It's actually pretty weird that this was on here today as I've just finished watching Kamen Rider Ghost and one of the Legendary Heroes is Sanzo, who is a Japanese interpretation of Xuanzang, who's the priest in the original Journey to the West myth Monkey is based on! Fantasy Island was great too, used to love it. Not sure I'd want to sit and watch it now though, not like I would Monkey, or Knight Rider etc., little too slow for me. Catweasel was mental! Can't remember most of it now, but I seem to recall it being a bit... Unhinged. Great roundup as always Stu, cheers!

David Nixon put me magicians to this very day. If I remember correctly it alternated with Opportunity Knocks, which I preferred 🤔. Never saw Monkey but was a fan of The Water Margin, Catweazle, Harry Worth and When the Boat Comes In.

Thanks Stu! If you have Sky, some of these shows are currently being repeated on Rewind TV, That's Christmas, and That's TV 2. Personally, I'm really enjoying revisiting Shine on Harvey Moon, which is a truly wonderful drama series.

A lot of those dramas for slightly older kids were genuinely disturbing, not least because even if you were too young you probably watched it anyway. I think some of us have never completely recovered.

Yes, 'Monkey' was weird for sure but I somehow found it fascinating as a young kid! That and 'water margin', we never really got any Japanese productions after that did we (aside Pokemon)? 🙂

A series that really scared me was 'Time watch ' ( I think, with Bernard Braden?) Very hazy but epic. Various environmental disasters played out in half hour. I preferred the 'Water margin' to 'Monkey.

The Changes was also ground breaking for introducing aspects of Asian culture to school kids in the 70s. Master Spy was a favourite, while eating Secret Agent sweets, and like Whodunnit, was great to play along with at home.

A lot of these slipped through the cracks for me, I remember odd bits but no real detail. If it was a certain Mr Noakes riding the Cresta Run, climbing a monument or jumping out of a plane 5 miles up I'd remember it like it was yesterday .

Oh yes. The Changes. It not only introduced me to the Sikh culture but also made me scared as hell of large power lines. Seriously scared, even to the point of still hearing a phantom noise when I go under one! ❤

I actually remember Master Spy but could never remember the name of the show. With the theme music to Monkey, you've probably already found out but what we got was actually the original, problem for KZbinrs like yourself is it is a commercial release and major chart hit for the band Godiego (I had to google their name but I did see an interview with them on the NHK World music Show J-Melo about 6-10 years back).

Monkey Magic!! A Japanese version of a Chinese story that became hugely popular in the UK! And there are thousands of other Journey to the West adaptations.. but this one just hit the spot. Was it not shown alongside the similarly Japanese-set Water Margin?

I think Water Margin was shown a day later but definitely of the same period. I think the main actor of The Water Margin played Tiger Tanaka in You Only Live Twice.

I don't think you could call 'Monkey' forgotten, in fact it's impossible to mention it in mixed company of a certain age without at least one person going "Aaah, Munkeeh!" in an outrageously stereotyped pseudo Chinese accent. It's currently being shown on Talking Pictures TV over the weekend. I was a bit too old for Monkey, I was more of a 'Water Margin' kinda kid; X-Men set in Medieval China, what's not to love for a 13 year old? I also used to quite enjoy the dinner time programmes such as 'Galloping Gourmet', 'Paint along with Nancy' and 'Origami' because I came home from school for dinner.

Monkey Friday night BBC2 6pm , loved it. William Franklin. I sort of remember Master Spy as he used to do a commercial for tonic water at the time........ SHHHHH You Know Who. I used to get confused if out shopping with my parents and older brother. As soon as one of them got to a shop window they would stand and lift up one arm and one leg I was left scratching my head with absolutely no reference. Cat Weasel also falls into that category. Every time Wurzle Gummedge was on and chap who made the scarecrows appeared (for the life of me I have forgotten the characters name) I would hear "Oh Catweazle 🤷‍♂️ The last thing to mention is When the boat comes in. Slightly to young to watch it at the time I later got the DVD'S. Wish I never bothered. I don't know but the ITV comedy Brass seemed to have taken inspiration from that show

I liked the "Master spy" didn't the "contestants" ask to see a specific point again? 😀 I remember Harry worth and is opening shop window scene Didn't David NIxon do another series called "Nixon's magic box" Loved Catweazle, in the end he found "Where the 13th lies" and his pet frog "Touchwood" (I think)
