TBH, it's barely rock. Its heavily influenced by electronic music. Yeah sure, there's a guitar sound (IDK if it's a sample) but it's not doing anything amazing like you'd expect in a rock song. I'm not knocking this song or the artist, I blame the people who run the Grammy's if anything.

Lol should've expected to see a bunch of narrow minded people in these comments butthurt because this doesn't sound rock enough to them. Wake the fuck up it's the Grammys, what did you expect? Barely anyone wins for what they should actually win for. And even Annie (aka St. Vincent, for people not in the know) has said before how rock music and even metal has influenced her from an early age and is why she picked up a guitar. So without that we wouldn't have this song. This is how music evolves people.
@StratoReinXeed
@StratoReinXeed 5 жыл бұрын
So you consider this hybrid piece of crap the "evolution" of rock? Or music, generally speaking? Not even innovative, just more of what every single "avant garde" and "alternative" artists have been doing for a bunch of time now. Tipical Billboard material, background monotone sound people nowadays plays on Spotify while attending other stuff. Music appreciation is nearly lost at the present, it's the opposite of evolution. And following the same logic, Despacito should also be considered evolution. Just fuck that

Pavel Loginov no, but it’s one of many ways to use chocolate in a cake if one were competing for “best cake with chocolate.” If a chocolate chip cake tastes better than some shitty cake with chocolate frosting, then that’s worth noting.

No, didn't forget, it's just that I've never heard it on many of the streaming channels which are classified as Rock, if anything, it's pop and rap mixed, but not rock. It's more like Lady Gaga, who is much better, but I don't see LG nominated for any rock.

Rock is a big category. A top category. Different types of rock. Alternative and AAA are rock formats. And St Vincent gets played, some, on those formats. All the people who are complaining about this not being rock are people that really only understand rock in the context of the rock station that really rocks that they listen to. Active/Mainstream rock charts on Billboard. Listeners to that format are extremely picky about what is and what is not rock. I used to listen to the radio and I used to listen to that format, and when I was young, I, too, would complain when the radio station of that format would play what was not rock. The difference is, what the rock station that really rocks plays is really just a narrow sliver of rock. MD/PDs and their bosses are extremely fixed on what constitutes rock, and they're fixed in large part because they are probably right when they say they know their audience, and their audience really likely only what they've heard before. It makes the process of hit making pretty easy for ative rock bands, but it makes it difficult for active rock bands to get radio play outside of active rock. There are a lot of fans of active rock, and these days there are a lot of popular active rock festivals for people to go to. St Vincent has always been rock. Most would put her squarely in the indie rock camp. This latest album is a lot more electronic, but listen to the guitars. They're there. Indie Rock, AAA, Alternative are all rock, but they're just not active rock that you think is the only type of rock there is. Here's a name. Phish. They're playing back to back shows at Fenway Park. They're a Jam Band. And Jam Bands are rock. Just to illustrate that rock is a much bigger category than active rock radio listeners think it is.
@nopenope1454
@nopenope1454 5 жыл бұрын
@@parocks I can't disagree with your statement about st Vincent always being rock because I've never heard of them before. I know phish is a jam band and is considered rock, though I'm not sure what that had to do with anything lol. And I'm not "complaining" as I said: it's not a bad song. Ever heard of Garbage? They are one of my favorite rock bands, very unconventional rock, and this song reminds more of that kind of styled music than any other rock. So I gave it a second listen and still can't consider it rock. The song that is; not st Vincent. Im not an active radio rock listener so don't think that please lol. I probably like rock that gets radioplay these days even less than I do the pop that gets radioplay. I like both good rock, good pop, good music of any genre, and even more so the music that is hard to classify into a specific genre. This song is none of those things. It's mediocre "indie" art pop. Not hard to classify at all, and the word "rock" isn't there. I defy you to show anyone this song and ask them to classify it's genre and have them respond to you that it's "rock" without you trying to influence their response. The only way that I could imagine that happening is if you ask some poor uneducated bastard that only listens to rap type music and considers any music that isn't rap related as rock.
@anneother6224
@anneother6224 5 жыл бұрын
@@nopenope1454 A superficial understanding. St Vincent is hard to genre because she is really very original. To say Indie art pop is to say nothing. Clearly this is not all-sounds-the-same genre-blending pop nor is it all sounds the same rock for rock's sake. It belongs in the longer tradition of pop and rock music. She mentions Steely Dan, Jethro Tull, Metalica as influences. You cannot actually hear any of that directly. She takes all of it and creates her own music. It isn't inaccessible but it takes some time to get familiar enough to really appreciate. You mention Garbage. As in they are better. I don't know. I put a comment on the Paranoid video in which I note the homage to The Doors Hello I Love You. So Garbage operated in that bigger tradition too. For me St Vincent is right up with the greats. And Masseduction is a rock song. Of sorts.
@parocks
@parocks 5 жыл бұрын
@@anneother6224 I agree with most of that. St Vincent is up there with the greats. I wouldn't put her in a top category that doesn't include the word rock though. This particular album is the closest to pop. But the rest of the albums are rock. Rock is a very broad category. Basically, it seems that it's rock if it contains real instruments, especially electric guitar, and it doesn't clearly fit in those other categories. St Vincent is indie rock, and indie rock is a very broad category. It doesn't describe much, but that's where she is, or certainly was. I should try to find that somewhat old collection of Annie shredding. She's sort of like Muse, in that songs that people might know the most are not really representative of the entire output and of the show. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4nXiIyrotGDlbs

@@parocks I hadn't read your original reply. But I have now and I'm glad I did. An informed and well reasoned report from rock fan world. I got bored with this rock that really rocks (is that active rock?) almost as soon as it got started. So, Black Sabbath and early Led Zep then. But I don't hate it and when a great song is a rock song then I am going to love it. I'm not sure I buy your definition of what rock is though. In fact I have what may be an original idea regarding genre which fits closely to your "the audience only really like what they've heard before". So it goes like this. If it sounds like rock, it is rock. And that explains the debate. Someone like me who sees rock in a large context accepts much more stuff as rock while your rock radio listener is a pretty fine tuned animal. "As a lark" I rated the grammy nom songs for rockness. I got Black Smoke Rising and Rats as 100%, Mantra at 80%, Jumpsuit 75%, Masseduction at 60%. I'd be interested in your perspective. On St Vincent. I only see some of her stuff as rock. What do you call the songs as manifested on Masseducation if you have listened to it? And on Masseduction itself, maybe only 5 songs have a significant rock element in the treatment. I was just about to talk about ballads. But then I thought that was all wrong. What is left after you abstract the rock can't all be labelled as pop or ballads. Champagne Year for example. You might as well call it a secular hymn. Maybe Chamber Pop is a useful label for some of the first two albums but that's gone with the band change. Maybe there is more of a Rock/Synthpop ballad split after that.
