This match did not make anyone want to buy the PPV - Rude did not see like a threat to Warrior. Ultimate Warrior pretty much defeated him on free tv here on SNME, so why pay to see it again? Terrible booking after Mania 6.
@Dizzy1980
@Dizzy1980 4 жыл бұрын
Hell, Rude didn't seem at all like a threat to Warrior after their well-received, well played feud ended in 1989. They appeared in high profile spots at THREE of the four WWF Pay Per Views in 1989. It made it worse in 1990 when Rude constantly referred back to their old matches, basically reminding us all about what already happened between the two.
@Drummer8282
@Drummer8282 4 жыл бұрын
Chris Terry exactly. I’ve long maintained that the Warrior’s first major feud should have been against the Earthquake. Advertise that Summerslam ‘90 would see Hogan’s return to announce if he will retire. Hogan announces that he won’t retire and is demanding a match with Earthquake - title or not. Warrior then has Earthquake beaten when Dino Bravo interferes and leads to a 2-on-1 beat down of the Warrior, but here comes Hogan to the rescue. Hogan and Warrior team at Survivor Series’90 against Earthquake, Bravo and Slaughter - setting up Warrior vs Slaughter at Royal Rumble, while Hogan enters the Rumble with the stipulation that the winner of the Rumble gets a title shot at Mania 7. This sets up Hogan vs Warrior 2 - Title vs Career. Hogan Wins the belt possible turning heel in the process.

Warrior should have feuded with PERFECT, EARTHQUAKE in 1990.
@Dizzy1980
@Dizzy1980 4 жыл бұрын
@@Drummer8282 Warrior/Earthquake would've been interesting, but Warrior/Hogan again would've been a terrible idea regardless of the circumstances. The familiarity would've been too great for either man to overcome. Hogan NEVER would've succeeded as a heel in 1991, not even close. Warrior/Savage at Wrestlemania VII was a much better match and a much better program that carried the WWF as well (and arguably better) as Hogan/Slaughter.

I love RICK RUDE but how can you give the Warrior a push and give him an opponent who he had a feud a year before with? Hogan always got fresh new talent to work with. Plus He had only 2 Major pay per views which he was WWF CHAMP, given an opponent who he fought in 3 out of 4 Major pay per views the previous year and then loses it to SGT SLAUGHTER at the Royal Rumble'91. Warrior should have had different wrestler's to wrestle with but obviously didn't.
@johnepants
@johnepants 4 жыл бұрын
I have said this on other videos, but Hogan mowed through all of the top heels in 1989, and also the top heels of 1990. Warrior should have feuded with Perfect and Earthquake for the belt, but instead, Hogan got Perfect in the first half of the year and beat him in April, and also got Earthquake as the big summer storyline. I think it’s grossly unfair to say Warrior didn’t draw as champion when the focus was still placed on Hogan so much.
@GG-ju5mi
@GG-ju5mi 4 жыл бұрын
@@johnepants Your right, WWF didn't FULLY give the Ball to WARRIOR & say "OK RUN WITH IT" cuz they had "1 Foot in and 1 Foot out" and still was pushing HOGAN!!! Yer right, WARRIOR Should have had a Feud in 1990 with MR PERFECT, EARTHQUAKE (Even though he did Wrestle them a Few time's on House Show's) and in 1991/92 could have feuded with SID JUSTICE, RIC FLAIR instead of PAPA SHANGO!!!
@johnepants
@johnepants 4 жыл бұрын
GG #79 it would also be interesting to see what the plan could have been had the Gulf War not happened. There would be no Sgt Slaughter push. Would Warrior have been able to hold onto the strap and have a rematch with Hogan at WM7? Or would he have had a big title feud with Macho Man and have a Career Ending Title Match. I think the Rude/Hogan/Macho Man feuds proved that when Warrior was motivated, he would have classic matches.

It's always eerie to me when Prichard talks about Ventura. It's almost like he's either too afraid to say something negative over fear of lawsuit or there was a lot of enmity to gaslight him while he was employed, especially after his role in the Predator I think Ventura is the most underrated of the golden era, similar to how Sable is underrated in the Attitude Era, both of whom were major stars and neither needed the industry. Both were perfect complements to the key stars Hogan and Austin respectively. Ventura was the perfect anti-Hogan, while Sable best captured the general mindless, late 90s ascetic turn of culture. But Ventura was so much more than that. He laid out strategy, had consistent ethics about what was permissible in the ring, and called out the WWF's schizophrenia in endorsing good guys who cheated, used weapons, or beat women. Ventura wasn't wrong to say something like Duggan is fine to use a 2x4 against Dino Bravo, who at best had his manager take minor liberties in the ring. Duggan didn't use proportional force, while McMahon would be your Cold War patriotard. I also think Ventura was the unsung hero of the 1989 success between Hogan and Savage over Elizabeth by calling her a golddigger, Hogan as trying to innocuously sexually grope her, and telling the story of Savage's paranoia. Without him as chief instigator, the story never would have sold as well. He's the one who made what was campy WWF serious. I also liked how he wasn't as stereotypical as Heenan. Heenan never sided with good guys so in big events of two good guys facing off, Heenan made the commentary about himself. Ventura didn't do that for Warrior and Hogan, as he knew the best way to deal with fan partisanship was to promote the match as a sports fight. He sold strategy in very nuanced ways, he emaciated Vince McMahon, his remarks were hilarious, and he always made good guys look good by pushing their best moves, while chastising them over "rookie mistakes" It's clear Prichard doesn't like him. It could be professional jealousy but I feel like it's the WWF echo chamber (similar to how everyone suddenly hated the Ultimate Warrior once McMahon claimed falsely that he held a big event hostage for ransom). He can say what he would like to, but the WWF never recovered from color commentary when Ventura left. He was as good as long as Hogan stayed around. Piper was so obnoxious that I couldn't listen to him. Savage wasn't good. Heenan and Monsoon could be great but their stuff was best in selling comedy banter for exhausting squash marathons. Ventura was the one you wanted for the big events! I don't think Lawler ever came close later on, and he could be funny as quick as he would be grating. Ross was good but Ventura sold strategy so much better Ventura was the guy you hated but to whom you had to listen to get your scoops. Super underrated

@vannavanity1195
@vannavanity1195 2 жыл бұрын
@@butch5419 Yeah, so, the story came from McMahon for 15 years, believed by Meltzer, that Warrior held him hostage for Summer Slam 1991. Turns out that McMahon agreed to his demands 6 weeks prior. He didn't fire him until the night of. In short, McMahon claimed he was curve balled for years. McMahon wasn't since he did agree to pay him Hogan money. That came out in a lawsuit upon discovery in 2004 or so Too bad too. Warrior was awesome 👌 Underrated worker, not as good as Hogan, much better face than Bret Hart, could've made it in any era in wrestling, super intense guy, listened to when he spoke, really intelligent. Drawback is he could be hard to work with, wasn't really respected though I think a lot of that was jealousy and group thing. Warrior was better than Jake Roberts and Texas Tornado, both of whom get a lot of praise. He had much better matches against the same opponents than both side. Facts. Yet people uncritically repeat group think since doing so is supposedly the educated thing to do. Whatever. Warrior was never the same performer after that IMO. He came back in 1992, and he just seemed to treat it like a job. Sad. He was awesome up until 1991.

I agree with the guy that asked about the lack of promotion. As a kid I remember we would get a TV guide with the Sunday paper and every Sunday first thing I would do is look to the following Saturday's schedule to see if SNME was on cause I never knew when it was on and I watched the syndicated shows regularly. Also watched Prime Time Wrestling every week but admittedly didn't always make it through the whole show before bed so maybe they did some promotion then.

This was a fun episode. I loved the wild kingdom theme to Saturday Nights Main Event. It did its job of setting things up on the road to Summerslam 1990. Dave Silva did a great job with the art work as always. Ultimate Warrior was a great performer in the ring. He might have been a pain in the ass backstage but he was a presence in the ring. The match with Rude did a great job of setting up the Steel Cage Match for Summerslam.
