As a professional interior designer, I'm so excited to see these principle discussed. That's exactly what Feng Shui is, it's not a huge fix, it's subtle in the help it provides. I'm so passionate that a well planned room can change the comfort levels of the space and it was great to see the desks moved to positions I personally would've been so much more comfortable with. Not necessarily Feng Shui related but there is something to be said about the proportions of the objects added as well. They touched on the rugs being too small, which they were, but the mirrors weren't sized correctly either and felt disconnected with the rest of the interior decorations. I am bummed to hear that Steph worked with a snobby interior decorator, it's such a mixed bag sometimes but I'd encourage her (and anyone looking to hire a designer) to shop around! There are so many wonderful designers out there that would be more then happy to work with their clients!

I’d love to see the Theorists return to this in a month or two to see if it has any difference. I remember when Feng Shui was BIG NEWS back in the late 90s (yeah, I’m that old) and it filled so many tv shows, magazines and books. I remember a few daytime tv shows tested it out (here in the uk anyway!) and they all swore that it made a huge difference… It’s interesting that everyone liked the green in the spaces. From what I’ve read, green is always called the creative colour (I don’t care what DHMIS says!) so maybe that marries up? I reckon it does make a difference, but not for any woowoo reasons. More that it opens up the space and creates a calmer, less distracting environment and prevents dust build-up. As well as this try out, it would be a fascinating deep dive in future.

I’m really glad that Ash acknowledged the lack of Object Permanence that most ADHDers experience. Cause I struggle with the same thing. Feng Shui seems like one of those things that probably does have benefits if you are doing it correctly but they are almost certainly overstated by those trying to make a profit off of it. What I would expect to be the ACTUAL purpose of Feng Shui is to be mindful of your environment and the way you set it up rather than the positioning of the chairs in a certain way itself having some sort magic effect over your mood. Being mindful of ones environment is believed to be able make somebody feel more in control and reduce anxiety. I feel like Feng Shui has gotten reduced to only its aesthetic elements which got rid of the aspect of it that was actually healing which is the mindful part of paying attention to how the arrangements of a space effects its functionality aswell as your emotions.
@kayohwai Жыл бұрын
Feng Shui seems to be an early version of Industrial/Organizational Psychology. The mysticism of it seems to be more of a mix of pneumonic devices and proto-psychological reasonings. Certain layouts work better for productivity, sense of security, and minimization of distraction. All three of these things generally improve mood.

In their results, I wish they had shared some more thoughts about the furniture arrangement of the room. Especially since that's such an important part of feng shui. Both the rooms in the video had the desks turned to face into the room instead of the wall. For me personally, that is a MASSIVE difference and I feel much better facing into the room. I feel more in control of the room and at ease with the space around me. But they didn't really elaborate on this in the video. I also feel like a LOT could be improved with that office in the new apartment. Yes, it looked sterile, because it was. Be careful not to confuse "get rid of clutter" with "get rid of all the decorations." It's okay to decorate. (Keeping in mind that it's a new apartment and they're still moving in, of course.) And at night, I would recommend using two or three small lamps placed around the room instead of that horrendous overhead light. I also recommend lighting color that's in the 2850K to 3000K range, which is kind of like the lighting you'd expect in an art gallery, cooler than incandescent but warmer than fluorescent.

As someone with anxiety (and ADHD hehe) I have always felt the stress in clutter, so it's funny to see that in this video because I'm constantly reminded of that anxious feeling if a room is not clean.
@lexwhy554 Жыл бұрын
As a person with severe ADHD ive intuitively been using feng shui to optimise the last three spaces I lived in and its been a life changer. Making your space work for you, instead of trying to fit in a space built for someone else is key. I used to never be able to file my clothes and put them on shelves in a wardrobe so I got a hanging clothing rack. I used to struggle with loads of dirty laundry on the floor near my bed bc im a morning shower person so i got a hamper next to my bed - it made the task of picking up the dirty laundry infinitely more confident. I get severe anxiety when sitting in a desk thats facing a wall, so i turned mine around. Even if it looked weird, it was incredibly practical. Right now I live in a one-room apartament and using the zoning philosophy from feng shui ive been able to devide it into four seperate zones for different activities - work space, bed space, clothing zone and kitchen, and even if there is very little space it feels open and spacious. Its just funciontal and having a functional space removes room for frustrations.

My room is constantly cluttered and I’ve tried for years to keep it clean. Stuff is left everywhere. I want to make it a place I can actually move around in and enjoy. Thanks for the inspiration, Team Theorist! P.s. Maybe I’ll post updates to keep me accountable lol
@perevision Жыл бұрын
Ask a friend for help! Even if they just sit around chatting to you while you clean it makes a big difference. It’s better when there’s two of you doing the work though, and then you can treat them to coffee or lunch 😊

I think theres a lot of scientific basis for feng shui, although specifically organizing my living space like an exam room sounds like a nightmare lol that would raise my stress levels so much, even looking at the minimalist barebones office space made me anxious

I actually love this video so much, it immidiately reminded me of that one guy who reviews people's rooms with Feng Shui and ive slowly but surely been taking notes from him to structure my own limited space. I honestly feel like it has deeper connections to psychology than we might give it credit for, especially since a lot of it has seemingly been backed up by actual research (such as the plant and greenery thing), so i think the stuff we might not be able to put a solid idea to could absolutely change the way you operate and feel

as someone living with parents due to the rising cost of living, and owning alot of stuff from living out of home, add onto having the smallest room in the house, it makes it really hard to just not have clutter. i have a mix of bedroom, study, storage and wardrobe all cramped into a small room. i had re arranged many times just to keep things fresh, but until i can save enough for a decent deposit (which rises by the day) i will have to deal with having to share my space with my clutter

I think the whole idea has some merit in terms of making rooms feel more comfortable or less overwhelming. I was on holiday once with a bed facing directly towards a door and i felt a bit uncomfortable trying to sleep

I actually feel very anxious with my back to the door not knowing who or what might creep up on me. But with my eyes towards the door I do feel much more in control of the room.

22:24 Ash, have you seen the Clutterbug quiz? You might be a butterfly, which means you need to have your stuff organized so it is visually available, even if it is physically put away. It was a life-changing realization when I saw what I was doing wrong...
@sillypplproductions2 Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for suggesting this, even if it was directed towards Ash. I actually ended up being a butterfly as well, and now some things about how and why my spaces are the way they are make a lot more sense. ;^;

I TOTALLY feel Ash's thoughts. I too have ADHD, when it comes to having things put away out of sight. Object permanence is a HUGE issue. If I don't see it or touch it everyday then it will just disappear

It turns out I was unknowingly using Feng-Shui for so long! Recently I reorgenized a lot of rooms in my house I disliked entering, like the laundry room & the storage room who were.... a bit more than messy. I cleaned them and then "reshaped" the room for more space to move through, It was such a massive change! I knew where everything was! Although each room took ~8 hours of cleaning & organizing (mainly organizing), it made all the difference. So thank you to the 40 Ted-Talks I listened to for months. And my parents for helping me through this lol

Interior design student here! I love how you guys incorporated everything in your space, the few things i would change is get a set palette for the space and hang up a bit more pictures/decor. It isn't Feng Shui, but it is interior design, and my little goblin brain turned on when i heard 'redecorating'.

As someone with AuDHD (ADHD/autism) I definitely do believe Fung-Shui is a thing. I have an apartment that has a "sunroom" instead of your traditional balcony and it lets in so much sunlight and I love it, and I have lots of vine lights hanging in my apartment to give the plant feel. I also feel extreme stress when I have an extremely messy apartment and I feel relief when it's on the cleaner side. I also use open "doom" boxes for regular clutter so I have a place for it and don't tear the apartment apart looking for something lol Also, Ash, you look absolutely stunning wearing hoops 🥰 Edit: 22:30 to combat object permanence issues I store everything in clean bins/buckets or baskets and label bins as well so I know what's the general category of stuff inside; also, to combat sterileness of an environment I add artwork I enjoy, in particular in my living room I have lots of portraits of cats in different historical garbs/references and it gives me so much joy to look at

I absolutely have noticed a difference! I live in a small apartment, where most of my clutter typically goes on the kitchen table, but I cleaned it up last week and I know I’ve already felt less stressed in my space even though this week has been relatively busier than the last! Thanks for this video!

It is a feedback cycle with a lot of mental illnesses. The declining mental health perpetuates clutter and less cleaning/tidying up and the declining quality of the living space further negatively affects the mental health.
@kitcat8308 Жыл бұрын
It's causation vs correlation I think.... Like , the clutter can definitely make me feel worse/ I feel a little better when I am able to deal with cleaning.... but things get cluttered because I'm dealing with my mental health/ physical struggles.... It makes my struggles worse cause of the thoughts of " you're a failure, you should be able to do this" .... And I feel a little better because I "finally" was able to "Do the thing"
