I'm a dentist. You can brush your teeth with a manual or an electric toothbrush. It's all about your technique! Electric toothbrushes are great because they make brushing easier. They can also have cool features like a timer and a pressure sensor. That's why I recommend them. But remember, toothbrushes bristles can't fit between your teeth. That's why we say to use floss, to clean those tight spots. It's best to brush your teeth two times every day, but if you can only do it once, do it before bed. When you sleep, you don't want the germs in your mouth to eat your dinner leftovers all night. When you brush with toothpaste that has fluoride, only spit it out and don't rinse if you are a grown up. You want the fluoride to stay on your teeth to make them strong!
@Lmb_kun Жыл бұрын
So the 2 minute rule for brushing is pointless..
@Furen Жыл бұрын
@@Lmb_kunhe mentioned a timer. My toothbrush has a pressure senser to watch me from pressing too hard, and goes off every 30 seconds to tell me to move on. It reminds me to check everywhere. However, as a once-a-dayer, I'm glad that before bed is better than the morning since that's what I do. Maybe this will push me to be a 2 times a day person though.

I am sure others have mentioned it here, but I figured echoing crucial information is never a bad thing. I will preface this all with the fact that I am not a Dentist or a trained professional related to teeth. I have had the wonderful opportunity to work with several amazing dentist that give me lots of insight and information: 1. When using an electric or sonic tooth brush you actually need to do a different holding and brushing method. I have never heard of this "hold it and let the spin move around the teeth". My dentists have told me that you are supposed to hold the brush at and angle towards the gum and hold it in place. Slowly moving it laterally (forward and back). You need to put the strength in to hold it in place to make sure it brushes everything properly. The other way to see it is that if you are moving it around, then the moving brush won't be able to properly scrub the surface. It won't be able to go deep enough. 2. Also another great thing about new electric tooth brushes is that they have a self timer of 2 min in them. So many of them shut off after 2 minutes which reminds you to keep brushing that whole duration. Some even have intermittent buzzing (at like 30 sec) as a heads up. 3. One of the nurses that cleaned up my teeth told me that if I were ever too busy to brush and floss, that I should always choose to floss. This comment is directed towards someone who is in their late 20s so this probably doesn't apply to everyone. But she emphasized that floss is one of the most important things to do. Its THE way to get rid of plaque. I think the first point is the most important. Sadly this might mean that your results are a little skewed. But it also highlights the fact that these tools are becoming common place, but many are not aware of the proper technique to use them so in the end they come out being used improperly and seen as less effective. (Definitely looking at Amy as she is violently brushing her teeth with the electric tooth brush). Just wanted to put this out there to share information to ensure the general public are more aware of these facts

I have a friend who is a pediatric dentist, and not only has he always told me that manual brushes are better than electric brushes as most are just gimmicks, he also tells me that dental pics and water pics can't come close to the clean of plain old floss. After this, I'm going to keep trusting his judgement.

I also trust your friend's judgment
@PhotonBeast Жыл бұрын
Same; I had a dental hygienist (one who taught me how to properly brush and all so trusted source) note to me that a water pick is NOT the same thing/doesn't do the same thing as flossing. The pick will flush out chunks and bits of food and such (which is useful, for sure), but can't actually get into the spaces the same way flossing can.

Ooh yes! I'm a diehard tangle teezer fan: I've owned at least 10 of their brushes over the past ~15 years... different sizes & styles, some duplicates for different rooms/bags - only had one break because I dropped it too many times on tile, and one where the teeth deformed quite badly bc I used it with the blowdryer even though I knew you're not supposed to do that with the detangling brushes 😂. I've tried a ridiculous amount of brushes over the years and nothing comes close to a tangle teezer - I have longish, thick, processed hair so there are a lot of knots & tangles to deal with and other brushes just hurt or take too long and rip knots out rather than actually detangling them 🙃. (The only other brushes I do actually love and use are kent boar bristle brushes but they're more for smoothing and distributing the oils at my roots down to the lengths). I'd be super interested to see if there are any other brushes nowadays that compare bc I'm not gonna try another brand at this point unless I know I'm not wasting my money 😅

As someone who uses a waterpik, I really hope that yall actually do the flossing one. I think the key point is if you use a manual you are likely to brush for less than 2 minutes whereas if you use an electric the built in timer encourages you to go for the full 2 minutes. This study by ensuring that everyone goes for the 2 minutes eliminated the actual advantage of the electric.

For me the technique is more important than the brush. I pre-brush my teeth without toothpaste first to focus on removing plaque then a second brush with toothpaste to freshen up. I do this twice a day. You want to feel the plaque is gone but don't brush too hard.

@skittydreamsd4766 Жыл бұрын
@@MegaLokopo That’s what plaque is? It’s biofilm containing both bacteria and food debris. Brushing and flossing is enough to get it off because it’s soft. The metal tools can be used for plaque in deeper periodontal pockets, but are mainly for calculus. Most of the plaque is actually just polished off with paste and when they floss your teeth.

I'm also a once-a-day brusher in the morning with an old-fashioned medium brush and my teeth are doing just fine. Also, against the recommendation of literally every dentist I've had, I use the flossers instead of floss string (my saliva density and hand/mouth size make using floss string a drooling endeavor at best and unfeasible at worst).
@Celinra Жыл бұрын
Related to brushing teeth, I once heard that it's better to brush before eating than after, the reason being that you're leaving your teeth with a level of protection, whereas brushing after can just grind leftover food particles into your teeth, making it worse in the long run. It'd be interesting to see a test on that if there's a follow-up to this theory. ...although maybe I'd rather NOT see that, since right now, that very nicely justifies my "brush once a day when I first wake up" routine, and I'm not sure I want to put that at risk.

I’m actually very curious to see how the brushes did on the backs of the teeth. I know it’s obviously more difficult to take pictures of, but in my experience that’s where most plaque buildup happens due to it being harder to reach (I also have a permanent retainer, which makes it more difficult to floss too)

Hello there, I'm a dental student here to answer your question! You really don't need much toothpaste, and that's because toothpaste doesn't really do much to remove plaque. 80% or more of the plaque that is removed when you brush is from the mechanical action of the toothbrush. So, if you were to brush without toothpaste, it would be at least 80% as effective as brushing with toothpaste. The main benefit of toothpaste is the fluoride, and the other ingredients are much more about the psychology of making you feel clean. So, as long as you have enough toothpaste to put a thin layer over your teeth, you're all set! It doesn't take much.

Tips on electric toothbrushes from discussions I've had with dentists: Don't use them like "brushes" (i.e. rubbing them back and forth), just give them a second or two to sit on each tooth (but remember to do all sides of each tooth). Specifically talking about the rotating round ones, angle them so they can do their work and clean stuff out from under the edge of your gums. The main reasons I prefer electric toothbrushes is because of the ease and consistency. I struggle with being certain I'm doing things "right", so having something that brushes at a consistent speed and has a built in timer for how long to brush my teeth means I don't have to keep questioning if I've been doing enough/not too much. Also, I struggle a bit with some of the movements required for brushing my teeth with a regular toothbrush, so having something I can just hold and put against my teeth gives me a much better ability to properly reach all the parts of my mouth.

I switched from a rotating electric brush to Sonicare and the big benefit is, that Sonicare has solid stems, while the rotating ones are hollow. For me that resulted in all sorts of mouth fluids to run through the brushhead down my arm with no way of stopping that. With Sonicare I can brush for way longer and hopefully getting a better cleaning result.
