I always thought that Kate Blanchette got the "ethereal" label because she played Galadriel in the LOTR films. If you've seen *any* of her Red Carpet looks, she is much edgier/dramatic than that in her personal style. Same with Tilda Swinton.

You got a point there. She just imprinted herself in all our consciousnesses as Galadriel, the ethereal elven queen. Of the examples given in the video, I personally liked her much more in the shiny, black pantsuit than the pastel colored ones. Although admittedly she herself must disagree with this, as she seems to favor these colors. But to me, that first outfit just had a 'wow factor', the others didn't have.

To be fair, she wouldn’t have been cast as Galadriel in the first place if she didn’t have that Ethereal quality. Casting directors typically choose actors who very much “look” the part.

This makes so much sense! As someone who skews more youthful, but with a combination of feminine and masculine, it totally explains why two of my top three essences are ingenue and gamine, why I’ve always felt at ease with my bright spring palette, but somewhat conflicted about the Soft Dramatic recommendations. Also why I always felt like I was playing dress-up every time I tried corporatecore traditional office wear.

This explains a lot! I recently tried on some mature outfits with more structure and they fit ok but did not really seem like "me". I also tried on one more softer but form fitting "feminine" outfit and wow it really did seem like me. I also have tried a dress that was lacy and form fitting but in a cool and muted palette when I am warm and pretty bright and it did not look as bad as some things I have tried in "my colors" but were too baggy or masculine looking on me. Thanks. That really clarifies things.

This video helped me realize that I have completely disregarded the print suggestions for my season and that it's not a bad thing. I'm a Deep/Dark Winter but have an ingenue/youthful essence, so the suggested large patterns for my season just look off. I've been leaning into high contrast, small floral prints, and I've never been happier! I think it's a happy medium and fits well with the style I'm exploring right now, which is kinda cutesy/girly, witchy, and casual. Fits my playful personality, too.

I love this , it helps organise the knowledge I have about myself to make things appear more clear and simplified instead of scattered. Thank you. I would definitely say I'm somewhere in-between youthful-feminine and mature-feminine . I have tried all kinds of styles , boyish and masculine styles seem to look separate from me . Youthful feminine can work really well on me if everything is narrow and small and there aren't too many frills and things ,it has to be balanced . Mature feminine looks great on me with the midi / midi-maxi lengths and I think that's why I can't handle too much youthful feminine details . This aligns with my essences and kibbie i.d and luckily my DA CS

As for the chart, it's more universal, as it combines both the physical traits and our preferences or would-like-to-wear-it-will-this-suit-me stuff - some guidelines, of sorts. It's so nice when you show WHY something works (or does not). Loved the video, and, as always, I really enjoy your way with words ❤ Sometimes going too far outside of "your" chart can look costumey, that's true... I already figured out that I'm a dark winter with a gamine essence, but what if I'd like some gentle details not going into "too feminine it would make me look ridiculous" territory? I tend to choose softer/more flowy fabrics for oversized clothes, or cool pastel colours. Or A-line skirts with men shirts and oxfords, which is the closest I can adjust the corporate style to :D Looking forward to the next part (maybe, adding the colours to this chart, going with or against our features? or the updated video about the facial gender?) ❤

I like this, a lot! I’ve really enjoyed thinking about coloring as 3 continuums, instead of 4/12/16 season boxes. So this approach really appeals to me! However, I am 55 years old (and although that may seem ancient!) I usually enjoy wearing a trendy/artsy/whimsical piece (like a bold piece of jewelry or silver sneakers or a graphic T) with everything else being relatively sedate/classic. (I teach at a university, so I can get away with that sort of wardrobe). What I’m saying is that-from my age-Youthful-Mature might not be as good end points as some other descriptors you used. But I really enjoy how you are re-thinking categories that have been around for decades! Thanks!

Great video! I really like this perspective. I think I fall pretty squarely in the middle, maybe leaning just slightly masculine and youthful. What I take away is that I look best when I don’t lean in to any of the extremes. Subtlety is my sweet spot. For what it’s worth, I also think I am a dramatic classic in the kibbe system and have classic with some gamine essence in the Kitchener system. 😊

The simplicity and clarity is super helpful. For future videos (def want more!) - examples of what the youthful masculine quadrant looks like for different contrast and in the 4 main color seasons; I noticed the examples for each quadrant had a cohesive general color story; are you suggesting to create your own moodboard of how you would wear each quadrant and give it a name like the awesome creator example? I think you looked the most at home in the tomboyish styles, the femenine styles kind of dragged you down and looked heavier(like in presence not something else) and the mature style I have seen you in tends to lack energy (? In my opinion for younger people (me included) we sometimes have an issue separating how mature-childish we looked/were considered in school or as children vs the reality of who we are now as adults and how we fit within the pallete of adults "looks" as a whole. I think you have a mature vibe in your videos because of how you choose to present yourself and speak, but when you show us snippets of you speaking with your husband or you make little faces when thinking/finding the right word it adds his youthful/joyous air to you that just seems very radiant. It reminded me of a video I saw today from Elle Dashwoods channel here on KZbin about the regency era concept of countenance (it is titled how to get mr darcy or something similar), that basically explained a persons beauty isn't just a still of them like a statue but how their personality bleeds through. I think your impression your "countenance" is actually much more playful than you might think it is and I think that happens to a lot of people (also in reverse). For example I would describe your hairstyle here as decidedly playful and it suits you brilliantly 😊 In general we also forget that maturity/childishness and femininity/masculinity is to a certain extent cultural, so maybe my way of perceiving you through the internet isn't quite the same as the people around you irl. Either way lovely video, I have much to think now...

​@@YumeraChauque I don't really know anything about essences but the way I would describe Jen is serene and playful. Like the way she moves her face to emote and her hands are detailed and energetic, but like in a playful way not in a childish way, so not baby talk and not dainty, just... transparent/carefree I suppose? I associate maturity with something that is cohesive but like... stagnant, slomotion-like? Like it is an elegance that requires stillness and distance, if that makes sense. But Jen's serenity is different, it is the serenity of walking into the forest or hearing the ocean waves, you are there in the middle but it is still serene. Maturity to me reads a lot more like a well kept garden or a nice urban view from a high building, there is definitely a kind of serenity there but there is a level of human intervention (?) there, like you have to create distance to "work" to achieve that kind of serenity. Jen seems to be very sincere in her day to day life, it even bleeds through in her professional presentation skills and her expressions in videos from time to time. Mature is just... not how I would describe her 😅

In the summertime, what feels authentic on me seems to shift to more feminine colours and styles. I think this will help me not make the mistake of going youthful feminine. Excellent. I'm never too sure about masculine versus feminine but I'm learning. Kate Blanchette was already on my Pinterest boards. I love her style.

Even if it's just about being able to tell what your style is absolutely not, the generalized 4 quadrants are very helpful. I was instantly like "Feminine and mature is SO NOT MY STYLE", it's more in between masculine and mature and masculine and youthful (with a slight leaning towards the middle of the spectrum). My naturally given visual impact is definitely not as yang leaning as that of a dramatic. I like to throw in a few more feminine silhouettes here and there, but not in the form of a low neckline, ruffles or something like that. More in the form of a cute pattern, rather "feminine" colors, a tight fit, a bit of draping or something like that. I rarely wear dresses or skirts and if I do, they are more on the plain side without any fuzz. I really like more masculine styles and often find my favorite pieces in the men's section of a store. The colors I like on myself are often times found in way more feminine clothes, as you mentioned, which is why I tend to stock up on my favorites whenever I can find them in my beloved colors. It's not that I hate how super feminine clothes look on me, it's just that I don't like how I feel in them. Whenever I tried to shift my style into a more feminine one I hated the clothes and would really only wear them once and neglect them after. I do think the contrast of my partially more feminine features and the masculine outfits is amazing and I really prefer that for me. That's where I personally had to hop off the Kibbe bandwagon and do my own thing because I am really not all about looking my most feminine and polished, I'm more like an approachable rebel when it comes to styling an outfit for myself. That's also what I'd name my own aesthetic "approachable rebel" it makes sense while it makes no sense and that just perfectly fits my personality as well xD

That makes sense. I lean towards mature feminine features but lifestyle I favor youthful masculine. The colors have to be deep and soft so that's another mature need. I guess that does kind of fit the theatrical romantic femme fatale stereotype in its own way. The silhouette is a big key. That's where I've gotten off track.

I love this! It's so helpful. And it makes sense. As someone who recently finally found the correct color season, I have actually found shopping to be easier and more fun. I'm a bright winter, but I follow the thinking that the sister seasons are acceptable as well. I think of it like a Bullseye with the bright winter in the center, with the bright Spring and True winter as the outer circles. I know that when I'm looking for clothing in my colors, I'm looking for cool, clear or bright colors. I don't find it limiting at all, because I'm not concerned with perfection. But I can easily breeze right past colors that are warm and muted now. I can stop trying to make myself look good in colors like dusty rose and Olive green that look great on others, and now I know why. I've been implementing this strategy for less than a year, and have gotten more compliments than I have in the past decade because I'm finally wearing good colors for me. I also realize that some colors have strong psychological impact such as black that a summer wouldn't look as good in, but she may want to look powerful or confident. I'm not discounting that truth, I'm just sharing my personal experience.

This is a great approach and I think it’s going to work well for me. I’ve been exploring a bunch of these typing systems and find that I’m full of contradictions, making it hard to land on a type in some systems. Often the recommendations don’t fit what I’m attracted to, or what I feel actually complements me. You’ve given me some ideas on how I want to experiment with my style going forward.

I lean mature-feminine 75% of the time until I dress for a campfire where I lose the feminine and go mature-masculine. The only time I crossover to youthful-feminine is when I wear a floral sundress to walk on the beach or my PJ’s! My takeaway is that all except one of those styles live in me. What’s funny about the quadrant you made is that my style which is a variation of preppy would fit in the masculine and youthful quadrant, mainly because even though my style is very feminine I’m not a fan of flowy fitted garments and rather the femininity of the garments to be felt in the print or colour. Think structured mini skirt with a puppy print with a tshirt in white or cream and a pink cardigan, maybe Oxford shoes and a short socks, newsboy hat and a letter bag, never mind the ending I lost track of

Another great video with good examples with both Kate B and yourself in a lot of pictures in the diagram. I am a true summer with both madculine and feminine features in my face. Its easier to find my style if I think about what I am NOT! I'm not a tomboy and neither a young feminine girlie type. I think I'm more feminine mature with a lot of casual and comfortable clothes in my day to day wear. But when I dress up I look fab in a wrap dress in dark red or a long summerdress in fuschia. The Kibby system was tricky for me but I think my body is maybe a soft dramatic, with a more robust bone structure, but with an hourglass figure with some boobs. I'm 5'5 inches tall, so I'm not as tall as a soft dramatic "should " be. Your diagram makes a lot of sense, thank you for doing these great analyses for us!

Also I find that age has a lot to do with style - I can’t wear the micro minis I use to in my 20’s - but I can wear the suits I love in my 50’s. I noticed awhile back that according to how Kitchener seems to categorise essences, ethereal are basically just light coloured dramatics. I literally gave up with Kibbe as my style and what I love sits right between natural and nature with lots of feminine touches yet in Kibbe I'm a dramatic and the style is so so far away from what I actually like so instead I'm going with just what I like alongside practicality for being a mum who does very long hours working

As far as I know Cate Blanchett's natural hair color once was brunette. The ethereal essence doesn't make much sense anyway if one is already familiar with Harriet McJimsey's essence system and it's original meaning. Cate would be a great example for the pure dramatic type. Nothing more complicated added. You get one or a blend of two types max. and you're fine. That's what I love about it. So simple and easy to understand. You go for the general vibe and don't analyse a face divided into 1000 pieces separately up to the point where you don't know who or what you actually are anymore.

Ah,finally someone who share the same opinion about it🤗,people get too fixate about finding 3+ essences when in reality most people are one or maximum 2 essences, rarely I find 3 or 4. Me as an example, I am a mix of gamine(body) and ingenue (face) the problem is that people get very fixate in one feature like "oh I have big and round eyes so I can't be a dramatic " or "I have small eyes so I can't be in the ingenue essence " but,I think what is more important is the overall vibe of the face,Karolina Zebrwoska(a youtuber)has big round eyes but she is a dramatic because everything else is big so it looks balanced,or IU (kpop singer)doesn't have big eyes but are rounded and everything else is small and round so she stills fall in the ingenue. And,in my opinion ethereal essence is just a variant of D and C .

@@YumeraChauque Yes, exactly. It's the overall vibe that counts. McJimsey actually encourages people to choose their essence types based on that in the chapter where she explains how to do it. When I read her book I found the angelic is a blended type made of dramatic and ingenue essence - both pure and rare types. They're typically tall and sophisticated, appear mature, have dignity etc. which comes from the dramatic side and they got the ingenue part, because with age people tend to return to some extend to the softness of childhood when they're very old.... therefore the timeless/ageless and wise vibe of the ethereal. Kitchener even took soft fluffy wools like angora from the ingenue and gave it the angelic/ethereal. The classic got it's matureness and dignity from the dramatic type as the classic is a so called intermediate type in McJimsey's system. It's so interesting to research the origins of the essences 🙂

So many items marked $50-$200 that look great in pictures, but HORRIBLE in person, but even my husband could see the CHEAP quality of this clothes (that says A LOT) What is happening? I have a little problem. I have definitely masculine, mature features. But I'm a soft natural according to kibbe, so stiff lines and structured outfits are out of the ecuation. In case that wasn't enough, my color analysis places me within the true spring season (not really masculine either and definitely not mature). What do we do when nothing seems to fit into a style that's coherent?

Mmmm you could do like this: light fabrics for curve and width acomodation in bright leaning colors(,this is your feminine part to honor you body) but use simple,clean lines and avoid frills and overly intricate things. Im sorry, but what's the problem with making a custom suit? There is a huge variety of seamstress everywhere at any price point. And it's easier to find your color in the fabric store. If you know your color and your line, you can create a perfect suit only for you.
