OMG as a soft dramatic, I never understood why knee length dresses and skirts only looked good on me unless I wore heels until this video!! I totally would think I’m “following all the rules,” getting a good SD wrap dress, following the rule of thirds, etc, but it just never sat right, even though it would look good on others. I even have one particular dress in mind that for all intents and purposes “checked all the boxes,” for kibbe, for color analysis, for my day to day needs… but I ended up selling it bc I never felt my best in it, and now I know why! This is why I LOVE your channel…. Girl, I am so tired of boring videos that don’t tell me anything new 😂 but you’re not just “style 101,” you’re “style 401!” This higher level of thinking is SO refreshing, and *actually* helpful! Being overweight makes me not want to wear belts or draw any attention to my midsection even though I know the outfit would look better styled with waist emphasis. I really enjoy how you explain things and the pictures you show are clearly make your point. I think I may be a soft dramatic and that may be the reason very casual clothes have always looked sloppy on me whereas they looked cute on my friends. I’m 5’8” so people always say I have long legs. But I also found Bermuda shorts etc strange on me. Now I understand why, my shins are short compared to long thighs! Please also discuss tips for pear shapes. But not the “usual” tips, because they always show fuller women. I’m lean, tall, have a tiny waist but have big hips/butt. I’m a narrow small build overall except for hips which sometimes makes the styles I like look frumpy.

This is the video I didn't know I needed! Thank you! At 5'4" with a short torso and long legs, slender limbs and curvy, the best way to for me to incorporate the rule of thirds was to wear knee length dresses, Bermuda shorts or capris that fall right below the knee. They really balance me out. Fashion police say these are out of style and make you look old. When I wear them, I get compliments in real life. I've had to go against the grain and often only find what works for me in thrift shops from years past. Short shorts look ridiculous on me. This video helps me put words to the feelings I've had about my body and style.❤

@@mahamzahid7846 I hope it helps! So the bottom third is from the floor to where the bottom of the shorts hits the knee, the middle third is from the bottom of the short to where the shirt hits the top of the shorts, and the top third is from the bottom of the shirt to the top of the head. The tricky part is faking a waist below the belly button near the top of the hip to help create the top third. Sometimes it requires tucking. Also getting a boxy cropped shirt sometimes works. I’ve been struggling with this recently. If I tuck my top, my waistband basically comes up to my boobs (short-waisted and large-chested). If I don’t tuck, I end up being cut in half and I look dumpy. I’m starting to think I’m not built for separates!
@pajamamama5965

I have that problem too. Dresses do solve the problem but I don't like to wear them in the cold weather. I try to find tops that fall at the top of my hip. A boxy shape shirt works because even though it doesn't accentuate the waist, it also doesn't draw attention to the short distance between the waist and the bottom of the boob. Also monochromatic tops and bottoms works best, but having a lower contrast draws less attention to the line at the waist too. Belts look ridiculous on me. I like to wear oversized earrings and bright lipstick to draw visual attention to my face instead.

You know who else favors full-length dresses and miniskirts, but never knee-length or midi? I think the propotions of these parts of the body are somehow kibbe related, for example romantics have a short waist,so waist emphasis is essensial for not look bulky and can easly bigger in unflattering way. This is why many of them don't look good in all straight outfit without waist definition. Short Torso/Rectangle Body here! High waisted pants do not work for me. Luckily the length of my legs are somewhat proportioned with perhaps longer shins. At 5'1" I can wear some midi dresses to create visual length, but only if it is a slim, body skimming silhouette without too much volume or structure in the fabric. My legs look best if my skirt or dress hits just below the knee, especially if my outfit if mostly one tone. My proportions were good when I wore shorter skirts and shorts when I was much younger. I prefer to not show that much of my legs anymore. Not a fan of totally flat shoes with dresses or skirts, and wearing pants cropped somewhere above my ankles really looks bizarre. You are spot on about adding an interesting pattern or texture and by balancing volume with fitted!

Thank you SO much for pointing out the ways that the 1/3 on top and 2/3 on bottom “rule” doesn’t always work for everyone and should not always be followed. I hate this “rule” as I prefer a more relaxed 1:1 or 2/3 top and 1/3 bottom look as someone who prefers oversized tops (I don’t like fitted clothes on my torso esp as someone with a bigger stomach) and a sporty/relaxed style. I often find the high waisted styles on other people who follow the rule of thirds just makes their torsos look too short for their legs which makes them look short instead of the tall effect they’re going for so I appreciate that you mentioned this effect. And it’s so true that there are other ways to bring visual interest and that the point of fashion is to not just make ourselves look tall or honor our lines/body types so these rules/guidelines don’t have to always apply - it’s great to have fun just expressing your style, personality and favorite aesthetics without always worrying about flattering or harmonious considerations.

Honestly as a dramatic, i disregard the rule of 3rds almost entirely. I find that the most flattering styles on me are ones that either elongate my torso (essentially cutting me in half) or styles that maintain vertical all the way through, making no cuts at all. I dont find the 1;2 silhouette flattering because i have narrow hips so when i try to tuck shirts in the bunch up in a really unflattering way, it ends up feeling like I'm trying to accommodate curve i dont have.

I have a perfectly proportioned inner self visually, and the opposite externally. ✌😉 Ps . I believe the rule of 'naturally occuring' thirds applies right across the body, too. Ie shorter elements will replicate at chin, fore arm, calf, lower torso. Long middle face, equals long waist, long mid leg/ arm. Long forehead etc. Could be wrong, but most biology replicates a template.

I like a just below the knee or longer (midi to maxi length) on me best. I'm not tall, I'm just under 5'5" & shorter dresses don't really work for me proportionally or style wise (look too young) If you're a petite & want to lengthen your lower half but prefer shorter skirts/dresses use tights or hosiery in the same color or value of your skirt & shoes to get the impression of a longer line. (If you're a Gamine, you can add patterns or use a contrating color/tone of hosiery) Hosiery has kind of gone out of fashion or is considered dated now but it really can add visual interest to your outfit & balance out any proportional issues. It also keeps you warmer in cooler months & often has built-in smoothing/shaping panels.

It would be very helpful if you could perhaps go through each of the Kibbe ID’s with specifics regarding this topic. I understand more now for those who have vertical- but for those of us who don’t I’m confused.

I’m pretty sure I’m a DC; I also have a long torso. I have noticed that proportions are extremely important for me and there is a very very fine line I have to walk to get them correct and not make my torso look like the 2/3 part of the proportion 😅 TYSM for this, very validating.

Jen, do platform shoes, as opposed to heels, also lengthen the shins? It's a bit different look from heels. I've got short shins and I hate heels! I know what you're describing is right though.

In my experience as a short shinned person (who already has reasonably long legs), very flat platforms look the same as flats--my legs look stumpy. I only wear them with very short dresses or shorts. To overcome the midlength skirts looking disproportionate I find there has to be at least a little heel, making the top of the foot visually become part of the leg. It doesn't have to be very high heel. I have a few with 2 inch or less wedge or heel that still improve the visual length of my leg.

@@owatinay Good thinking. I suppose platforms are alright with pants though, because you are concealing the shoe and getting the illusion of height. Otherwise, a low heel with skin coloured shoes in a reasonably non-clunky shape is the ticket. I'm on the lookout.

@@notaclue822 oh yes for sure. Either really long or really short hemlines eliminate the stumpy shin problem for me, only mid length causes it because they highlight that area of my leg.

The human eye appreciates longer legs, especially those long from ankle to knee. All models have to be tall and long-legged, of course, but models with relatively long lower legs are especially valued. I’ve been using the Rule of Thirds in styling for 50 years. But, I find that the one-third on top, two-thirds on bottom proportion is the most flattering on me. We find the rule of thirds visually appealing in most things because it’s based, approximately, on the Golden Mean, or Golden Ratio, a number that has special properties in mathematics and is very prevalent in nature. I find the skirt lengths of just covering my kneecap, or just above it, are very flattering. I will go short as mid-thigh length to show off my slim legs, or as long as almost floor length. But, I just decided not to buy any more maxis, they’re just not that practical and always have to be hemmed shorter. All of these skirt/dress lengths work well with my beloved 2 to 2.5-inch heels (medium heels). I’m 5’4” and would wear higher heels if I could, but I just can’t tolerate 3-inch or higher ones (high heels), the arch pain is killer. This is the first time in my 64 years that stylish, modern medium heels are widely available, thanks to the pandemic’s influence in increasing the comfort of apparel. Finally, shoes that I love the look of, but can comfortably walk in, are no longer a rarity. I really couldn’t find anything like this during my corporate career days, my feet constantly hurt, even on weekends.

This is really interesting. My experience is the opposite. I've always been self conscious that i have short thighs and very long shins. I always wear either maxi or mini hemlines, and avoid anything in the middle just because i don't know how to style it. Maybe knee length would be flattering on me. I love maxi length things but I admit I feel self conscious and off in a mini. I should try it. I just worry about looking matronly and frumpy. Non of the images you used of women wearing a knee length hemline looked like that! I just worry I look like that.

Thank you, that really helped. I have a very long torso with loong arms (that divide my whole body in half) and short legs + short shins. I understand how to make my legs appear longer by highliting my waistline and avoiding knee length. But I always struggle with my upper body. Somehow I can't figure out how to use rule of thirds for the neckline. I NEVER know how to wear a button up or a low neckline. My upper body looks droopy and weird with low necklines and too long with high necklines....!? please help I beg you 😂🙏

I have the difference of really long limbs and long shins so I'm not trying to lengthen my legs but also not trying to shorten them. I'm always told I need to "shorten" my leg length by wearing tunic tops. But I don't necessarily want to shorten my legs! Yes, I want to look proportionate but I'm not sure why anyone would want to shorten their legs so it confuses me lol

They do this to get your attetion,if they wrote:"how to use the rule of thirds" people who already have basic knowledge would probably skip the video as they are looking for more relevant information. Please find out more tactics that youtubers use, what you wrote is embarrasing. She never assumed that viewers didn't know or were missapplying it,she just wanted to give a fresh perspective, and maybe explain why the way they are applying the rule isn't working for them.

I have a ridiculously long torso with short arms and legs. Normal knee placement relative to my leg length. I’m fairly straight at a heavy weight but start leaning into an hourglass shape at a smaller size. I also have a big butt and most of my weight sits in my lower abdomen giving a weird egg shape from the side. (Thanks pcos) I’ve found what works for me is a high waisted long denim skirt to my ankles. My top is fitted with a flared, cuffed or bell sleeves typically. The skirt elongates my legs, the fabric is thick enough not to bring my distended belly into the realm of pregnancy rumors and the top fit with unique sleeves bring focal attention to the smallest part of my body, my waist line. I find Kibbe to be interesting, but when it comes to practical application for the every day woman, the rule of thirds is easier to learn and apply without hours of studying and confusion.
