Very talented and hard working woman, but I would love to hear an interview from a successful woman in the fashion industry who didn't come from money and family connections. The fashion industry from the poor and working class perspective is a closed door. To see a different financial class represented in this industry would be extremely refreshing.
@NicLolTorres

i think that happens more often then you'd think, it's just not marketed that way...
@charitycardiasmenos2689

@@NicLolTorres I like your optimism and would love some examples if you have any to share? I'm always searching for those kinds of perspectives. In my research I haven't seen that very often. For example, in the past 2 years of Vogue US covers, they have hired the same set of photographers on repeat. All but one were light skin individuals, majority was male and majority coming from upper middle class to upper class families. For the female photographers that were hired, almost every shoot was done by Annie Leibovitz (5/7 covers). I have yet to delve into the numbers for the creative directors or other team members, but the overall pattern of industry leaders has told a different story. Of course there are plenty of creatives that didn't come from this background and usually the work is quite a bit more exciting in my opinion, but industry leaders are not actively hiring them for these high profile jobs.

@@charitycardiasmenos2689 I would definitely love to have more examples too. The Fashion industry is very classist on its own and I can attest to this because I am a Fashion Designer myself. The only example I could give you would be a few students and seamstresses. Those are the two types of low-income people that most likely make it into fashion.

Thank you because many, many talented fashion degreed people never get a break. They spend years in "internships only to land a job in NYC for a designer paying $35,000 a year." The kids from wealthy parents subsidized their living, hand them connections. They are not more talented or dedicated they just had the road paved for them. There is also a lot of snobbery in fashion. So if you don't come form the right places or gone to the right schools, it's much, much harder.

This was lovely. Listening to her speak about clothes and fashion in general, really made me appreciate fashion more. If you see it as art, or as a feeling you want to convey, or show who you are - I totally understand. Maybe you are passionate about home design, or book club, or cooking. Doing those things makes you feel something special that possibly nothing else makes you feel. This has really opened my eyes to how I present myself to the world. Maybe I'm not showing the best me, even if Im trying to be the best me inside - I should reflect that more in my appearance, because I know when I look my best, I always feel better.

Honestly I'm not sure how relevant this is to someone without the obvious friends/family connections this woman had. While it's impressive in so far as she has a passion and followed that passion, she had a lot of perks/help others not born with her privilege would have. Don't take me wrong, good for her, but also not really seeing her story as your overcome adversity to achieve your dreams story that this video seems to be trying to slant towards . But hey, maybe I just read too much into it?

just giving a thought, idk how rich she was and what connections she had etc. but if someone is really dedicated to fashion etc. i could see them buying a few staple interview clothing items that make an impression, instead of having 20 pairs of jeans. people who dont own luxury designer items and arent rich still tend to own soo much clothing, some people just decide to invest in one item instead of 10 cheaper ones. i personally could have afforded to those items when i was 20, and i come from single parent household where my mom raises two of my sisters with not such a high income. but i worked my own money. just bc i have money at a young age, it doesnt mean my parents gave it to me :)

It’s because Connections DO matter, it may not be fair but it is reality. If you had a business and your two options were the daughter of your long time friend or some college student who you’ve never met, you would be more likely to choose your friend’s daughter too.

Getting an assistant or trainee who's really into the field is quite difficult. It's sad to see that so many young people just want to have a selfie-esque job. But REALLY learning and appreciating the chance to BE THERE and watching and learning not so much.

Okay so... real world translation: A middle/high class, white, woman gets a job through her friends' parents connection at the biggest fashion magazine in the world. Her east coast parents were unpleased by her measly position as a postgrad intern at Lynn Franks in London, so they had her fast passed to Anna Wintour's office at once. Initially she was pretty bummed to be leaving her fun and comfortable job in London (we all know how that is). But, she would soon make history in NYC as an iconic stylist and inspiration to many. Thank you Hollywood Reporter, for showcasing white privilege in the fashion industry. You have made it crystal clear.

This is validation for what I want to pursue. This very interview shines light on fashion in its true form. Fashion is a learned culture that must be respected. It far surpasses a simple love for wearing clothes. Fashion embodies personal identity, color theory, global material sourcing, and a visual narrative.
