So here it is for everyone who missed my streams at twitch, a timelaps from my streaming of the stylized Skull Barrel.
In this particular project I wanted to learn how to use substance painter and also how it can be used with stylization.
Its been super fun streaming and I hope to be able to produce more timelaps videos from future streaming projects.

Hey Aava, I just wondered at which point did you create your UVs ? Watche dhte stream vods and I can't seem to find it

If I remember correctly, I did the uvs when making the retopology/ lowpoly. It was my first stream, so I might have done it off camera as I didn't think anyone would be too interested in watching the uv map process.

I'm just getting into the 3D modeling workflow, do you have any recommendations to become more fluent in these programs? Especially Maya and using Photoshop to hand paint this like you did...

3dcoat or DDO for handpainted , or substance for realistic.
@miraclerem
@miraclerem 5 жыл бұрын
I think Blender is more user friendly than Maya in 3d modeling. And as Peter said youd better use 3dCoat for texturing in handpainted style

Practice, practice, practice! The best and only advise I can give... Maya is the way to go, forget Quixel, learn Substance Designer and Painter, Zbrush is a must too! Good luck!

Hey I'm looking to use either substance painter or quixel for stylised art, do you have any suggestions on which one to go with? Also whats the benefits of you using both? Thanks!
@Aavachan
@Aavachan 5 жыл бұрын
Hey! I would say both works really well. If you want to paint more by hand I would recommend quixel as it's a photoshop plug in, at least for now as you have more control of your brush strokes. Substance painter (imo) is easier to use and have some features that I like more, so if you are new to either program I would recommend substance painter.

combining Quixel and Painter,you use quixel to get the value and color or you generate an ID there? btw how was painting in painter with wacom? i've never tried.
@Aavachan
@Aavachan 5 жыл бұрын
I generated an ID with the help of Xnormal. I added vertex paint in Maya on a decimated version of the highpoly model and baked that to the lowpoly uv. Using a Wacom in Painter works really well :) I always feel I have more control when texturing with a Wacom tablet.

what about the uvs ?! I would like to know how I could obtain nice uvs :p ! Can you explain it to me please ? thx !
@Aavachan
@Aavachan 5 жыл бұрын
That would be like a whole different videos, like an episode of how to make UV's that are optimised, texel density, support lodding, soft and hard edge baking, using multiple UV channels for various shader uses.... maybe I should make one! :D

was it retopo-ed using quad draw after the sculpt? or the maya bit was the overall low poly?
@Aavachan
@Aavachan 5 жыл бұрын
I made a block out in maya to use as a base for sculpt in zbrush. So the maya part in the beginning is purely for zbrush. I made a lowpoly using quad draw and just some normal modelling in maya after the sculpt was done. It's not part of the timelaps since I didn't stream it. My other video with the crossbow however has a retopo part :)
@remon563
@remon563 5 жыл бұрын
thanks for this useful breakdown @Aava chan. I am wondering why you first use Photoshop and Quixel and not do the "blockout" in Substance Painter ? 3DEX (on youtube) might have a useful material that serves really well as a "base" layer to paint upon.

Hey! Thanks :) glad you liked it. This is a compilation from my streams on Twitch. So I used quixel and substance painter to see the differences between the two programs. I have tried a bit of quixel before but not substance painter, so during the stream I decided to try it :) But thanks for the tip! I will check it out.

Amazing!! I'm looking forward to watch ur next stream :D btw, do you prefer Photoshop to paint basic colors, hightlight and shadows than Substance?
@Aavachan
@Aavachan 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! As of current I must say that photoshop has more control for painting in general and blending colours than substance painter. But that might change in the future now since Adobe owns both programs.

Hey! I used music from the KZbin free audio library. I'm not sure about the names of the songs. I basically just downloaded a bunch of them. Sorry that I cant give you a better answer. I recommend browsing through their library tho, there's some nice music in there.

Hi Zeng! :) No I did not, the model I brought into zbrush is not the lowpoly model, it is just a blockout. I made the lowpoly + uv after the highpoly was done. It's just not in this video :)

Truly useful timelapse, thank you for sharing! Do you have a tutorial where I can learn that trick with wood fibers in Substance Painter? It's really awesome!
@Aavachan
@Aavachan 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Unfortunately I don't have a tutorial on that nor have I seen any other. But I only used standard generators in substance painter with various filters. The fiber in the roughness/gloss map is just black and white lines that I fade
