The problem here is Blizzard doesn't do classical "handpainted" anymore - not even WoW. They use zbrush to make the highpoly look stylized bake normals and other maps and use them as masks and other stuff to get this special handpainted look. For a game like WoW the weapon also seems to be pretty highpoly. Besides the blizzard stuff this a great tutorial for learning the old school handpainted technique.

My OBJ export does not have a UV overlay by default, when looking at existing, or creating new diffuse maps. And the diffuse "properties" tab itself is completely blank. I can however, go to the 3D options panel, and create a wireframe painting overlay. Meaning the UV information is indeed there. What am I doing wrong with my export if there's a "right" way to do it?

Great and very informative tutorial. Really appreciate ur effort creating this tutorial.... However, i tried exporting obj file (from blender) into ps CC 2019 and the model become soo bright (cant see it unless i rotate it at certain angle) and i find that ps become laggy/slow when i paint the UV.. I was hoping to use this workflow for live 3d painting because other software like MARI is very expensive. hmmm~
@jasonwang75 жыл бұрын
Hey Adry, you can select the "__PS_3D_Default" layer under your model in the 3D panel and increase the Shine to 100% and change the Specular color to black to make the model look less bright.

When painting, it stops updating live and then acts like two different textures. I've been researching for answers but can't find an answer why its not updating live. Any ideas? Thank you in advance. How do you Cntrl+Z without breaking the update in real time?
@jasonwang74 жыл бұрын
Yea its still a little buggy and I hope Adobe can fix the issue. There seems to be no solutions other than to close and reopen the model and texture. I tend to only rely on the live painting feature during the initial phase. Once the base colours and shadows are set, I will close the 3D model preview and just focus on the texture document.
@zidanridaniiswantoro3 жыл бұрын
hey jason i've quick question for you, are this texture need a normal and specullar map after you make this diffuse ? thank you
@jasonwang73 жыл бұрын
For this style, we usually do not create specular maps and just paint the glossiness directly into the diffuse. Normal maps are optional and dependent on the nature of your project (e.g mobile games typically don't use normal maps).

As this workflow only produces a diffuse map, just save it as a JPG. In Unreal, import in the JPG and link it to the correct node in the material editor (should be either the diffuse or albedo channel)

@holotaice23085 жыл бұрын
Just wanna ask what tool you use to blend the colors together. Every time I paint, the different colors always has this line in the middle.
@jasonwang75 жыл бұрын
I tend to spam the ALT (Eyedropper) key a lot when blending. This samples the new colour that is produced when one colour overlaps with another while using a brush with transfer mode turned on. You can use a soft brush to speed up the process but a hard brush will better fit the Blizzard cartoony art style.
