Creating stylized and handpainted models using the Blender and Substance Painter workflow is one of the most highly requested tutorials we get here on Stylized Station. With a flexible program like Blender, and with handpainting in Substance Painter only beginning to take hold, who actually knows a decent workflow to combine two of these amazing softwares?
Fortunately, Maxence was kind enough to stop by Stylized Station to share the workflow that he used to create his fantastic handpainted project.
While the texturing is done in Substance Painter, the techniques Maxence demonstrates can easily be translated to Blender, so you can use this workflow using 100% free software. Pretty amazing right?
There are a lot of cool tips and tricks packed into this tutorial, so be sure to bookmak this one and use it as a reference for the future.

A great tip i've learned some days ago: You can activate a shortcut in windows 10 for seeing your screen in black and white. Press 🪟Win + U for accessibilty settings, go to color filters and activate the grayscale option. Now you can easily activate the grayscale at anytime! And thanks for the tutorial :)

@Stylized Station do you have any recommendations for stylized modeling ,character, environment courses or videos in general. I recently got one for creating a blizzard style bow on Udemy (my first paid course) there’s a lot of good information to be learned purely from the workflow because it’s the workflow I want to use but the explanation is lackluster to put it nicely . I want to be able to create and understand not follow steps 1-x to Copy the desired model exactly . And of course I watch the videos here and I have been for a while! You’re growing quick! and I want to grow as well (Also if I could make things my own creations I wanted textures I’d be even more inclined to get the coloring book)

Gabriel Quaghebeur I believe I’ve seen what you’re talking about but I have not been doing this long a few months at most and I believe that course is with Z brush and maya. I don’t know if I should be discouraged from looking at tutorials in other software but as I’m still familiarizing myself with blender and barely started substance so I try to stick to just those tutorials in case I don’t understand Perfectly what they’re saying and have to follow along click by click. If this is a bad practice pls let me know I’d love to discuss

@@gavynthomas1 i don't use maya nor blender, i'm on 3dsmax and i can tell that the 3d software you use is not a problem, there are more or les similar :) you juste have to understand the idea of caricatural modelisation and you can do it with watever you whant, at the end you will export it as a FBX object no matter the software you use ^^ For zbrush i recomand you to watch some tuto introduction because it's veryyy different and kind of hard tu use at first sight even if you don't use 1/3 of the software with this workflow Here is a little bit of guidance if need for zbrush : check how import an fbx (you low poly made on 3d software), - how divide the geometry of your object (to increase the amount of polygons of your mesh that allows you to sculpt details) - how to use brushes - and how to export your object (now high poly) as a fbx And voilà :) you can go on substance and bake your high poly made on zbrush in your low poly :)

Gabriel Quaghebeur alright maybe I’ll take a look at more of the end result achieved and not the software used. I’m 4-5 months into learning these types of things 3D art art in general etc. so wrapping my head around a workflow and trying to develop one with the software I have available; blender and substance suite, has been at the front of my mind. On top of that finding content that fits exactly what I have available to me is limiting what I can learn. but maybe I was thinking about it incorrectly. Thank you for the input :)

Very interesting but quality of video itself is average. You have strong accent in English and you have to deal with it. Make video, than write pure script on it then write your voice _over_ with clean, finished sentences. It will allow you to remove all weak takes and unwanted clicks from background. You also could edit and speed up video a bit at this step to make tutorial less time-consuming. It’s not “follow me” kind of tutorial. You don’t have to stay on tempo and wait for students. Everyone could pause/rewind anything. But it’s boring to watch your mouse moving while you’re trying to describe in words what you just did. :)))). Please continue ! Your tutorial is very interesting and knowledge is priceless. Please share more but you have to keep in mind difference between live demo and prepared/polished video overview. Yes, it will take more time to get the result, but you do the same in your art. More time = better result :) Video is not an exception. Don’t stop !

To non EUA people is sooo much better because his accentuated pronounce makes who we from another countries understand much better than a native one speaking, I always search for courses and tutorials who don't have a native teaching.

it's a really great tutorial, thank you for making it! however, your accent is kind of hard to understand and it's hard to follow what you're saying due to you taking a lot of time translating words in your head and repeating the same sentences.. if it was a bit more fluent in English i think it could be better, just as a tip for the future :) (and before someone comes for me, I'm from Europe myself, English is my 3rd language)

Triangles are the bread and butter butter of low poly , stylized art. Only amateurs claim triangles are "not so good". Everything in 3d that gets rendered is triangles. It is just for certain edge flow for deformation that you want to keep a quad based flow. And even then, you can toss in triangles in non deforming arears just fine. All pros do it who know their shit. If you look up viewer models by professionals you might be shocked. Just having some diffuse knowledge grabbed somehwere form the internet does not enable you to judge what is "good" or "not so good". Claims like this immediately expose the knowledge level of a 3d artist. This "tris are bad " mindset is a phenomenon of the internet, where in certain cases, bunch of peaple spread un-proofed miss information in order to feel better than others. Thats it. Triangles are your best friend as a game artist. There are immensely helpful to get higher detailed silhouettes without raising polycount too much. Especially when it comes to art style like this. Yoiu just need to know what you are doing, thats all. Claiming that having some triangles is bad without any proof to support why that is in that certain area, clearly shows that your are not knowing enough, yet. Keep your mind open. It is about artistic skills, not how many triangles a model has. My advice is focus on that instead. This "the bad triangle" myth is so stubborn around the net... it get passed on from gen to gen like some plaque, hurting beginner all around the planet, you can not kill it. It is important to have good edge flow, to have quads only in a final production model, total bogus

@@harrysanders818 As a beginner, I'm glad to have stumbled upon this comment because I somewhat fell for the "no triangles" thing too. It's pretty intimidating to try to retopo something and be so worried about everything being a quad. I have yet to successfully retopo anything very complex because of this myth messing with my mind.

The triangle slander has got to go. Not us being 3D artists and certain shapes being forbidden. Nonsense
