Well, you see, I find it easier to use a mixture of bleach and californium filtered through argon in order to stabilize the frequency of the wave diodes. I would also recommend making switches out of Phillips instead of Flathead screwdrivers.

This can only work if you focus your blue lasers onto a small part of a high velocity liquid jet and recirculate your dye solution, just like in a dye laser. If you don't, you'll get a population buildup in the triplet state of the dye due to intersystem crossing and the comparatively long lifetime of the triplet ground state. Molecules in the triplet state are very detrimental to your fluorescence quantum yield. They no longer contribute to your fluorescence and even worse, they usually absorb at your excitation and/or fluorescence wavelength, thereby preventing or reabsorbing the fluorescence of the other molecules. If that isn't enough, dyes are also more prone to undergo chemical changes (become bleached) when they are in the triplet state. So you have to prevent triplet state buildup by making sure that each volume element of dye is only illuminated very briefly. The molecules that did end up in the triplet state after passing the illuminated spot will all recover to singlet in a couple of ms, so the dye is virtually instananeously ready to be used again on its next trip through the jet and your reservoir doesn't need to be big. If you add a radiator to your circulation system you will get rid of your thermal problems in one go. Required flow speed in the jet depends on a lot of factors, but think in the order of 10 m/s.
@styropyro
@styropyro 8 жыл бұрын
Ah yes this is the kind of reply I was hoping for! I already built a dye circulator with pump and radiator, but had no apparent increase in output. That being said, the beam is being diffused over the whole cell now, and the fluid velocity is not that fast, maybe 1 m/s at best. That is VERY annoying that these triplet states absorb in regions that I don't want them to. :( I wonder what the absorption cross sections are like for given concentrations of singlet and triplet states of fluorescein, because it would make things even worse if the triplet state is more likely to absorb blue light than the singlet state. I think I'll give up on trying pumping a liquid state organic dye with this setup, and instead will look into hitting an efficient solid phosphor surface for generating green light (just like what's found in hybrid DLP projectors)

This is slowly turning into a laser/science channel. I like it! You don't make the usual boring science videos, but instead more "energized" in the way you speak and work with things. You also demonstrate and do "paperwork"/progress (making the stuff) equally. That's much more fun to watch then regular science videos that only do either progress and a short demonstration in the end or only talk about what should and will happen.
@styropyro
@styropyro 8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the kind words! :D This is the direction I'd like to go with my future videos. I like to watch things explode as much as the next guy, but the theory behind these projects is just as cool. My goal is to show that you can use "boring" math and theory to create some really cool stuff!

Use ethylene or propylene glycol as your fluid, fill it nearly full, and seal it off. It already has a boiling point at atmospheric pressure of around 200 C. Sealing it allows any gas to raise the pressure inside your mirror array, which in turn raises the boiling point even further. JB weld or similar may be a better choice for construction with the added pressure. The pH would be pretty neutral but you shouldn't have any problems fixing that.
@Triumvirate888
@Triumvirate888 8 жыл бұрын
That would require building some kind of pressure vessel to contain the fluid, and it is very difficult to build transparent pressure vessels that allow light to pass through, especially of the variety that he is using (with the mirrors which only allow certain colors of light to pass through).
@dtroy15
@dtroy15 8 жыл бұрын
+Triumvirate888 Just adding a few psi will raise the boiling point considerably. The relationship is exponential. The refractors he is using already are fine, they just need to be constructed more sturdily with a high temp epoxy or similar.

I don't think how well a person understands a topic can be attributed to the competence of the professor alone. While a good professor is certainly helpful, all of the math and science demonstrated in this video could be learned from the internet without any professorial input at all. In my experience, it is very common, that self teaching is necessary to understand a topic, regardless of the competence of the professor.

NightMare ZaTT I don't know if he is smarter than me, or the other way around, but I was making the point that the original poster was delegating too much respect to this guy's intelligence. I mean, yes, he's very intelligent, that's obvious. But genius is something completely different, crazy, ambitious, once-in-a-lifetime phenomena. Modeling chemical atom density through a few simple differential equations is certainly difficult, but it doesn't make you a "genius". He's probably never seen a calculus equation in his life. As someone who's been repeatedly called out as a "brainiac" and "math whiz" by nearly everyone in my academic career just because I was a few levels above them in maths and science, I can tell who is being genuine and who is not. I'll believe styro is a "genius" when someone of much higher intellectual standing believes him to be one, because all other opinions on the matter are useless.
@zahrulexe
@zahrulexe 8 жыл бұрын
+Tsorovan M'hael Well, for a brainiac like you,. You gain your knowledge from others. You learned it. Earned it and take controll of it. I'm sure a brainiac can define who is stupid and who is not. I can be a genius and still complimenting styro for his level of knowledge. And you can come to my comment and say I am stupid. You can reply to this guy that he is a stupid. But you are behind the screen of a pc. or a laptop. or a phone perhaps. You may be the one that have much higher level of knowledge in math and science within your friends. You don't know this guy. Just because he was complimenting that guy or else. That doesn't made you smarter because you didn't compliment. I've met a lot of men with the richness of everything. And you may have a higher level of knowledge. But you can't think of a simple thing that the guy that commented "you are a genius" may be smarter than you. When you think you are a step infront of anyone else. Stop thinking. Because you are actually a step behind. I have no hate on you. Because my level of knowledge says I should not hate people that I have never met. But still. Just because you are smarter than your friends at your school whatsoever. That doesn't make you smarter than everybody you called "stupid" on the internet. English is not my first language so I have no intention to type 100% perfect with no grammar errors. I saw someone that is way smarter than me but still, she was humble. If only she is still alive.

I thought this same exact thing when I realized what he was going to do... with a laser that powerful, heat will always be an issue, particularly with an alcohol based solvent. If you were to have say a liter of the stuff constantly being cycled through & cooled, it would be less of a problem. Given how quickly it boiled though, I don't know if this will be enough on it's own. Maybe adding some active coolers to the sides of the mirrors?

Interesting concept, but your experiment was flawed from the jump. You cross-contaminated your 'samples' to determine which ph level solution would work best- as well as washed most of your solution off in the first sample.
@styropyro

That was just a demonstration for my viewers. What you didn't see is the hours I spent searching through spectra in different solvent systems, as well as the math behind brightness. I downloaded various fluorescence emission spectra in csv format, along with the 1988 luminosity function, and then hit them with calculus to find what my best bet was.

+styropyro I have some questions. How much pressure do you think those mirrors can take? What if you put fluorescence gas in that container to begin with(assuming you could maintain fluorescence as a gas)? Is there going to be attempt #2 soon?
@TheMeterTube
@TheMeterTube 8 жыл бұрын
+styropyro Gotcha. Thank you for the response. I wondered if that was just for show, as most of your explanations have been pretty in-depth. But it just seemed too rushed to be accurate. Carry on, sir. :)
@TheMeterTube
@TheMeterTube 8 жыл бұрын
+Ankush Girotra It wasn't about the effect it would have on the PH, it would be more to the point of effecting the luminosity. The amount of the sample wouldn't be even and the PH's would also be skewed on top of that.

The mirrors have already cracked under these conditions...luckily I bought a pile of very cheap dichros and other optics a while ago. I doubt I'll go through the trouble of making a high pressure cell for this project, but if I were to I'd keep the dichros on the outside so they don't have to be in the crazy cell conditions. Fluorescein in the gas phase is a very poor fluorescence agent, so I'd use a different compound if I wanted to do gas phase stuff.

It's all about the relationships we make. In trying to maximize luminescence theoretically you run into a practical barrier. You are going to have to cool the stuff to keep it from boiling but it looks like you are on the bleeding edge of your manufacturing capability. I hope you haven't stopped saving up for your secret lab. Every mad scientist has to have one.

Those 445nm lasers come out of the Casio XJ-A145 model projector, which uses a light engine that includes conversion of the blue 445nm laser light to green light for the green component of the RGB output. The green is produced by passing the blue laser beam through a spinning disc that is half covered in a material that flouresces green as it absorbs the blue laserlight. Perhaps it would be interesting to investigate that material (as it works VERY well) for you purpose.

Hey styropyro, not sure if you leave the notifications on for your videos, but I wanted to speculate on possible workarounds for your boiling problem. Higher boiling solvents might work, but they would likely change the emission properties as well as increase the health and safety hazards associated with the device. Also, it likely wouldn't take long for the energy to build up in the cell to reach boiling temperature for other solvents. What if you kept ethanol, but attached a simple reflux condenser system to the cell with a chilled water/ethylene glycol solution? Your solution could be left to boil (leaving room in the cell so it doesn't splash out/expand and destroy the glass) and the vapors can be condensed and dripped back into the vile through a separate syringe. Kind of a messy workaround, though it would be cool to see a condenser on a flashlight! Maybe you'll find an alternative solution through your physical/mathematical research. I'm interested to see where it goes.
