I've got a mini penlight 365nm led pen, but that is a led! Only confusing thing maybe; it has a class 2 radiation rating warning! So it is somehow similarly classed as a laser. It also has an extra cap. I guess it has to do with these leds being point lights, very bright and being uv. Has a nice colour btw.

Even visible high power LEDs (torches) have very of Class 1 or 2 radiation warnings. And before here were standards for LEDs they were often classified as "Class 1 Laser" :-) Yes, it's probably a question of brilliance or how much it resembles a point source.

7:35 This might not be a mystery anymore, but incidentally I just learned about this in a course I'm taking for a radiography program. Initially, the UV laser stimulates electrons in the phosphor material (europium-doped strontium aluminate?). Like you noted, this causes initial fluorescence (electrons in excited states quickly transitioning down to ground states and emitting light) followed by phosphorescence (electrons in *metastable* excited states slowly transitioning down to ground states and emitting light). When the red laser is shone on the phosphorescing areas, the red light selectively re-stimulates the electrons in metastable excited states, allowing them to quickly transition back down to their ground states and emit light in the process, similar to regular fluorescence. Accelerating the aggregate metastable-to-ground electronic transitions in the phosphor accelerates both the phosphorescence and the quenching of said phosphorescence. Notice that while the red laser does not cause any phosphorescence in areas where it isn't already occurring, it does momentarily brighten the phosphorescence where it is already occurring. This phenomenon is exploited in computed radiography, exchanging soft UV for hard x-rays, loose Eu:SrAl2O4 for Eu:BaIF/Eu:BaBrF suspended in a plastic/resin matrix, and a red laser pointer for an infrared laser scanner.

There’s a book I read a while back, I think it was The Organized Mind by Daniel Levitin. The idea was that if you’re on the same level as someone you’ll feel competitive, if they’re a little bit better than you, you may also feel competitive. If they’re another level than that better, then you may admire them, and if they’re a level beyond that, you may not even recognize what they’re doing. From the perspective of the person who is really high up, they can see where you’re at. It’s like the college professor who did their thesis on the topic that you’re learning in class. If you try to fudge the numbers or make anything up they will know, they may not say anything but they will know. In other words, by saying this guy is the smartest KZbinr, you are betraying where you are at. Unless, of course, that’s not what you meant

Before you criticize a joke in the future that apparently other people were knowledgeable to get, I suggest you do some research. I just got my very first lazer so I'm pretty happy about that. Tomorrow I get my protective Goggles so I can start using it. The battery that came with it is just half the power the Lazer is designed for. It's supposed to take 2 16340 batteries for a total of 7.4 volts. The long battery it came with is just 3.7 volts. So it is very bright green now, I doubt it will burn anything till I buy the new batteries for it. But I will still get to enjoy checking it out at half power when my Goggles get here and next month I'll by the batteries it needs for full power. Its that gatling gun looking one, so I'm guessing it will be 1 watt or so when full power since it seems very bright already even pointed at the black foam padding in its case. I plan to buy a blue one and a red one to later. This green one was only $22 dollars, though the right batteries will up the price. But I can use them in all of them. These aren't the real crazy powerful ones you make. But I don't think I'll ever want anything bigger than these. They'd just be to dangerous for me to want to mess with. I would really like to buy some Goggles that would protect me from the red, blue and green lazers that go over top my glasses. But I haven't done a ton of research into finding some yet. Great video as usual, wow. 😲👍

Ultraviolet is by far my most favourite colour. Ironically because I am one of the few people who can actually see ultraviolet for it's true brilliance. I was born with cataracts and my lenses were removed at three months old. This has had the effect of removing my eye's natural ability to filter out the UV rays. When I look at UV based lights such as counterfeit note lights or disco UV lights, they are extremely bright to me. I can't even look at sun beds because they are very dangerous to my eyes. But I bet the laser pointer reflecting off surfaces would be bright also.

"Really close to a grey colour" This is due to the fact humans DO have UV reception, although its blocked by the lens of the eye and i presume due to you still being quite young, you can still see a fragment of UV down to atleast 360 NM :) it activates all of your colour receptors due to its high energy, but blue a little more, thus your perception of a blurry, grey dot. -I've seen the UV world from 310-370NM with a UV bandpass filter due to the lenses of my eyes not blocking out UV very well :D

@@bobbcraig2657 You know whats really cool and even more cancer causing? An high powered Uv-Bulb with a normal bulb socket. You can screw it into you ceiling light and bask in pure cancer rays. It also causes the oxygen in the room to transform into ozone and also flashboils your upper skin layers everywhere, causing very irritating skin conditions and sunburn after short exposure. And the best part is where it reacts with the cornea and blinds you in a very painful way for some time.

You may try using it on ice or sugar cooled to LN2 temperatures, both of which are strongly phosphorescent. The red laser negative image effect is just low energy photons pushing the phosphor molecules out of the metastable state by giving the "suck" excited electrons enough energy to overcome the "activation energy" of their forbidden spin transitions. It's the same effect as used in those orange ir laser viewer cards. Also, you are extremely handsome dude

If you are wondering if this laser is eye safe or not, it is. Even though he did say that it has an output of 36Mw which is usually dangerous for a visible or IR laser, UV is actually blocked by the lenses and corneas in your eyes so with UV up to about probably 50 to 60Mw you can take of your laser goggles. He can see the laser output because your retina actually has the ability to do so but the light is usually blocked by the lenses and corneas in your eyes but they clearly are not doing a perfect job because he can see it just a bit. Now we are basically the only animals that have lenses that block UV so him using it around his cat may not have been the best idea.

7:42 I think the fluorescent surface is actually lasing. I mean it has excited states (from the UV) that are bleeding off light slowly and randomly but when you put a laser through them they bleed off quickly, does that not make sense? I think that surface could be used as a dye laser if that's the case.
@segarza6 жыл бұрын

Hi Drake, I'm sure you've figured it out by now, but the reason the red laser point erases the light coming from the phosphorescent material is because it supplies enough energy to assist the electron decay from the excited state in the triplet manifold (which is where the electron gets stuck after decaying from its excitation to the singlet manifold). This transition is a "spin-forbidden" transition which makes it improbable, and is why phosphorescent lifetimes are so much longer than fluorescent ones. The final decay typically requires the energy of the electrons orbital momentum. But hitting it with a low energy red promotes this decay without exciting it back up the the singlet manifold. I think what I've got above should give you enough buzz-words to work out the reason on your own because I'm sure I wasn't clear enough.
