This song grew out of the great "industrial bomb" that really hurt Chicago's south side in the late 70's and early 80's. There were three steel mills in the south side (Wisconsin Steel, Republic Steel, and U.S. Steel), now they're all open fields. There were also food processing plants for General Mills cereals, and Jay's potato chips. They're abandoned too. WTH!
@timepoet778 жыл бұрын
I grew up during the 70s, and I can sympathize with your assessment of the "industrial bomb" you mentioned. Not only was Chicago affected, but a lot of other cities as well, especially here in my hometown of Pittsburgh. You mentioned U.S. Steel in the observational comment; Pittsburgh was the headquarters of the company as well as a lot of other steel firms, and for decades we were the only city to produce steel with high quality until the cheaper imports came in. Plus with the new emphasis on environmental concerns and emissions regulations, our steel mills dwindled to almost nothing.
@diceytrust27687 жыл бұрын
Thomas R. Skidmore Baltimore, also a big steel industry at that point, was destroyed during the late 70's under the disastrous Carter administration. The Bethlehem Steel company layed off nearly everybody back then. Although it didn't really shut down until the late 90's.
@BlueButterfly77776 жыл бұрын
Scott Davis I love when commenters like you and the other two people in this thread explain the cultural things going on when a song was written. Great knowledge ya'll pass on.
@fligemon6 жыл бұрын
POTUS Trump wants steel back; he is right. All purchases for steel by the Federal Government need to go to US producers. If a DoD contract is cost plus fixed fee it can support higher costs from US mills.
@BlueButterfly77776 жыл бұрын
