Lyrically, this is a song with an extremely powerful message that transcends generations. Musically, it stands out as a rock masterpiece that nobody talks about. "Pieces of Eight" - both the track and its titular album - is a textbook example of what made Styx so much more special than most casual listeners may think.

Not quite right! Styx have always been on my horizon, I've got a lot of their records and even saw them live in Munich in the 90ies. And Germany is still Europe, isn't it? But I see what you mean. They should have been huge in Europe, but they were very rarely on tour here.

If you love Styx, you like Dennis. This is established over and over. Fact is Laurence sings it as good or better, and has the exact same pitch and inflection as Dennis. Plus LG has been in the band 25 years now without leaving. And he is a way better pianist and keyboardist than Dennis ever was or will be.

Gowan's voice in no way comes close to that of Dennis DeYoungs ,but, then again who does. My point Dennis is Styx, he wrote most of the Big hits and his creative genius is in a league of its own.

To the many Gowan haters that are always around Styx videos featuring Lawrence Gowan: If Styx couldn't have secured his services, they probably should have stopped the band, as there are so many great songs originally sung by Dennis DeYoung who wrote so much great music. Without these songs, Styx would only have been half as good. While Lawrence Gowan cannot be a 100% clone of Dennis, that much is clear, he's gone such a long way with Styx now, doing the best he can, which is quite a lot. He deserves respect.

My organ donor saved eight lives on December 7th, 2011 after she had been murdered on December 6th, 2011. I wonder of those eight individuals she save how many of us are still alive? She was declared legally dead, but in each of us still alive a piece of her is alive, in my body her left kidney survives and her family wanted to make meaning out of her tragic loss and she was only 19 when her life was taken from her. I have survived more than ten years with her organ in my body, she has filtered more than 330 tons of my poisoned blood... with her left kidney and she is the best friend of my life. All I am for her is a living tomb, epitaph and Emery stone. Pieces of Eight... I have a real silver piece of eight not cut into eight pieces... each piece if cut would be worth 20 dollars U.S. I am related to Admiral Sir Henry John Morgan on my mother's side of the family... my organ donor's first name was Morgan and that is so bizarre... thanks STYX for this song... I wish all of you the best... song reminds me of the price paid for my life in eight pieces and it was not silver... it was paid for in tons of blood... all red... all my love and prayers for the family of my donor, her father's only daughter and she was a ballet,lyrical and jazz dancer from age three to age nineteen... this is her in the first video I saw of her and I lost it when I first saw this video in 2014 after I signed legal documents to have contact with her father... an amazing lady... cut to pieces after she was murdered to save lives... she was killed by a drunk doctor in a car wreck and it caused a blood clot to her brain... she was number 7 in the competition and saved my life on December 7th, 2011... all of those things are so bizarre to me... se7en is the number of completion in ancient writing... all of the events have been strange to me for the past ten years... thanks STYX for this one song... my donor and the first video of her I ever saw of her... kzbin.info/www/bejne/qGeqeoKla8x1fa8

To keep the record straight, the tour was not originally called the "Pieces of Eight" tour. For some reason it was called The Main Event Tour. I guess someone figured that "The Main Event" was going to be the big hit off the album, which it wasn't. The tour program featured a boxer on the front., and I have a couple of them somewhere. Now, a great story. (Well, at least I think so.) We were in rehearsals in Hammond In. , and I was the new guy on the crew. Now you have to keep in mind that Styx was, and probably always will be my favorite band of all time. It was my first day, and to my knowledge the band hadn't been in yet, and had, to my understanding, not even seen each other since they had recorded Pieces of Eight 6 months before. No when you record something with strong harmonies, there are 3 ways to do it. All at the same time in separate rooms, all in the same room at the same time, or laying down individual tracks when you can get some in the studio I had listened to Pieces of Eight extensively before I got the call, so needless to say, I was stoked when it came. I had turned down jobs with The Police, and Supertramp waiting for this call, and if it hadn't happened, I would have been devastated. Anyway, back to the story. The guys came rolling in one or two at a time in the morning. We ended up waiting for Tommy to arrive when all of a sudden we hear tires screeching and a jeep door slamming. In walks Tommy with a shit eating grin on his face saying something about the Indiana State Patrol, and laughing. I never did get the whole story. ANYWAY......when time came for the band to do their mic check, and they had each tested theirs individually, they needed to sing something together. I'll be damned if someone didn't count it off, and they did the chorus to Pieces of Eight DEAD NUT ON like they had been playing it for days. From that moment on, these guys walked on water as far as I was concerned I ended up not staying with them very long for personal reasons, but for a young rock and roll roadie out of Seattle, I was in heaven at least for a little while.
@markharrison5321
@markharrison5321 5 жыл бұрын
That is a great story. I read the Eagles used to warm up their harmony singing Seven Bridges Road in the dressing room, and regularly sang it as part of their mic checks. The response from their road crew eventually led them to actually perform it live in front of an audience, record it on a live album, and release it as a single.

Haha, I made a promise to myself this April to try and not focus so heavily on Gowan this time! Because I love watching the others play and be in their element, too! ((I'm totally looking forward to some of the heart-warming JY + Tommy BFF interactions)). Am I the only person whose heart utterly melts in complete awe over seeing those two shoulder-to-shoulder, dancing, goofing off or exchanging significant glances or making one another laugh whilst performing? I am here...now. 1st comment...FIRST COMMENT? IN FOUR FUK'IN YEARS???~ in 4 fucking years? Any clues why??????~ Pretended to clone another prison planet, for the power that thinks it be. When I auditioned for this gig, as far back as the song goes back... some 46 yrs. going downtown Chicago, for my appt. with a USMC recruiter/camera rolling. This was after about 3 yrs. taking Tae Kwon Do lessons, from my teacher/master Mr. Young R Cho. He was 7th or 8th degree. He said more than once...I was his best student. I would later joke, I was his best paying student...always on time! ~ Time is, as they tried, to brainwash us...money? When the USMC saw my demo audition, they determined I was not fit for their service. More like Special Forces, Secret Service, Space Force...POTUS? No and no. Been their dun dat! Actually, 7th and 8th grade class, consecutive terms. 1974, 75? When Nixon was impeached and had to leave office...so did I have to... I was impeached by my classmates...LOL. @ that time stamp I had no clues available about the properties or possibilities of water and gates. ~

Saw them in 1999 at Lulu's in Kitchener as one of my birthday presents that year. Always a good show. I far prefer Gowan with them as DDY was too controlling - everything had to be his way. I guess Dennis' break from Styx is pretty underrated because both Styx and DDY both continue to do well on their own. Saw Styx live in 07. They opened for Def Leppard, and as much as I love Def Leppard, Styx was by far the better show, even as an opener. I hope to catch Dennis in concert sometime soon also. And who knows, maybe someday they can reunite long enough for a few shows... :)

I'm the opposite. I saw Dennis DeYoung in 2004, and have yet to see Styx.

I've seen Styx since DDY's been gone also, and they're phenomenal. Lots of energy on stage. Everyone shows appreciation for the other band members. Love Gowan's craziness, he's a lot of fun to watch.

I thought he same thing AF, STYX stole the show as far as I was concerned. I think the only reunion will be at their RaRHoF induction.

I saw them with Def Leppard as well. Styx blew them out of the water. My friends came to see Def Leppard they left the arena Styx fans. The most important part of the band for Def Leppard is at the sound board filling in vocals and guitar parts. Most of their show is in the can. Styx sings and plays everything. Always a great show.

Saw DDY solo and sounds great maybe even better then with Styx,like a fine wine gets better with age and personally not a fan of Gowan,can't hit the high notes which makes the songs.

I'm sure it's easier for the musicians and the roadies, but I miss the days of seeing banks of keyboards and synthesizers around the keyboard player.

I like this version better than the one on the original album. I do get what some of the Gowan haters say about his voice not being great for some of Dennis DeYoung's songs, but on this one it is equally good or even better. I am really happy that the current lineup resurrected this song as part of the Grand Illusion/Pieces of Eight tour. I think it is one of the more meaningful songs they ever did.

What a shame the band decides to play Pieces of Eight AFTER they fire the man who wrote it..but refused to play it while Dennis was in the band. That said-Larry Gowan does a fine job-he has a great voice as well.

I know for a fact that they would have preferred to play this song over "Babe" or "Mr. Roboto". They lost fans because of the soft rock and theatrics.

They did this for the "Grand Illusion/Pieces of Eight" tour, in which they played ALL of the songs from both albums to celebrate their biggest records. That's why they dug this up, and some other hidden gems as well.

I remember reading the Rolling Stone review of this album, specifically this song. I couldn't but help say, did they hear the same album? They ripped this song like crazy saying they were making a big deal about how rich they were. I didn't see that at all.

There's an old saying The Show Must Go On it's troubling when band members part ways Specially in the founding member but I must say this band got me through some troubling times in life with their music Tommy and James was a big inspiration in my guitar playing as it is Lawrence has earned my respect thank you Styx for keeping the music alive ;)

Every time I think of Styx, I am reminded of the movie Phantasm, and the flying steel ball. Great sound track, messed up movie. It was the early 80's. These guys were awesome! Still are.
