Lyrically, this is a song with an extremely powerful message that transcends generations. Musically, it stands out as a rock masterpiece that nobody talks about. "Pieces of Eight" - both the track and its titular album - is a textbook example of what made Styx so much more special than most casual listeners may think.

If you love Styx, you like Dennis. This is established over and over. Fact is Laurence sings it as good or better, and has the exact same pitch and inflection as Dennis. Plus LG has been in the band 25 years now without leaving. And he is a way better pianist and keyboardist than Dennis ever was or will be.

Gowan's voice in no way comes close to that of Dennis DeYoungs ,but, then again who does. My point Dennis is Styx, he wrote most of the Big hits and his creative genius is in a league of its own.

To the many Gowan haters that are always around Styx videos featuring Lawrence Gowan: If Styx couldn't have secured his services, they probably should have stopped the band, as there are so many great songs originally sung by Dennis DeYoung who wrote so much great music. Without these songs, Styx would only have been half as good. While Lawrence Gowan cannot be a 100% clone of Dennis, that much is clear, he's gone such a long way with Styx now, doing the best he can, which is quite a lot. He deserves respect.

My organ donor saved eight lives on December 7th, 2011 after she had been murdered on December 6th, 2011. I wonder of those eight individuals she save how many of us are still alive? She was declared legally dead, but in each of us still alive a piece of her is alive, in my body her left kidney survives and her family wanted to make meaning out of her tragic loss and she was only 19 when her life was taken from her. I have survived more than ten years with her organ in my body, she has filtered more than 330 tons of my poisoned blood... with her left kidney and she is the best friend of my life. All I am for her is a living tomb, epitaph and Emery stone. Pieces of Eight... I have a real silver piece of eight not cut into eight pieces... each piece if cut would be worth 20 dollars U.S. I am related to Admiral Sir Henry John Morgan on my mother's side of the family... my organ donor's first name was Morgan and that is so bizarre... thanks STYX for this song... I wish all of you the best... song reminds me of the price paid for my life in eight pieces and it was not silver... it was paid for in tons of blood... all red... all my love and prayers for the family of my donor, her father's only daughter and she was a ballet,lyrical and jazz dancer from age three to age nineteen... this is her in the first video I saw of her and I lost it when I first saw this video in 2014 after I signed legal documents to have contact with her father... an amazing lady... cut to pieces after she was murdered to save lives... she was killed by a drunk doctor in a car wreck and it caused a blood clot to her brain... she was number 7 in the competition and saved my life on December 7th, 2011... all of those things are so bizarre to me... se7en is the number of completion in ancient writing... all of the events have been strange to me for the past ten years... thanks STYX for this one song... my donor and the first video of her I ever saw of her... kzbin.info/www/bejne/qGeqeoKla8x1fa8

To keep the record straight, the tour was not originally called the "Pieces of Eight" tour. For some reason it was called The Main Event Tour. I guess someone figured that "The Main Event" was going to be the big hit off the album, which it wasn't. The tour program featured a boxer on the front., and I have a couple of them somewhere. Now, a great story. (Well, at least I think so.) We were in rehearsals in Hammond In. , and I was the new guy on the crew. Now you have to keep in mind that Styx was, and probably always will be my favorite band of all time. It was my first day, and to my knowledge the band hadn't been in yet, and had, to my understanding, not even seen each other since they had recorded Pieces of Eight 6 months before. No when you record something with strong harmonies, there are 3 ways to do it. All at the same time in separate rooms, all in the same room at the same time, or laying down individual tracks when you can get some in the studio I had listened to Pieces of Eight extensively before I got the call, so needless to say, I was stoked when it came. I had turned down jobs with The Police, and Supertramp waiting for this call, and if it hadn't happened, I would have been devastated. Anyway, back to the story. The guys came rolling in one or two at a time in the morning. We ended up waiting for Tommy to arrive when all of a sudden we hear tires screeching and a jeep door slamming. In walks Tommy with a shit eating grin on his face saying something about the Indiana State Patrol, and laughing. I never did get the whole story. ANYWAY......when time came for the band to do their mic check, and they had each tested theirs individually, they needed to sing something together. I'll be damned if someone didn't count it off, and they did the chorus to Pieces of Eight DEAD NUT ON like they had been playing it for days. From that moment on, these guys walked on water as far as I was concerned I ended up not staying with them very long for personal reasons, but for a young rock and roll roadie out of Seattle, I was in heaven at least for a little while.
@markharrison53215 жыл бұрын
That is a great story. I read the Eagles used to warm up their harmony singing Seven Bridges Road in the dressing room, and regularly sang it as part of their mic checks. The response from their road crew eventually led them to actually perform it live in front of an audience, record it on a live album, and release it as a single.

Every time I think of Styx, I am reminded of the movie Phantasm, and the flying steel ball. Great sound track, messed up movie. It was the early 80's. These guys were awesome! Still are.

Sharry Bucholz Saw them this past December here in El Paso. These guys can put on a show. Always loved their music and watching them live is by far the best concert I’ve been to so far. I really hope you enjoy the show!

To this day these guys are one of the strongest and tightest rock bands; vocally and musically. They're incredible and they're truly built for live performance.. KEEP IT UP GENTLEMEN.. Thank You............!!
