You DDY people just can't accept the fact that these guys are enjoying what they're doing because there's no control freak demanding things his way. Believe me, STYS IS OK w/out Dennis. He's doing what he wants to do and they don't have to play Babe, Don't Let it End or Show Me the Way...all great tracks, but I don't want to go to a Styx show for an 8th grade slow dance. I want rock and roll!

Across half a century, what has made this band special, and unique; has been the mixture of personalities and experiences creating the shows. Showtime, Hendrix, Beatles, southern Rock, rock ballads, musical short stories that make on feel like they walked into the middle of a show. Not just one person, not just one era. All of them influencing the current members now playing in the band.

The hardest working band anywhere then and today... The only loyal to idea to rock and roll kept the band Styx rockin despite being booed off stages performing DDY ideas of rock n roll during Mr. Roboto. Only one can say his voice is in every Styx Song recorded. JY what a performer and his values shared by his friend and fellow Rocker Tommy Shaw keep the show going. Even when all you complaining who is what n where. Cause they know you couldn't dream of having the talent to pick up a guitar let alone play it masterfully like they do.

What's your problem? Trying to troll a fight about this? Lol. Look up the history. Dennis DeYoung songs charted higher then Tommy Shaw's song or JY. Look it up. I don't base it on a "number one hit alone) I base it on alot of other factors... You do know this song you are commenting on the one they are singing? Is a song that DENNIS wrote right? LOL...If you like hearing a man that sounds like a mouse sing..FINE that's you..but I prefer Dennis. They are a good cover band now at best. Of their former selves. I have seen them many times. That is my personal opinion and I have the right to it. Dennis is much better without them then they are without him.

I know Styx' history. And I'm not saying I don't like anything Dennis did. But all those syrupy ballads and show tunes were too much. I haven't liked anything he's done since "Paradise Theatre". I didn't really like his "Cornerstone" material. The last CD (Brave New World), he did with Styx, most of it was some of the worst material he's ever done. And just because you don't agree with my opinion, doesn't mean that I don't have the right to make it either. Getting all upset over nothing. Dennis is washed up musically. All he ever does now are his old boring ballads, and show tunes. And if Lawrence is so terrible, how come Styx still sells out concerts? Even though they've been touring every year since 1999? What you don't realize is that Tommy & JY are just as popular and Dennis was replaceable after all.
@Lancerlady
@Lancerlady 7 жыл бұрын
Still here you are trying to force your opinion as the ultimate. LOL. Whatever lady. "His" Cornerstone material? You say you know the history of the band? DDY who? Gowan is awesome he definitely earned his place in Styx, he sings great but he plays the keyboards like a mad man then turn around and play like a classical pianist while he sings a Freddie Mercury song that gets the whole place singing with him. Tommy is writing great stuff and the whole band are some of the best in the businesses check their resumes and it will blow your mind the talent. Just caught them in Greenville April 7th it was awesome and their sound was dead on great job sound techs.
@65metal
@65metal 4 жыл бұрын
OK here it is, the ultimate DDY-Gowan solution. Styx should take a page from Foreigner's book, have the main tour with the main guys, and at certain venues do an extended set with DDY making guest appearances on certain songs with Gowan playing a supporting role during these songs. From my seat it worked great for Lou and Kelly in Foreigner, and the sold out crowd went nuts. Its a win-win. The younger guys can play every night it they want, and DDY gets to go on stage only when he wants, and the fans get to witness the entire evolution of the band.

Because Tommy and JY want nothing to do with Dennis. That is pretty much the end of any discussion. Nothing indicates that will change. They were touring and doing quite well with Gowan. Thus nothing will change.

Two different bands with unique situations. Lou Gramm never tried to sue his former band mates the way Dennis did. That ridiculous lawsuit DDY tried, is probably a major reason why TS & JY don't want to work with DeYoung again. And I can't say I blame them...

It's so crazy to have all these discussions about DeYoung vs. Gowan. This is Styx. JY + Shaw is more Styx that Dennis alone. JY and Tommy have surrounded themselves with great muscians that may ultimately be together longer than any other lineup. I saw Styx in 83 and loved them. This lineup, in my opinion is better. I have seen enough of DeYoung's Music of Styx on KZbin that I will probably never go out of way to see him.

I think Tommy and JY, as well as Dennis owe it's fans that much. And if they labeled it a farewell tour, they could probably sell out the stadiums like they did in the 70's.

Gowan is a keyboard wizard. If you don't recognize that you know zero about playing keyboards. And he is a very good vocalist. Have you heard the albums he cut of his own material? He was a major star in Canada before this gig. There are like ten solo albums of live and studio material. And they do not sound much like Styx. But this is his job now and he is damn good at it. Dennis DeYoung was and is still a remarkable player and singer. He deserves every bit of credit for his contributions to this band. And Gowan does not hesitate to give him props. This crap about who is better is exactly that. A waste of human energy. Tommy and JY can get along with Gowan, they can't get along with Dennis.This is Styx, for better for worse, that's not going to change. They are still one of the tightest bands around. If you don't like it, go see Dennis's band with his Tommy lookalike and second keyboardist. They are quite good. Dennis is a showman and always puts on a great show.

@Durian Durian Top level musicians respect each other regardless of spoken words. He certainly talks of loving the music. He clearly doesn't want to piss off Tommy and JY by discussing Dennis directly. They seriously do not like Dennis. Just as you have it in for Gowan. I suspect they have better reasons for their dislike than you.

@Durian Durian yea sure, a hired hand for 20 years. He obviously doesn't get royalties from Tommy and JY's songs. Somehow I don't think they will be replacing him anytime soon, if these bands ever get back on the road. Give the hate a rest, too much of it in this world today.

This song is so good you'd have to be a truly awful singer to ruin it. Lawrence Gowan isn't doing anything special with it, and is definitely inferior to Dennis DeYoung, but it's still great to hear it dusted off and played live.

Tommy should have gone solo. He does have talent at singing. Not much at putting together a band.

Tommy did have a solo career in the 80s after he left Styx, but it wasn't hugely successful. He's had more success as a member of a band (Styx, Damn Yankees).
