They say safety; I don't understand why a sub 250g drone 'with a camera' is unsafe whereas a sub 250g drone 'without a camera' can fly freely !!! Is this really just a security/privacy issue. What about anybody, ground based, with a camera and a zoom lens ( the same issue);; read paparazzi !!

Yes I agree crazy but that's the world we live in what gets me is some people with door bell cameras who accuse anyone standing outside the property for more than 30 seconds of being a potential burglar and post images on local neighbourhood social media.

Why sub 250g? With no reason or scientific evidence the US rule appears to be an arbitrary number.

It has nothing to do with safety and everything to do with legislating the hobby out of existence so that the air is made clear for all the commercial drone operators who have deep pockets and lobby and bribe their way to get what they want. The hobby has no place in the skies according to the commercial operators. Things will only get worse.

CAA should look at all the other aviators for a few years and level the safest form of aviation in peace. This obsession of these bureaucrats really is extreme harassment of harmless people perusing a harmless pastime.

A lot of it seems to come from the Gatwick incident. Which turned out to be a mass panic event rather than anything real. I don't have a drone but I've thought about getting into it, the constantly shifting regulations have put me off, even if they're not to bad this time round you know they'll come back in a few years and add more restrictions.

For the entire 46 years I’ve had anything to do with the CAA they have never, ever impressed me. They employ numpties, are slow, cumbersome, work in a totally opaque fashion add very little, if anything, by way of safety to aviation. Furthermore, they just can’t stop interfering and meddling. Medicals are a good example. Cut off dates, renewals dates, revalidations, validity periods, acceptable conditions all change on a rapid basis so that it is difficult to remain legal. They use the excuse of “safety” for everything they do but do not think their way through anything. Legislation and rules regarding drones/UAVs/model aircraft are another example. They have the naive belief that their meddling will make the skies safer. As if. Worse, not only they unaccountable but they hide behind the their cloak of “superiority” and “expertise” when it comes to anyone questioning their existence. A classic example was at a meeting in Europe discussing runway performance (airliner Perf. A stuff). The gimboid sent by the CAA didn’t have a clue about any of the terms - but he was in charge of legislation and oversight in this area. The lunatics are truly in charge of the Campaign Against Aviation.

I like to think that having dealt with a lot of people in my time I have a kind of 'feel' for how people are and having seen some of the various UKCAA interviews over model, drone and UAS regulation I think you're dead on. They simultaneously seem to be totally sure of themselves whilst also impervious to any outside reasoning. The closest I've come to that in real life has been when dealing local councilors, such as the ones who tried to get a small animal sanctuary removed from farmland because they were keeping...farm animals. It's the same "I've been elected / appointed so I know what's best" attitude. And just like what happened with the sanctuary I suspect this won't end well either, although in this case not for us.

I had a few drones back in the day. Long gone now. This was for various reasons. The main one being that Joe Public seems obsessed that drone pilots are spying on them. Every other flight, I was hassled. This is hilarious considering that in the UK we have a massive surveillance society. CCTV cameras everywhere, private, commercial, and government. The second reason for my selling my gear is government interference and over regulation. I was considering getting a mini 3, but it seems like nothing much has changed. The other day I was watching some local kids flying a drone.(Phantom 3 I think) I asked them if they were flying legally. The had no idea of any of the laws and regulations. I explained as diplomatically as possible that they could get into trouble with the police. They found that hilariously funny.. 😏

There are a few people asking about whether the DJI Mini 2 has RemoteID 'baked in'. I have seen a lot of similar questions on the DJI Forums from people in the USA who, if they use their Mini 2 for commercial purposes are already required to have RID from Sept '23. I also have a mini 2 and would like to know the answer. Apparently, Mini 2's in Japan are enabled for RID but no-one from DJI has confirmed whether the Japanese model is different at a hardware level or whether ALL Mini 2's globally are the same and it just needs a firmware upgrade? @Geeksvana - any chance you could find out please and put a lot of Mini 2 users minds at rest. Thx in advance.

I've always had the Operator AND Flyer ID for my Mini 2 from Day 1 as it was the sensible thing to do. I have a pair of Strobon Cree units for night flying which keeps me just within the sub 250g weight limit, but adding remote ID hardware to that equation will therefore put me up a class by complying with all of the rules at night.

As I’ve said previously I don’t mind the flyer ID bit for sub-250, that should never have been an exemption but putting Remote ID onto drones that weigh less than 100grams simply because “they have a camera” is about as out of touch and dumb as it gets, it’s even worse than America where they don’t even have to do that. I think for many this will be the straw that breaks the camels back, our club has, since registration came in, already seen a significant decline in membership numbers, and I only see it getting worse, either it will kill the hobby or, more likely, it’ll just lead to mass disobedience and the only people following the rules, will be those who already do so - aka club members - when Toffy John isn’t required to even have a flight plan or transponder on his Cessna while flying across the country yet I’m required to have a transponder on my frigging 25 gram Tinywhoop, something is beyond wrong.

I do think that the CAA needs a way to specifically address new and novice pilots in the regulations since they are going to be the most accident-prone. But it would be a mistake if they used the sub-250g category for that purpose since many experienced pilots choose to fly a sub-250g drone. Basically, they need a "Learner Pilot" category so that they can frame appropriate, lighter touch regulations for experienced pilots while being tougher on novices. Maybe there's a way to ban novices from flying solo until they have completed a fixed number (10?) of accompanied flights. Forcing everyone to get the Flyer ID badge is OK but that test is currently too easy and doesn't create safe plots.

Yes, although this is not specific to sub 250g, so I have put that in our other reminder. Good for it to be here though, so thanks. Although, as you will be able to fly C1 drones as sub 250g, there is a little more woggle space.

The remote ID requirement they are proposing (a hybrid of both network and broadcast remote ID) is far more complex and costly than is being implemented in the US or Europe. My suspicion is that they are doing this so they can "fall back" to broadcast only, and present that like a concession to show they "listened" to us, but tbh I am no longer of the opinion that responding to these consultations is really worthwhile - just review the RID section from page 22 to see how little heed they have placed on respondents views. No, I personally think the best chance now is for the various national associations to band together and mount legal challenges of these ridiculous, non-evidenced proposals and tie them in knots in the courts, but that will take them going to their memberships to ask for funds, and I just can't see them doing that sadly.

Hi Sean, many thanks for this. I'm interested to know how Remote ID will work in the UK will it be the same as in the US. ie can anyone use an app to see where the drone pilot is or will that information be restricted to the authorities ie the CAA or the Police. Hi Jeff! We are going to be running a UK Remote ID show very soon, possibly Monday. It will explain everything we know from technical details to who sees what. There is still a good amount undecided but there is enough to get a good picture of how it might look.
@edcbabc
@edcbabc 9 ай бұрын
It is described in detail in the document. Basically, networked RID will be there from the start, falling back to a broadcast (direct) if it cannot find a server. It is called 'hybrid'. It will be able to stop takeoff if all the ducks don't line up (waiting for server, GPS etc, I assume) - unclear how this works on home build, but there was nothing said to indicate that it wouldn't have that same intention. It effectively applies to everything, the only get out is sub 250 with no camera. Geeksvana has said something about a 'complex camera' definition being the key point, presumably rather than just any camera, but I've seen nothing about this in any CAA communication, so I'm interested to see if there's any truth in that. If there is no network connection and it is in direct broadcast mode, then stuff like ID and position are readable by anyone. On the camera, there is already a definition in 722 that a camera does not count if it is ONLY for controlling or monitoring the flight. Don't know if that is what Geeksvana means about a complex camera, or even if that statement will persist into the new regulations. It's all covered in a few paras in the document, suggest you have a read.

There is no maximum distance in the open category. That is now only used in Operational Authorisations for the specific category. You either need to follow the guidance within the CAA AMC/GM or your own interpretation of the legislation. There used to be a general 500m guidance given by the CAA but they dropped this for the open category last year.

The way this is presented, there is no need for a consultation. It is presented like Government will just impose what it wants anyway. Everyone needs to go to the consultation and state all their objections to these excessive proposals that erode yet more of our rights. In particular, I am talking about people (like me) who don't fly the latest DJI drones or even fly drones at all. I fly mainly fixed wing, some sub-250 and some over 250. The hobby of fixed wing model aviation has an envious safety record and yet all our rights to fly are going out the window. It will be a sad day and eventually (when there are no new pilots and aviation mechanics and a whole host of other aviation-related jobs) perhaps government will wise up to how destroying the hobby stopped people getting fascinated with flight, which then often led into jobs in the industry. Too late was the cry....
