I would definitely not put up another archway. I get having different areas of a garden. For instance your arid beds at the back. But that mighty Jubaea is a centrepiece palm that demands attention and a clear view towards it.

Even here in Cornwall it's been colder than usual, we already had snow, I have protected some plants, I usually do not,think its going to be a cold winter.

Incredible how much the frost opens up the garden as the foliage gets zapped. I'm Wirral so west coast and even here it's hit -4.4c in early December which is not common. You may have done a video on this already but I'd be very interested to see all the ways you've hidden your boundaries. Be good to see which climbers and shrubs have been effective and the kinds of background foliage effects you've used. Cheers.

It has been very cold for so early in winter. I just worry we are going to see another 2010 style cold (I really hope not). Thankfully it is looking milder next week, let's hope it stays that way 🤞

Hi Kris, I enjoy your vids, they are an inspiration. Following a conversation with a local grower I am left feeling confused after I got this reply “No they havent, there are a huge amount of variants of Gunnera, the Gunnera Tinctoria has always been banned. We studied Gunneras for years as so many garden centres and nurseries were selling the tinctoria labelled as manicata. We contacted the RHS about this as they had put there name to a few aswell as having them in there gardens. To get round this they changed the name of the tinctoria to cryptica this year. The Cryptica has now been banned as it is a hybrid of the tinctoria, but the manicata which we have is not banned. We are licensed by DEFRA and have started selling our manicatas to trade to get the manicata back out there, hopefully this has cleared it up for you, Yorkshire Kris is wrong on this occasion and is not APHA”

Hi Knotty, it's true that pure manicata doesn't fall under the ban but its also true that the scientific paper states that having tested and analysed samples they couldn't find any pure manicata in cultivation as all had some tinctoria in them so a hybrid between manicata and tinctoria called cryptica. So with that being said, cryptica and tinctoria fall under the ban. The question is how will it be affect trade as will Defra follow the findings of the study that found no manicata in the cultivation? I linked the papers in my video and reported as news rather than giving my personal opinion. I guess it's a bit like some of these dangerous dog breeds that have been banned. How do you prove your dog that looks like one of them isn't?

Hi Chris - Have you read about the new Gunnera ban? Apparently the hybrid Gunnera x cryptica is also now going to be banned from sale and cultivation. It was in the Guardian this morning. That’s going to upset a few people I would imagine. Thanks for the videos btw.

I’ve been digging up my Basjoo for a couple of years now. Super easy and I find less faff than wrapping with straw etc. Especially when you have a lot. I keep them on my poly tunnel at no lower than 2

It was last winter that really hurt my plants, many died or were badly damaged and some will take another year or 2 to fully recover, I think it got to -10c in my area which is highly unusual. Even the fleeced stuff froze solid.

Thanks for the mini winter tour. Ive got most of mine in the basement. But I think I missed 2 palms that I should have protected the crowns? Hoping they will be okay. Time will tell!

its been cold here in North Staffordshire .we have had a couple of nights at -7 , one at -8 and 2 nights -5 and -6 with around 6 inch of snow .we usually get one of our coldest weeks during the 1st week in December its actually not been as cold here as it was in the previous 2 winters. we had -10 in 2021 and -11 in 2022 this week in December ,so I'm feeling quite positive here 😊

Have you tried leaving the ensetes outside? In my experience, Ensete ventricosum 'Maurelii' is much, much hardier than any Musa. With only one layer of fleece (and nothing else) they don't suffer any damage, while with Musa basjoo I need a lot of protection or it loses too much pseudostem. I left a small one with no protection, and I thint it has survived (but the pseudostem is damaged) the -6 of yesterday and the -2,5 of today, we'll see, with the 25°C of next week it should grow if it's alive. My biggest one has survived 3 or 4 winters outside, in a much better condition than bringing it indoors, and at the moment is unprotected and mostly undamaged. You should try growing Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum, they are absurdly cold hardy with how tropical they look, with a little protection they don't even lose the leaves unless is a really bad winter. They are probably as hardy as a Musa basjoo's pseudostem.

Here in the UK Ensete can resist a lot of cold but the long wet winters see them rot off as spring approaches

Hi Kris. I have a small waggy which is slowly recovering from last winter. I was thinking of digging it up and potting it up to avoid this winter and giving it more sun next year. Is it a ok to do this. Cheers

In Telford last year, we had a minus nine in the first week of December, in March this year we had a minus nine. And we have just had a minus seven and two inches of snow. Keeping my fingers crossed as I lost four small palms last year.

I can't recall on that occasion. Think it was nearly 24 hrs at or below zero
