Nice work! I did High Dr to upper Gold Camp early Sat and had same dilemma with glasses vs buff. My eyelashes freeze if I don’t wear sunglasses and obviously frostbite concerns with lips/nose. I know high end ski goggles won’t fog but they’re expensive for 5 runs a year like this. I use Smartwool 250 as base layer against skin and works well pulling that sweat away. I find polyester underneath just makes me wet. My handheld froze after 2 hours. These are definitely useful training runs psychologically but obviously on dangerous side if something goes sideways. Upper 50’s Wednesday 😎

Great suggestion! I will answer in next weeks video. Basically I took a nice hot shower to warm my body up! Then I drank a plant-protein shake, eat a good meal, and drink alot of water throughout the day. Often at night I will have a cup of hot turmeric tea. Sometimes I will also use my Sauna Blanket.

I did my long run yesterday and was cursing the conditions. It was supposed to be sunny, but ended up being snowy, windy (20-30mph gusts), and 30F and I had a stream crossing that you don't cross dryly in the first 10 min - so I ran the rest with wet feet (forgot about the stream crossing when I decided to do the route). After watching this I realize that my run was a nice and cozy run comparatively.
@UltraTrailSteven11 ай бұрын
That stream crossing and the ensuing wet feet don't sound fun in those temps though!

I'm north of you in Wyoming. I am a very heavy sweater and have found it's just not safe for me to run under around 10°. It's been about -18° during the day here. Add on the wind warnings, it was miserable just walking to a vehicle. I absolutely hate treadmills, but I had to do a 7 and 10 miler on one.

History of toes frostbite, snowshoe races sub- zero temp: anyway, a zero Temps rule: 30 min max to protect toes. So running with cold toes for 30 mun, plan to go inside. Toes stopped hurting.Ran for 15 more minutes. Then went inside. No real bad damage but toes not hurting BECAUSE TOES WERE NUMB! Could have Ben worse, maybe frostnip. Anyway, toes not complaining is actually worse sometimes.

Yep good point! My feet were nice and warm in these temps with the Goretex shoes, and two layers of socks (outer layer was a Smartwool sock).

For your top layers, I'd suggest 3 layers. Skin tight base layers don't work well. In these temps, consider a mid-weight capilene or merino wool layer. It'll still conform to your body but not be as tight. This will allow the moisture to wick away from your skin a little better. Make sure it's long enough to tuck into your bottom (leg) layer(s). Mid layer, go with a thermal top that has at least a quarter zip you can use to ventilate when it really gets steamy. If it's got a hoodie on it, that's even better -- no fleece as it will hold in tons of moisture. Outer layer, I usually go waterproof shell that has pit zips. I'm not a fan of puffy-type layers, whether it's down (synthetic or natural) as they will wet out and provide little insulative value. The main thing with all of this is moisture management so you don't get hit with the chills when you're out on the mid-late afternoon, shady Intemann Trail. ;-) You're dealing with seriously difficult circumstances since you're really putting out a lot of body heat that it very challenging to manage during a run with some higher efforts, especially, after hitting the Incline. I deal with the heavy sweating, too, btw. The Springs has been "fun" the past few days... In just another day, or two, it'll feel balmy! Happy Trails!

I was running at -12° C, that might be around 10 F, and my wife joined me. She had terrible lung problems with the cold air while I didn't. She declared me a Neanderthal. That's what she is calling me in a good mood. 😎 It seems how one deals with cold air while running might depend on sex, women struggle a lot more, and indeed a bit genetics. I had a positive surprise. On frozen ground my Nike Pegasus Trail 4 GTX had incredible grip! Better than on normal, not frozen dirt. That really amazed me, entirely unexpected. They got cold after an hour, run was a bit below 2 hours. It is snowing here and I plan to buy some mid height winter running shoes for next year. I am open for recommendations to check out! 👍 P.S. should have worn gloves and glasses, my skin suffered a bit, but recovered within two days.
