Very useful and informative video since I have an 02 and they have the same transmission. I will add as a reminder to don't forget to check all three differentials (front, center, and back) and either top them off or drain and refill as needed when maintenance dictates.

I switched to that fluid on mine. Picked up a mpg or so, as well as much faster shifting. One gripe I have always had; the manual claims 5-6 quarts for a drain+fill, every 4eat i have done a simple drain+fill on took almost exactly 7.5 quarts.

Thanks for the video and was well informed. Only issue I have is putting those jack stands on bare ground. They will sink in and get you trapped or killed underneath. I used 3/4” plywood 12” squares under the jack stands for safety. Thanks

It is always a good idea to put a wire brush or soft brush to all bolts and fittings you intend to undo, before you work on underneath of a vehicle. It helps to get sockets on bolts nicely and stops dirt etc from falling on your face and eyes. Also clear safety goggles are great.

My father is a 40 year retired diesel mechanic. He always taught me that when using silicone gasket sealer to snug it up the bolts for the pan but not tight at first. let it sit overnight to cure then torque. This will create a small squeeze like you would get with an o-ring ensuring a better seal. The only reason not to do this would be time constraints like a shop, but if you're already waiting 24 hrs for the silicone to cure you might want to try it and see what you think. Ever since I started doing this, I've never had a even a drop leak.

2007 Outback, just did the service and all the cooler hoses. Filling that transmission was SO slow, not sure if something is wrong. I had to fill at about 250ml per minute or fluid would back up out of the funnel. Didnt matter if car was running or not. Stay gold.

I have fixed cvts on newer Subarus and they are still driving great for years. But just got my very first 2001 forester with 4eat... Trying to remove oil pan on the transmission and one bolt is inaccessible because it is blocked by the catalytic converter. Bolts on cat are jammed....oops. On the other hand , your outback seems to have all the room to remove the 10mil bolts on the pan. 👌👌

Not stated here is that this will only drain out about half of the old fluid, so you are mixing new fluid with the old burnt stuff. You will need to drain and fill at least 3 times ( and better, 4 or 5) to really remove the majority of old fluid.

Getting the pan off is a devil of a job because the factory RTF silicon seal really glues it on. I found a "seal separator" tool to be the answer. Lysle No.50210 to be the only way to do it in tight spaces. It is an angle blade with a hammer body. There is not enough clearance for straight tools and a risk of damaging the sealing surface by getting too rough out of frustration.

I had a leak in the AT cooling line of my 2005 Outback, went to Advance Auto stating make/model/year and the clerk sold me 3 qts. of IDEMITSU Type J. Before getting the line repaired I bought another qt. Now that I have it fixed I looked up capacities and discovered Subaru spec fluid is: Genuine Subaru Automatic Transmission Fluid, IDEMITSU ATF HP, Castrol Transmax J, Pennzoil ATF-J or Dexron III. So the fluid is probably now about 1/3 IDEMITSU Type J, which is for Nissan/Infiniti, not Subaru. I talked to a tech guy at Idemitsu and he said their Type J will damage the Subaru transmission. Do you have any informed insights into whether I need to get the Type J completely out of the tranny, whether the standard drain plug drain would be good enough, or if in its diluted amount it is OK as is ??? I'm looking for a newer Outback and would prefer not to spend money on the 2005 if I can avoid it, but want to keep it working well.

Hello, I'm having this puzzling issue that I don't understand; for the last couple of years my Subaru forester 2010 SH automatic has given a really rough jerk while coasting at 80+ km/h, typically ABS and ESP lighting up, cruises control disabled. The lights turn off after I restart the engine. This has happened so infrequently that it's been impossible to anticipate and difficult to diagnose. My local Subaru shop thought it might have something to do with the temperature gauge, but after inspection found that it was fine. Yesterday I had three rough jerks in a 15-minute drive. It's quite uncomfortable, and I'm pretty fresh out of ideas. Any tips would be most welcome!

Can this procedure be used on a 2011 Forester FB20 engine? I need to have the fluid replaced and dealers are charging a fortune to do it...

Our wagon won't go forward when you first select drive. If you sit for a minute or so it will catch. It has 200000 and to my knowledge to trans service. I'm told a rebuild is 2500+. Hopefully we don't need one. What do you think??

Sounds just like delay forward engagement. Does the transmission give any issues otherwise? Slipping, etc?
@ATVmaniac50
@ATVmaniac50 5 жыл бұрын
MrSubaru1387 my 03 does that too and it slips especially when cornering. Like when you’re coming out of a corner, the transmission slips pretty bad sometimes. I’ve done mostly all of the maintenance on my car myself after purchasing it used(had no issues until recently) and as far as I know the transmission fluid has never been changed, at least since I bought it at 197k and it now has 245k. Do you think that may be causing it to slip? The car drives great otherwise but the slipping (especially accelerating out of corners) is concerning me.

Mr Subaru, I really like Your videos, and I did some jobs in my Outback 2001 h6 watching Your tutorials. Thanks a lot! I'm trying to find a solution for problem which I have. When the weather is colder, and the car isn't used for one or more days, the transmission don't want to change to 2nd gear. Check engin light come on P0732. After mile or two everything works perfect. I have changed ATF. Drain off 3 times. I have cleared the oil pan and internal filter. Befor new oil I have changed the external ATF filter to OEM, couse the old one has had leakege. After 3rd oil change I have change the Oil filter again, but not OEM and for few weeks problem disapeard. Now comes back. ATF is Amsoil ATF ss series, so is full synthetic. I don't understand, why the problem appear only when is colder outside and after one day without car. I thought that the filter couse the problem, but now I'm not sure. Any ideas? Please, help, couse I heard from mechanics, that I need vey expensive AT rebuild. But AT is OK, works really fine after mile or in hotter days.

@@jerrybartlett1142 Nope. Now befor I start a trip, I put on HOLD and I use 3rd gear. So on the beggining car use gear 2 and 3. After mile or two I'm backing to normal and turn D. This is working completly fine.

FYI Dont use a shitty torque wrench on those bolts you will break them off! I would just use a small 1/4” socket wrench with one hand until snug

Nice video - why don't you use a gasket? also why didn't you clean the filter while the pan was dropped?

What are your thoughts on changing the fluid in a 200k mile 08 automatic impreza, the old myth of don't change the fluid unless it's been changed consistently, not knowing the cars history what are your thoughts on this. Thanks

First time owning a Subaru it's a 2005 Subaru Forester ll Bean and just wondering if these automatics are just naturally kind of laggy or if I should be worried cause I can feel it shift haven't driven an automatic in a few years.

kevin norman if you can feel it change like almost thump into gear, when cold they can tend to bang a bit but once warm it should change effortlessly. I wold get a service done on it, a fluid flush and have the heat exchanger flow tested as these are the first things to clog with crud and impede flow, causing poor clutch pressures. I had a Nissan patrol that for nearly 6 months never saw overdrive even on the highway as the heat exchanger was too clogged. If that doesn’t solve it I would start looking deeper into the tram Addison control and/or wear on components. I would also check that all your tyres have the same tread depth and pattern as this may cause what seem to be transmission issues.

I know this is an old video, but I was curious to ask about the internal filter for the transmission fluid? Not just the outside can style. Did that also get changed and or did you go for a flush of the system and then replace the fluid?

Hey Mr Subaru, you used permatex ultra grey instead of the Subaru three bond? I'm an idiot and used a felpro gasket on my 95 legacy and it's still leaking (the old black silicone was leaking)
