Today we show the steps involved testing and replacing a Subaru Camshaft Position Sensor; P0340 and P0341. Both P0340 & P0341 deal with the cam position sensor. P0341 may trip if there's a problem with a camshaft sprocket and/or if the timing belt is dislocated. This particular vehicle is a '10 Impreza non-turbo. Ending Music: Turn On by RW Smith.

Good presentation. When testing resistance, check your leads before making any measurement. Touch the red and black probes together. Your meter should read below 0.10ohms. Unplug and reseat the leads in the meter. Helps to verify that you aren't being led astray by continuity problems with your test leads.

This was the perfect demonstration of what I needed to do for my 1996 Subaru Legacy, which was starting sometimes, and then not starting other times. Ran the codes and then watched this video. Sensor was found to be good and and everything tested out good, so I tried to wiggle the sensor and, voila, it was loose. So I snugged it up and it starts up every time now. Saved me a trip to the shop and not having to hear my mechanic try and sell me something I didn't need.

When I tell y'all I read this comment after my car stalled out and wouldn't even start at some point for code p0340... Found where the sensor was because of this video... Just one fingertip touched the wire before it just fell. IT WAS NOT CONNECTED ALL THE WAY! I hope the same thing happens for anyone reading this comment, cuz I don't have money for this Subaru for another 10 days bruh! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾

On my '07 Imprezza it helped to remove the coolant tank (no tools needed) and the battery, for room to fit my hands and wrench in that small space. Saved a lot of cursing! The manual requires disconnecting the battery ground anyway, before unplugging ANYTHING.

Thank you so much for this video! I have a 2007 and this video likely saved me a few hundred bucks. I bought a decent multimeter and followed your instructions. I tested and the part was fine, the continuance was fine… the part must have been loose or the wires not seated because after putting it back and tightening everything, the error cleared and everything is working as it should. A mechanic might have simply replaced the part, and they definitely would have charged labor, even if just to tighten the bolts and connection.

Great video!! What could the explanation be when both P0335 and P0340 come on together? Timing issue, sensor issue, or something else? Car cranks, does not start, wait for a few hours and it starts instantly.

Good break down, but the best way to look at this is with a scope. You verified the ground with your meter, which your best bet is to always go to the battery for best results. But a scope will verify if the ecm sends a bias voltage to the sensor and will pick up if there are missing or damaged teeth on the cam sprocket. Also testing the ohms across the sensor can give you false readings due to temperature. Also when testing a circuit its best to load test them by loading the circuit typically by a non led test light to verify the circuit integrity. By no means am I trying to knock you, but just be aware of other issues that can be present

Isn't the 'wifi' symbol actually a speaker symbol noting when the leads are touched together, the continuity is verified by the 'beep' sound; very valuable when troubleshooting when you cannot see the meter.
@brentridings

Only thing I would add is you really need to do a continuity check from cam plug to the ECM connector. To verify no breaks or high resistance in that line. Otherwise good video

I had code P0341 on my impreza 2013 base model. The mechanic replaced two sensors on the driver side. The engine light came on after a few months. I went back to him and he switched the two sensors with the other side. He told me if it still shows up, he has to open it to see if there are other issues. A few days later the engine lights came on again, but and after a day or two the engine light disppeared. I was told it is how sensors reset themselves. For a few days there was no problem. I took the car as a trade-in for a leasee car. I wonder and regret if I shoud have kept the car a bit longer in the hope of hanging on to it. Now I have to make monthly payments for the car that I leased. Cars are expensive these days.

When you test the wiring harness does a battery need to be hooked up to the car? I’m not getting a beep testing the harness, but the car doesn’t have a battery in it right now if that affects the reading? I’ve just been starting the car with a jumper pack and running off the alternator when I’ve been testing the car if that affects anything. I’m trying to diagnose a p0390 (camshaft position sensor B circuit) getting a good reading off the sensor itself
