I have a 2019 as well. I just went to change the oil but decided I better watch a video first in case there is something I'm missing. Sure enough, I don't have any crush washers. :)

Just wanted to add that the drain opening is angled toward the driver's side door, so when you pull the plug it shoots out out at almost a 45 degree angle, so don't just place a small oil catcher just directly below the drain, or you will have a mess to clean up

I like to do my changes after the car has been sitting for 1 hour after a drive. Before I even remove the oil drain bolt, I like to start topside by removing the oil dipstick, cracking loose the oil fill cap, and cracking loose the oil filter by 1/4 turn - just so I know in my mind that I'll actually be able to remove it. After this topside prep, I then proceed underneath and drain the oil. As for the oil filter, once the gasket makes contact with the tray after spinning it on, I give it 3/4 turn and that's it.

I'm in Sydney, Australia & I just bought a 2019 Subaru Impreza for my wife. It has done 2500kms & I decided to change the oil & oil filter as it is a new engine. Firstly, Subaru said it DID NOT need oil change until 12,400kms. I think this is insane as I change oil when it is dirty, generally every 4000kms. Maybe it is overkill, but I know engines perform better when kept clean. Anyway, the amount of force I needed to remove the oil filter & the sump bolt was ridiculous. I am so glad I changed it rather than wait as it would have not been easy to remove. I used an Australian oil Penrite HPR 0-30w & a quality oil filter. The difference at cold start was instantly better. Fast flow and much quieter than when new. Keeping in mind the first oil batch was filthy black at 2500kms, I strongly suggest changing your Subaru oil at much smaller intervals as the engines have tight tolerances and appear to use a average oil from factory. Definitely supply your own oil & filter if you use a mechanic. I would not go to a Subaru dealer for 'service' only for repair under warranty. Just my two cents, I amnot an employee, just a DIY mechanic who does most of his own work on the household cars. Great video, keep em coming.

Thanks for stopping by! It's definitely a great idea to change the oil early on any brand new car; I was surprised how tight everything was on this car. My wife has driven 12k miles so far and recently noticed burn in on her head unit, have you experienced this yet? Seems like they are susceptible and need a screensaver or something.

The first thing I did to my Crosstrek was to change the oil drainer plug to a Fumoto F108S drain valve. It makes oil changes much easier ($29.95). Do NOT do this if you are gonna go off roading. PS: Mark, you did an excellent choice of oil/filter brand, good job bud 👊🏻👍🏻

Thank you, time for daughter's oil change, now that we are past all recalls. I always use the level gauge oil extractor, saves me from getting down under and dirty. Some say bad residue at bottom stays, but I give it a good 5min rev up before suctioning out and so far my German cars have survived 15 years with this method.
@MarkMethods

I've considered buying an extractor, seems like a good way to perform maintenance; I think long as you are changing it regularly whatever accumulation at the bottom is probably negligible.

I too have a 2019 Crosstrek. When I bought it they gave me free oil change for life as long as I took it back to them in Roanoke Va. The first time change they had down 6qt on work order??? So I asked they gave me bull shit The second time I had them change same thing 6 qt but the owners manual says 4.7 I raised hell with them even the Subaru corp called me Have you or does anybody else came across this issue with any other dealers. There response was the cavity holds 6 qts.

Interesting, *puts on tin foil hat* I have never run a shop but it almost sounds like they're using that to cook their books maybe for taxes or to launder money. *takes off hat* But I could be wrong, I don't have enough information to make that determination. I haven't heard of dealers doing this, Subaru of America said that was the reason or the dealer did? Sounds like they were trying to get you off the phone. I have never trusted free oil changes, growing up my friend picked up a 350z and was given free oil changes. He picked his car up from one and he noticed after driving a bit the engine didn't sound good. Checked the dipstick, dry. He got oil to keep it from seizing and the dealer said sorry. Eventually many hard miles down the road he spun a bearing. I think this single event eventually caused premature failure.

I've heard the filter draws in a certain amount of oil (it saturates) and that you should compensate for that... i've seen some guys fill the filter with oil before applying the filter. What are your thoughts?
@speddyg
@speddyg 2 жыл бұрын
I'm not an expert but I think it's not possible in this case, because the filter is on top of the engine and not underneath. Therefore, the oil used to fill the filter will spill. Some cars have the oil filter close by from where you drain the oil, under the car and in those cases it's possible to prefill the filter.

While this is under warranty I'll be using their recommended weight, my general rule of thumb is to do whatever the manufacturer says. The tapping on the oil filter was due to how tight the factory had set the filter. I was showing my failures until I got to the oil wrench.
