SUBARU DRIFT BUILD |5| RWD Transmission Install

In this episode of Dirtcheapdaily, Aaron converts his 2004 Subaru Legacy Outback to rear wheel drive!
This isn't just another welded center differential. This is a full on rear wheel drive conversion utilizing a Toyota R series RWD truck transmission.
The R150 we used came out of a 2 wheel drive 1997 Toyota T100. It is similar to a R154 which was the 5-speed manual transmission that came in the Mark IV Toyota Supra. The gearing is setup differently, but overall it is similarly robust. The main difference between a R150 and R154 is the price point. R150's can be found in most junkyards for around $100 whereas the R154 is heavily sought after and range in price from $1000-$4000.
The Bellhousing adapter adapts the Toyota W series and R series transmissions to the Subaru EJ engines.
This also means that it can adapt them to the EZ engine which has a similar bolt pattern!
This part of the build was really fulfilling as it truly changed this Subie into a RWD wagon.

hopefully that flywheel was still all good, my uncle did a clutch swap on his RX-7 and the flywheel look perfect still, he just cleaned it up, a week later clutch blew and he took it to mechanic, the flywheel had a very very slight warp that was not noticable when looked at.

Subaru didn't make different length pivot balls, there is just two spots for them on the transmission. One hole is for cable clutch, the other is hydro. He probably was modeling it off a cable clutch setup.

That is incorrect. Subaru most definitely made different length pivot balls. When I swapped from a 2.2 clutch to the 06-07 WRX clutch in my EZ30 swap I needed to use a different length pivot ball. Part Numbers: Short: 30537AA030 Long: 30537AA061

are you sure its not just that you have to lock the throwout beahring into the pressure plate, for my 02 wrx i had to hit the fork with a hammer to lock the beahring in place, not sure if its the same for this though

No. The wrx got a pull type clutch which the tob clips onto the pressure plate. This is a push type clutch which has a "free floating" tob

nice video , quick question i have 1993 awd impreza sedan L 5spd ej18 and i bought a spec stage 3 clutch kit but the pressure plate does not fit it doesn't seat flush.... could i use the old stock pressure plate with it ? thanks in advance

You can use the old p.p. But it won’t clamp much and will probably be the same as a stock clutch

Next time try get someone to wiggle the crank pulley bolt back and forth as you wiggle the transmission in.

or just get that 22mm crank socket (if its the same for the H6) and a breaker bar and hang it so you can nudge it with your feet and wiggle the tranny at the same time. yep ERees i was thinking the same thing

You need to do more to run a manual transmission on the EZ30d H6 then just hook up the mechanical components. Since the 1st gen EZ30d never came in a manual transmission option you will need to make up some resistors and a transistor circuit to fool the TCU into thinking the auto is still there and functioning. Otherwise you will see some engine codes and a MEL on the dash. Unfortunately its not as simple as grounding a pin on the ECU with these motors as it was with the EJ's

Check engine codes don’t really matter to me. SoI’ve got it setup and working with no issues and very little actual wiring

i was also wondering about it too, have you gotten far enough in to drive it yet? does it go into limp mode or anything?

The TCU wont throw the ECU into limp mode. He will get an MEL on the dash, his idle will be a bit wild, and he has more chance of stalling when he comes to a stop but it won't affect his performance. If he needs to pass emission testing in Minnesota is where he would run into problems with the check engine light being on. If you get tired of the check engine light and the stalling at a stop I'm happy to help you out with the resistor and transistor circuit.

Not sure what you did before the resistors, but mine idles normally just like it did before pulling the auto trans and it’s never gotten close to stalling on me. Just hangs out at 7-900rpm whenever the clutch is in or when it’s in neutral.

You have to take apart a set of front axles and but the splined stub through and put the axle nut on, else the wheelbearing will come apart
