Hard to argue against the 2005 EJ20x GT Wagon I have. 500,000km. Type C big turbo & tune from Japan new. Only time I had to add oil between changes was when the turbo oil line came a little loose. Rarely add any coolant. Change good oil every 5000km. Timing bits every 60,000km Still pulls without lag to the limiter. Doesn't like being parked pointed uphill, because of the oil pickup, so I don't. I warm it up to temp before driving, as you say, it keeps those forged pistons happy. Just replaced the rear passenger wheel bearing for the first time ever. Replaced usual suspension bits due to wild country driving but that engine just purrs along. I regularly tow a small boat a thousand km (600 miles) and it only goes above 2500rpm on 2 mountains. My buddy upgraded to an FA Gt type and had to change wheels and suspension just to make it drive-able, but it just doesn't do it. More fuel, less performance. I'm thinking of getting a replacement gold anodised billet EJ and then when the day comes, have it made into my tombstone when I die. Fastest most reliable car a plus six foot guy can comfortably sleep in. It all comes down to the engine.

The Fa engine has an upper oil pan with integrated baffle so it doesn’t have so much sloppy oil windage. It also serves as structural reinforcement. The iconic ej sound comes from exhaust pulses striking the sharp bends in the manifold instead of directly feeding the turbocharger. Ive never heard someone argue better mpgs on an EJ…thats like one of the major benefits of going with newer DI. At least you EJ people don’t have to clean your valves every other year.

NEW Subscriber - Sir, I must say you are so thorough on your breakdown of the different aspects of these Subaru vehicles is quite impressive. I am a 61 year old guy ( No Mechanical aptitude to speak of ) I have not owned a vehicle since May 2023. I am looking at a 2005 Outback that a repair shop has for sale. 251,000 miles ( 3 owners) I test drove it yesterday and it really performed well. The Carfax report say's that the Head Gasket was replaced at 97,000. The A/C does not work right now ( Belt not attached ) I worry that the Head Gasket is blown or even slightly leaking again, it's been nearly 160,000 miles?? They are asking $2,500. It needs new tires + brakes ( front / rear ). I cannot afford to have someone tear down the engine to replace another head gasket...putting $3,000 in for brakes + tires + and some minor things is doable? and I forgot tomention the steering wheel is slightly off center? ( front end alignment maybe? )

I think there is an even better series than the EJ and that is the EA series (OHV, not the EA82 and ER27) I daily drive a 79 Subaru DL Wagon that has a 1989 EA71S engine that I rebuilt and modified myself. It makes around 120hp naturally aspirated with 12:1 compression and a 310/310 duration camshaft. The powerband starts just above 3500 RPM and peaks at 6500. Since the rebuild, I have put around 200,000 miles on the engine at a rate of about 50,000 miles per year. It does nearly 100 percent highway miles at between 3500 and 5000 rpm cruising. Since a valve adjustment is required around once every 10,000 miles, I have seen under the valve covers around 20 times since the rebuild. It is absolutely spotless under there, and the inside of the cylinders have no scoring or bore polishing whatsoever. There is no timing chain or belt to worry about, only two solid metal gears. The oil pump is right on the front of the engine and easily accessible. There are no oil starvation issues going around tight turns. I think the EJ is better than the FA/FB but it will never dethrone the king, the EA series, at least in the longevity department.

Over the past 4 years ( I bought it in 2020) it has averaged 31 mpg. If I were into modifying a car, I would probably prefer the EJ. But for just driving, the F is fine. I bought the car with 60k miles and have put 60k on it. My goal is 300k. So far just normal items like brakes, tires, oil, filters, and a PCV valve.

I unfortunately lost my 08 outback 2.5L with the EJ engine in a wreck earlier this year. It had the multi-layered head gasket and the thing ran like a champ at almost 300k miles and everything worked. My newest Subaru is a 22 outback with the F series engine and I must say the fuel economy is MUCH better than my old outback. I imagine it has more to do with the CVT transmission than the engine. I could probably go without filling its also larger fuel tank for a month. I drive about 450-500 miles a month on average on mostly country back roads which aren't great on fuel economy to begin with. That being said I still have a 99 forester in the fleet that is going strong with little rust and the EJ251 still going strong. The thing will just not die. And everything still works! Well other than the radio but oh well can always swap it. Great video.

In-so-far as fuel mileage goes, the driver has a huge impact on that. We have a bone stock 2018 Impreza 5 door base model. There is easily a 5 mpg difference between when my wife drives the car and when I drive the car. I get mileage approaching 40 mpg on the highway and 30+ in the city. I am a much more conservative driver. I'm easier on the throttle when taking off from a stop, I maintain a more consistent speed when driving, and I let off of the gas much sooner when coming to a stop. I believe that my driving style is also much easier on the brakes and the CVT. As much as my wife likes to zoom-zoom around town, she wouldn't drive my built NA '92 Mustang 5.0 hatchback.

I never for a moment doubted my EJ22 SOHC for reliability, durability, or repairability for a few bucks and a few hours' work. The FA24D? Not so much, though at least there's no t-belt to change. IME, mileage definitely goes to FA, though. My 5MT FWD '90 Legacy averaged around 27 mpg. The RWD 6MT GR86 with the same wheelbase, approximately same weight, and better aero (not sure with frontal area as it's lower, but wider, though it definitely has a lower cd), but about 100 more hp, .2 liters more displacement, (relatively) wider tires, and shorter gearing (5th in the Legacy was 27mph/1k rpm and 6th in the '86 is 23) gets in the low 30s on the highway at about the same extra legal highway speeds on summer blend fuel. Of course, the EJ22 ran on beer piss and the FA needs premium, so cost is probably higher for the FA.

It’s tuned on e50 and makes 385hp/400ft-lbs on the dyno. Redline is set to 6600rpm. I get about an ounce of brown goo in the PCV catch can every 2k miles, but I’m getting absolutely nothing in the CCV catch can on the front of the engine. It still looks new inside. I even checked the stock hose that was coming out of the CCV and it doesn’t have an oily film on the inside. Car has 8500 miles, and has been tuned and wearing catch cans for 6500 miles. I take it to Autocross and a road course track so the car has been driven HARD since 1k miles. Is the dry CCV can something I should worry about, or did I just get lucky with a very tight engine built on a Wednesday? The other point is you can make more power for less in an FA24 with just and intake, TMIC/FMIC, blended fuel tube or E85 than an EJ25.

I own engines for both, an EJ in a 2002 WRX wagon and an F-series in my 2021 Impreza Sport wagon, and while age and power output is a factor, my F-series has certainly held up better under hotlaps than the EJ, and the EJ was just rebuilt with a fresh short block BY a Subaru master tech after 155000 miles on the original engine. The EJ can be more easily modded, but REQUIRES it in order to endure the same intensity of driving as the F-series, in my experience. I’m also a lot more eager to help pioneer mods for the F-series, as centrifugal superchargers are often overlooked for Subaru engines, yet make so much sense, and have been holding up well on BRZs and other NA F-series thus far thanks to Subaru’s own years of experience and improvements for reliability within their engines.

@@iAmFAUST What's the point? By the time the EJ hits 1500 HP, it no longer resembles the original engine. I think the vast majority of sub owners want to have a 200K plus mile car,.
@iAmFAUST4 ай бұрын
@Kibwunga nobody buys a sports car to keep forever with mileage like that I think that's why people buy Toyota camrys and corollas. Funny how every time opposition, in terms of performance, slaps the dick of truth on the foreheads of the delusional, they always seem to try to talk about reliability and lasting. Then keep it stock and of that's the case, the car with the STI EJ motor is still better. Now it is established better stock, and better ultimate build, but you want to defend in-between? Well, looks like there are 3 topics in this discussion and you at least lose 2 out of 3.

EJ, FA/FB, they both sound like tractors to me. They're both open deck blocks, which means modification in order for them to handle high hp.They both keep a low center center of gravity, which is a plus, and engine removal for either is very straightforward. Both engines are pretty simple. Cam timing from belt to chain isn't so different that it would be difficult to adapt. There's always gonna be a subaru following, I would say that either is a good entry-level engine to disassemble and learn about modern engines.

Another item to consider is the way it performs, the older era Subie engines just pulled better. It’s subjective, but there is something about that era of Subaru that has feel and Percy that the newer engines just do not have.

Odd you mention fuel economy, My old 2011 EJ Impreza hatchback at best could get 26 MPG on my commute, I could get an average of 32 MPG on my 2015 FB Impreza hatchback on that same trip... However I threw all that economy out the window when I traded up a 2019 WRX, STi Drivetrain swapped it and did some performance modification and dyno tune.

Mr. Subaru, it would be great to see a video on how to get better fuel economy on my 2005 EJ Outback? Outside of a stock tune-up, what mods would give better fuel economy?

I purchased a '14 Outback 6MT with the FB new in...2014. I'd traded one of my 2011s for it and noticed, from new, chain rattle - slight but pretty noticeable. Of course I had the dreaded oil consumption issues and had a warranty-replaced short block at 18k miles. I traded it in 2019 for a new F350 - that '14 Outback sadly couldn't tow a 16k lb. horse trailer. Replaced it with a one-owner 2010 6MT with an EJ and enjoy it much more than that '14.

Hey Mr Subaru, I like your channel you keep it simple and informative. Do you think it makes sense to rebuild an EA82T engine?!
@TheSharkGirls5 ай бұрын
I would. It is cheap and easy compared to a swap. If you're happy with the way it normally drives. I have 2 fine non-turbo EA82 wagons and would love to pop a turbo in one, just for out bush.

FB is superior in terns of naturally aspirated output at 228HP (BRZ). As for your fuel economy claims, I have a 14 legacy 30mpg average when I drove it before giving it to my wife. I now drive a 2010 outback 3.6R and my average is 25mpg...I get nearly 29 on the highway. Also no $1K+ timing belts every 105K.

The BRZ has an FA24 not a FB. That is a very cherry picked one since the latest FB25 from the 2025 Forester is at 180HP.

The unique rumble sound made the car more desirable. It's unfortunate that Subaru left the experience that the owners loved. Now, the WRX is a great option for those who need a four-wheel drive and don't need ground clearance. The EJ sound is the one that turns the heads of enthusiasts.

Late model EJ with MLS head gasket FTW. BTW, do you recommend flushing CVT fluid on 2012 Outback at 120K miles if it has never been changed? Or it might start slipping and best just let it run at this point? This is California car and running OK now.

EJ will forever be iconic. No getting around that! Still have my old '01 Outback SUS with the NA EJ251 and has 264k miles on the clock. Still running good! As for the FA's, particularly the FA24DIT, gets 'cheap' horsepower. A simple air intake and tune can net you ~325-350 HP & 350+ TQ. There are quite a few tuners posting some insane results with very few mods on the FA24DIT.. My '15 VA WRX by comparison took quite a bit more to achieve comparable results. I now have a '24 VB WRX, but I'm keeping that warranty intact.. for the time being anywho. 😏
