Subaru Forester Fuel Pump Replacement DIY

This is a quick and easy DIY on how to replace your first generation Subaru Forester's Fuel Pump. The process is the same for many years Subarus and should only take about 30 minutes to complete the whole process with basic tools. I created this DIY pretty quickly and it isn't my best work due to being pressed for time. More Subaru DIY's are coming soon though!

For anyone wondering, The fuse to the fuel pump on the 2.5L 2002 Subaru Forester is the #13 fuse in the internal fuse box (behind the coin tray next to the steering wheel)

You definitely want to release the fuel pressure before you do that. You could do that by removing the fuel pump fuse in the fuse box. Turn the car on until it dies. Then crank it a couple more times just to be sure

What fuel pump did you purchase ? I have the same year Subaru with 133xxx miles starting to miss fire but not giving me codes yet … since I replaced the spark plugs coil and cables not to long ago

How did you know you need a new fuel pump? I’m looking to buy one and the lady saying that it needs a fuel pump and she was quoted 220 to replace it? I’m wondering when I talk to her if your problem can be described and then I can tell if she’s telling the truth please let me know thanks

I was having a terrible misfire without any helpful codes other than "misfire cyl 1, 2, 3, 4" and I'm pretty good on maintenance. With 220,000+ miles I figured my pump was due for a replacement anyway. However that turned out not to be the issue. It ended up being the ignition coil. A good way to test the pump is to test fuel pressure before the filter and see if it drops at all during a misfire condition.

I'm having a gas leak in that same area of my 04 forester, the undercarriage is rusted to hell so I really hope its not my tank leaking, could it be the fuel pump seal thats causing the leak? I might replace the fuel pump see if thsts fixes it

It's definitely possible that the seal on the pump to the tank is bad and needs to be replaced. Also the filler neck on these usually rots too, so I'd check that area out as well.

@@FoulNews My 99’ Forrester is gas leak is in the front passenger side.And I got to this myself can’t afford a mechanic to place a new clamp. Could you do a tutorial for this portion please? @@cmorenoc7 The best way to inspect it is to get close to the filler neck and the hose where it meets the tank and have someone pour some gas in slowly. You may be able to see where the leak is coming from exactly. Most of the times the neck rusts away and the hose connecting the neck to the tank can dry out and crack as well. The hose is fairly easy to replace and is a good starting point. You can find it here: amzn.to/3EQNU5V or at AutoZone with part # FNH110.

What year forester mate and how often are you meant to change them

It's a 1999 and usually they last quite a long time. My original one around over 223,000mi / 358,000km. I replaced mine due to some misfires, but it turned out that the ignition coil was the culprit instead.

Yeh im getting the same issue struggles when I put my foot down, I've change spark plugs coil packs I'm not sire what else besides fuel pump..

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe the process would be very similar. As far as I know, the pump is in the same location. But I believe they are slightly different pumps.
