「インプレッシブ・スポーツセダン」をコンセプトに、走行性能を徹底的に高めたスポーティセダンがインプレッサ WRXシリーズであり、
世界ラリー選手権 (WRC) 参戦車両として高性能が与えられたモデルで、全輪駆動（AWD）や強化サスペンションなど、ラリーをイメージした技術が採用されていた。
2代目は2000年にデビュー、初期型は丸目2灯であり、スポーツ走行での安定性を考慮しブリスターフェンダーを備えていた。
STiによるチューニングが施され、6MT車にはビスカスLSD付きセンターデフ方式の4WDが設定されていた。
搭載される可変バルブタイミング機構を持つ水平対向4気筒DOHC16バルブエンジンは、インタークーラー付きターボにより1994ccの排気量から、最高出力280ps(206kW)/6400rpm、最大トルク38.0kg・m(373N・m)/4000rpmを発揮した。

Based on the concept of "Impressive Sports Sedan," the Impreza WRX series is a sporty sedan with thoroughly improved driving performance.
It was a high-performance model that competed in the World Rally Championship (WRC), and featured rally-inspired technologies such as all-wheel drive (AWD) and reinforced suspension.
The second generation debuted in 2000, and the initial model had two round lights and had blister fenders for stability during sports driving.
It was tuned by STi, and the 6MT model was equipped with a center differential 4WD with a viscous LSD.
The horizontally opposed 4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve engine with a variable valve timing mechanism has a displacement of 1994cc due to a turbo with intercooler, maximum output 280ps (206kW) / 6400rpm, maximum torque 38.0kg・m (373N・m) / 4000rpm demonstrated.
