Great Points! I would like to see: 1. Recovery Points! Front and Rear the "tow" hooks aren't rated or good for vehicle recovery. We're going off-road, recovery points are important 2. X - Mode selector button/switch not integrated into the touchscreen. We're in the backwoods, don't want a screen crack or freeze and can't use the advanced 4x4 3. Locking Diff. Would help keep the wheel spin down when climbing 4. Factory Tow Hitch Installation option (not dealer installed) 5. Remote Start on key fob - just what I need ANOTHER phone app /s 6. Accessory Mounting/Routing - not just Subaru but all should put easier cable paths. Cable run for dashcam, accessible firewall routes, front to rear for dash camera or CB/Ham antenna, Roof to Hood, and with airbags in mind, good mounting points near the dash for phone/tablet The Ascent has good cameras and a rear view mirror screen camera so not sure why that didn't make it down as an option. Also agree the rear hatch needs a sensor bypass so it can be left open without power drain. I think some have said a small carabiner can be put into the hatch lock to trick it showing closed

I chose the Forester as the roof rails on the Outback is useless for my purposes, so that is a big gripe I have with the Outback. I also prefer physical buttons rather than a big screen and the 2021 Forester fortunately still have that and a CD player as well which is awesome. As for common issues with both vehicles, yes the auto stop/start feature is a universal gripe every owner has. I hate it and would like it off by default. I'd rather save my engine and starter motor than save on gas. My understanding is that it can be set to turned off by default using a diagnostic tool plugged into the OBD2 port. And yes, the Hold should be on by default. Never had issues so far with the CVT cruising at 80-85 mph yet, but I am worried about CVT issues in the future and general longevity of these transmissions. I would much rather have a manual transmission. My last car had one and it lasted almost 300 K miles and it was not the transmission that failed. They make cars last way longer and you have so much more control. AC outlet would be nice as well. I have an 1800W power station and 200W solar panel that I use off the beaten path so I am pretty much set there. I suspect the reluctance of putting one in is the danger of discharging your car battery too much especially when the engine is not running. As for the poor camera quality. Well, mine only has a rear camera as it is the Premium trim but it seems ok to me. I frankly don't use it too much as I find the actual distances to look distorted so I prefer to just look back when I am backing up. Old habit I suppose as well. I would have preferred the wilderness trim but it's just too expensive for what you are getting. I think the Premium will suit my needs ok as I'll stick to just roads including rough roads and not actually off-roading. It has better mpg as well.

Another pet peave is the vehicle is rated to tow 3500 lbs however Subaru only puts a 1000 lb Hitch on it 3500 not available and by law if you tow over 1k you need trailer brakes and a 7pin hitch. Subaru doesn't have the 7 pin hitch for the Outback however even in the owners manual it says when towing over 1k you need trailer brakes. So the advertised towing capacity of the outback its technically a lie Subaru will not install a 7 pin hitch which is needed to tow more than 1k.

As an Aussie waiting for the Australian version of the Outback Wilderness to grace our shores - well that would be VERY welcomed DownUnder. But of course it’s wishful thinking. Subaru are only making token gestures to the Subaru ‘enthusiasts’… Nothing substantial will ever happen with the transmissions or low-range wise - because it’s at most 15% of the perceived market for the Outback. It’s just such a shame that they don’t offer these things as optional upgrades. You know - to allow the vehicle to reach its full potential… IMHO it’s still an ‘Outback’ in name only… and until there’s a change in the mindset of Subaru Japan and/or Subaru Australia - we’ll just be ignored…

So I've had my 2023 OBW since March. I take it offroading quite a lot and i've upgraded many things to make the vehicle more capable. Heres my take and/or solutions. 1) The backup camera has been decent with brighter diode dynamics backup lights, but definitely worse quality than even my old 1080p dashcam. 2) In terms of having a 120V outlet, i have an Ecoflow delta max which is always plugged into 12V. Its bluetooth controllable and I run a lot of electronics off it. 3) Cobb is planning on something for the outback wilderness in 2024. They already have a tune for the ascent which has the same engine, transmission, diff. 4) I installed the autostop start eliminator the 2nd day I owned the car. Hasnt been an issue since. 5) Never experienced the 80-85mph gear hunt issue, and I regularly bring the car to around 117 mph. The anti wobble mount solved a lot of transmission issues in my use case at lower speeds. 5th gen 4runners hunt for gears all the time, so i guess im just used to it?:😅 6) The 2025 Forester/Explorer looks whack, and I really hope that the design language doesnt translate into new model years. Outbacks.

Right on!!! Cameras - check. The cameras do suck. Even the Nissan Leaf has 4 cameras (front/rear/ l&r Mirrors). AC Outlet - check. Missing. For a brand that prides itself as an Outdoor, Adventure, Camping, Family oriented car company, an AC outlet is almost mandatory. Auto Start/Stop and AVH feature - check. Owners should have the option to Enable/Disable these features. They are very confusing. Gear hunting around 80-85 MPH, I haven't noticed it. Maybe characteristic of their CVT. Subaru should have a channel for Owners to give Feedback and SERIOUSLY consider to implement.

- Cameras are definitely a first world problem. We've been reversing, including with trailers without cameras for years, cameras are meant just a helpful tool, not a replacement for driving skills. - The auto start / stop tells more about the users than the designers. If you stop the car and hold the brake pedal gently, the engine doesn't stop, it will stop if you press it a but harder, so it's an option, even when it's ON. It comes from many countries requiring that idling cars do not produce any emissions. - Yes, at certain speeds the CVT is snooping around for a perfect ratio and it is truly annoying.

The problem with my auto stop is it seems to use too many factors to decide whether it auto stops or not, and is extremely inconsistent. Everyone tells me what you said, and I know where the pedal needs to be for it to activate, and it only activates maybe 15% of the time.

I nearly fell off my chair laughing when the first thing you mentioned were the cameras.. I totally agree that the resolution on these is abysmal. We were looking at the OBW in 2022 and I mentioned this to the sales person who laughed and shrugged it off. Then we showed her that our 9 year old BMW i3 had what looked like 4x the resolution. She couldn't believe it. There is absolutely no excuse for this on Subarus end. Between this and the auto start/stop I was out. I realize there is an aftermarket solution to that but why, on a brand new car do we need to start doing this. All the items you mention are super valid, not just to enthusiasts but to the masses. We all want better cameras, a way to turn features on/off and have them stay in that state, a 120v outlet in the back, etc. It's an outback, people use these for outback things, dogs, cottages, trips, etc. Fix these things or lose your customer base. Once Subaru gets back in-line with what we like/want I'm back in. I always admire the OBW when I see one on the road and have owned many Subies in the past. I have had issues when slowing down. The cvt seems to be jerking the car to find the right gear to be in. When I talked to the dealership about it, I was told that it was due to the simulated gear shifts. Which I'm my opinion is stupid to have because its a cvt. The dealership said that to many people complained to Subaru that they didn't feel there car was shifting, so they added the simulated gears. My hope is that they add a normal automatic transition back as a future option, but I'm that is just a dream.

I moved the tab for auto vehicle hold to the main 1st page homescreen so it's right there above the auto stop/start so can quickly hit both during start-up. Totally agree both should remain as they were though. That being said, you can get an aftermarket module that keeps the auto start/stop on whatever setting you left it on. The other cameras are just about the same as other cars I have with cameras. 2. The auto on/off - I don't feel like it's overly rough or clunky when using, I leave it on and it seems to save me about 7/10's of a gallon of gas with each tank of gas. I recently sold a 3 series BMW, and that car had a clunky auto on/off, so much so I would turn it off every time I got in the car. 3. The max speed limit in my state is 65 MPH so I have never had my car up to 80-85 MPH and probably never will. 4. The 110v outlet comment - That makes sense, I have one of those in my Jeep JL Wrangler and it's nice to have, I've used it many times, Subaru should add this feature, it would be easy for them to do so. 5. The AVH - Totally agree, having to turn that on each time you get in the car is ridiculous. I moved that icon to the first page of my screen but even then, I always forget to turn it on. My friend has an OBD2 tool, I'm going to see if he can plug that in and find a setting to keep that on all of the time. The transmission "hunting for a gear" sensation you describe is the CV computer responding to minute precise changes in responses of terrain inclination, rolling resistance from surface changes like road crown variation and even wind direction changes in angle of attack, break in laminar airflow from passing or getting passed by a different sized vehicle, headwind, tailwind or any angle in between. Enjoy the ride and let it do its thing.

I am looking to become a 1st time Subaru owner. I'm currently trying to decide between the Outback and Forester. In all of my "research" - primarily YT videos and forums, these issues are my biggest concerns. I own a 2016 Sorento that I bought new in 2015. The camera on the Kia blows the Subaru camera out of the water. AND I currently have an AC outlet. I'm seriously concerned about losing that option. I am a home health nurse and use it almost daily because I use a tablet for work which inevitably needs recharging frequently. Also, I am a tactile person and hate the idea of touch screen for everything. Lastly, since I work out of my car, the lack of console storage space is quite off-putting. I know these are all small gripes, but make a huge difference. Despite this, every Subaru owner I've ever met speaks so highly of them that I want in on the secret. But the concerns you mention have me a little hesitant to pull the trigger. Hopefully Subaru hears the cries of their loyals and make some changes.
@roamingwithjosh10 ай бұрын
I've never had to use the car for your intended purpose, but even with all the gripes I genuinely enjoy this car. You can have the dealer add a 110 outlet if it's a must. Thanks for the comment and sorry if it wasn't more helpful!

Awesome upload man. Whoa...so there you go. Subaru turns a def ear to their own enthusiasts. I REALLY want the new Outback. At the same time my 2018 Crosstrek has Zero major issues. I do not like the outdated dash gauges and way to big screen as it gets in the way of controls mounted lower. It gets an easy 28 mpg. It actually sits an inch higher off the ground than my 2018 CRV. If I could take the gorgeous dash, gauges etc out of the Honda and bolt it all into a Subaru I would do it. That big of a difference. The Honda gauges are big clear and perfectly legible at all times. Never really thought much of the camera in my Crosstrek but now you have me seriously wondering about it.

My opinion is based on a 2022. Except for the 80-85 mph issue, which I haven’t paid attention to TBH, I agree with all of the other complaints. FYI, I got the software updated on my last maintenance visit and now have a AVH button right next to the Auto Stop button above the AC controls and I love it. Easy access when getting in the car drop off line at my child’s school every morning.

Interesting list. Here's my feedback for what it's worth. Caveat...I'm an old fart that used to drive a Jeep CJ for offroading and camping. 1. The camera. Yes the views suck. Part of the problem to me is the lens. They seem to be more fish-eye than a nice linear one. My 2018 Hyundai has a much better backup camera. And yes the back up at night is basically worthless. The front camera fish-eye makes it extremely difficult to judge distance since it is a distorted view. That being said refer to my first line. I'm an old fart. For backing up... I use mirrors and over the shoulder, especially in the OBW. 2. AC outlet??? You young folks are so spoiled!!!! 3. Auto Start/Stop. Totally agree. As a former programmer of user interfaces for control systems I know how easy it should be to change the function of ALL the buttons on the screen since they ALL are doing something in software hence the term "Soft button" . There are a lot of other small things that annoy me about some of the programmers choices one being the heated seats. When you have used them they stay on indefinitely even after turning the car off. All the cars I've had in the past that had seat heaters used a latching relay or a timer that when power was removed you had to push the button again to turn it on again. Hmmmmm. Why doesn't Subaru swap the functions of the seat heater and the Auto start/stop. Remember the setting for the start/stop and turn the seat heater off when shut down. 4. I haven't had an opportunity to drive 85 in a 65. fastest I've had mine was about 79. That being said I have experienced what acts like searching for a gear. I was driving up into the Sierra Nevada doing about 65-70 uphill above 2000 ft on the interstate and noticed it. I ended up using "manual" mode 5. No opinion

I have a 2021 Outback Limited XT. I LOVE it! I totally see where you're coming from (except for the camera - this is my 1st car with a backup camera and I think its pretty good compared to older camera equipped cars I've driven), but Subaru is NOT Jeep. JEEP = "Just Empty Every Pocket"! You have to pay for those extras. Subaru needs to keep their base and Premium models affordable - that's one of the reasons Subaru is popular as a VALUE brand (even if a lot of buyers go for higher trim levels). My biggest wish is that Subaru spend a few dollars more and give us a better/faster processor for the Touch-Screen. I agree about the 'Auto-Stop/Start' deactivation. If the Wilderness Editions continue to sell, hopefully Subaru will add the AC outlet in the future. Hopefully they will hear you! Keep up the good work!

My list for Gen 7 1. Bring back H6, ideally simple, or with Turbo, and/or Turbo + Hybrid, but at least give us option of a simple natural aspire engine 2. Real 7 Automatic Transmission and Manual 3. Better Front Windshield material and manufacturing, double ply glass all around, and make the front door window one piece, lots of other manufacturers achieve that as it reduce noise from that tiny cut off glass 4. Less plastic cladding, keep it like Audi A6 Allroad, but with option for people who wants to off-road 24/7, Gen 4, Gen 5 and early Gen 6 had the right balance of Plastic Cladding But recent wheel arc plastic cladding is way too much 5. Air adaptive suspension like Audi A6 Allroad and offer factory lift kit for those who wants higher ground clearance 6. Factory installed tow hitch with brake controller (Australian Market Offers this option) 7. Bigger and stronger alternator and 2nd battery, and two regular 110V outlet (one in the front console area) and one in the truck area 8. Additional LED on the Tailgate so can illuminate the ground when open (This option are being offered in JDM, APAC, Australia and Europe) 9. Remove factory crossbar and keep it like Gen 4 in JDM/APAC/Europe and Gen 5 Touring in the US 10. Passenger Retractable Window Shade, along with Cargo area side corner window shade for privacy and security 11. 360 Birdview Camera 12. HUD option, even Mazda 3 has some basic HUD, and/or change the cluster display to full digital and make it more useful, like iPhone pitch by Steve Jobs, analog fixed index needle can’t do much 13. Panoramic Roof option

I'm hoping for future cars they can add the AC vented front seats and also add an extra camera in the rear that we could view in the rear view mirror like how Toyota has their option for that. Considering most OBW owners are landing up their camping gear or whatever in the back which would make the standard rear view mirror ineffective to see behind us while driving.

Secondly, all the other gripes you as an Outback Wilderness owner with cameras and AC power outlets I am 100% on board with you. I also believe that the turbo engine option should have been an option offered to Forester Wilderness fans that are enthusiasts should have the option of choosing. Subaru used to be known for their unique look and rally blood. Now it seems they are trying to be like everyone else. They've lost their unique stand out heritage. The new Forester looks like an old Ford explorer. Breaks my heart. They took away my favorite option in the Forester which was a manual transmission. They've killed the turbo. They seem to be killing the spirit of their true enthusiasts in every way throughout their line of vehicles slowly and it's very sad to see. I've hunted around in the Subaru line up for a few years. Good points. I noticed the cameras are low Resolution and an easy upgrade for Subaru. Start-Stop feature as informed by mechanics provides minute fuel efficiency BUT the lack of lubrication while off and also the continual use of the starter = costly long term maintenance $$ repairs. My old 1/2 ton had this and there are thousands of documented issues with that technology, which is an EPA satisfying gimmick just like cylinder deactivation which causes catastrophic failure after approx 100K miles in the valve+piston area that is $thousands$ to repair, wiping out fuel gains. You mentioned cruising at ~85 mph, on hwys. I presume. I do not, we’re allowed up to 74 on some hwys. without a ticket and I’m satisfied with that, but if what you say happens that’s unacceptable with that turbo engine power (in Europe some are allowed to cruise at very high speeds and so they must be experiencing the same). Yes, Subaru please listen like mfrs. like JEEP. And make them more sexy please, not so quirky, yet I’ll accept them anyway. But let’s get more power for base engines; way too woussy. If they incorporated a gear transmission (reliable one at that), that would be a game changer as well. 👍🏼

I have a new 2024 Outback Wilderness with about 4,000 miles on it. 1. You’re dead on with the camera resolution and nighttime performance. It’s circa 2000 video camera quality front and rear. Even the cheapest new cars out there tend to have better backup camera quality than this. It’s usable, but just barely. 2. Auto Start Stop has more to do with emissions than it does with saving gas. It’s considered part of the emissions system of vehicles. Thus it likely will never been permanently defeatable without some sort of modification like the available start/stop module. It wouldn’t be so bad if the restarts didn’t feel like I was being rearended by someone every time. I’ve never understood the AVH, though, or why anyone would ever use it. I’ve had several vehicles with it and every time I use it I am dumbfounded that some people find any use for it. But to each their own. 3. “Gear Hunting” is definitely an issue in my 2024. Of course it has a CVT, so these are fake gear shifts, but the programming of the CVT appears to be nonsensical. Mine seems to “shift” randomly even when driving at a steady speed down the interstate at anything over 60mph. It will randomly shift up or down for no reason, causing the whole car to lurch and buck. That’s probably too strong a description, but it is definitely noticeable. I also notice it’s impossible to come to a smooth stop at a stop sign sometimes because it feels as though the transmission is downshifting. Feels very similar to warped rotors, but it happens only some of the time. Both issues are sufficiently severe that I am going to ask about it at my next trip to the dealership. 4. Subaru seems to be slanting its enthusiast division away from performance driving towards offroad performance. Thus the Wilderness trims in now three different models. The sports car market is not as robust as it was in, say, the 1990s, and the overlanding/offroading market is on fire. I suspect that the next generation Ascent will have a Wilderness trim as well. I wouldn’t be surprised if the next generation Outback comes with an even more offroad capable setup than this first attempt. At this point, Toyota mostly controls Subaru with something like 45% ownership. You notice the BRZ/AE86 shared model and the new electric only model. I wouldn’t be surprised if Subaru becomes effectively a sub-brand of Toyota that can be a little quirkier but not really directly compete with Toyota’s sales leaders.
@roamingwithjosh11 ай бұрын
I really appreciate this. What you said about the breaking really just set in with me. on my 22 I had that issue where it felt like the rotors were warped and I honestly just assumed that was the problem. I completely agree with the off-road market taking over, just wish they would have kept a manual in the STI for those people who really loved that car.

If you put your OBW in manual mode and use the paddle shifters is it still noticeable then? It would have to be a programming issue given the CVT transmission. Your Korean competitors (Hyundai and Kia appear to listen to reviews of their products on social media/customers and make small improvements on a faster timetable. Some things have to wait for the next refresh but for the most part little irritating things are addressed far quicker. Known issues must be addressed quicker or Subaru will lose loyal customers to others.

How can a vehicle designed to go off pavement not have real skid plates and protection. We shouldn't have to go off market after spending $40000 plus.

I have a 22 OBW. I was at the dealership getting an oil change the other day, and I was browsing the 24s while I waited. They were offering a 1.9% and I honestly started to consider trading mine for a 24. I have a white one, and I want to switch it up for blue or grey. Looking over the new models, I was happy to see the better HK sound system, but besides that, I ultimately decided against it due to the lack of new innovations/ improvements. Overall, I've enjoyed my 22 OBW after driving nearly 70k miles, but I agree with all the points you're making.

I'm with you! One of the reasons I decided to get a 24 was the 1.9%

I just picked up my '24 Outback Touring. Everything you said about the '24 Wilderness applies to my car as well (although I haven't been up to 80mph yet), plus this: there is no speed-sensitive automatic volume adjustment in the audio system. I can't believe it! My understanding is that this has to do with the Harman-Kardon head unit, and that '24 models without it DO have the automatic volume feature. I just don't understand why they would allow this.

Great segment! All the reasons you mention, plus the fact I’m not a fan of Subaru’s current infotainment system, is why I’m holding onto my 2014 Forester XT, even though I’d consider adding an Outback to the family. My 2014 has a powerful turbo engine, actual buttons for all functions, a crappy radio but still better than Subaru’s current infotainment system, no auto stop/start nonsense, and cameras that are about the same quality as the 2024 model which is sad!

Yeah definitely do not upgrade. I wish I would have kept my 2016. The infotainment is an embarrassment.

Wish they put the memory seats in the Wilderness. My wife and I have very different seating positions so it is a little annoying having to adjust the seat just so every time knowing there is an option for memory seat that they just don’t offer in the Wilderness.

Wondering if anyone else finds that people talking on the phone with them in the Wilderness trim in particular complain about how much road noise/wind noise there is? I am always reluctant to make a phone call because everyone complains... is my car defective?
@FunkySpunky9111 ай бұрын
I have never had anybody complain about my 2024 OBW phone call quality. I do make many calls on it and haven't had a problem. Now if somebody is using their speakerphone on their cell, I have a hard time hearing it through the speakers of the OBW.

Have 2024 Outback turbo. Have same tranny issue with hunting for gears above 70, sometimes at like speeds.Auto stop is a joke. Hold should be on all the time. Too much crappy black plastic. Need true 360 cameras and yes the current cameras are terrible. Also have Murano with 80000 miles on original brakes. Seats are GREAT. Subaru needs to copy those seats. Murano driving 75-80 gets 27 mpg with a V6 and Subaru gets 21 with a 4 cyl. Murano CVT has been flawless and doesn't hunt gears. Adaptive headlights on Subaru don't adapt to anything.
@joelmeriwether348011 ай бұрын
Also heated steering wheel is barely warm and not all the way around. My Murano is hot and all the way around. My AWD is as good as Subaru and I can compare as I have had 9 Subarus.

I think we all needed this alternate point of view from you, thankyou. ( The auto stop start feature I believe is more for pollution when many cars are sitting in traffic rather than fuel savings) I also run an inverter on my Subaru with a deep discharge battery, the CCA is not as good , but the staying power for inverter use is there, don't know if this pulling a lot of 110 hurts the alternator though, I heard it might. My deep discharge battery has lived under my hood for about 8 years now.

Auto start/stop only makes sense on mild hybrid vehicles. It does save quite some gas on my cx90 but I believe mild hybrid plays such an important role - engine stops when I'm going downhill and there's no vibration issue in that use case.

24 OBW first time Subaru owner. I see your point with the camera. It absolutely is outdated. I enjoy your videos and watched alot before buying so I’m going to pay it back by giving you a tip. Photographer to photographer🙋♀️ use that pesky auto start /stop thing and the brake hold thing when your out shooting. Pretty nice to slide up on an owl and have the car go silent and the car staying stopped wild you snatch your lens and pivot in your seat. The rest of the time I turn that stuff on but handy for this wildlife photographer . I do not like the CVT transmission. The reason is because I’m a mnt chick and when I’m driving down my icy canyon road I like to just put it in a low gear and not use my brakes. The manual mode with this in a lower gear gives you some drag but not nearly enough. No I do not want to x mode to use that drag all the time, maybe on occasion, but not on the daily. I am also already tired of hand washing and drying this thing. That said I had and still do have my 06 4Runner with 260+ thousand miles. Never let me down. Paint is still good. Purrs like a kitten! So the Subaru has a lot to live up to. Thanks for your videos!

I think pretty much every vehicle today comes with a start-stop system. It's less of a problem for me in my Skoda, since with manual transmission I can just depress the clutch to get the engine to start, or hold the clutch if I don't want it to shut down. The starters and batteries are supposed to be beefed up to handle it.
@roamingwithjosh10 ай бұрын
I hope those components are beefed up to handle it. Thanks for the comment!
