I'm a Subaru tech. Been a tech for over 2 years. I see 3.6L Subaru's all the time. And never seen them with engine problems. They are the most reliable engines Subaru made in my opinion. I've seen plenty of them with 230-260k on the clock and still running strong. Many times they are untouched for 200k miles. With that said, they are the worst to work on. No working room whatsoever, the engine is crammed in there.

I have a 2018 that I love. I’m 66 and was a big muscle car fan back in the day. The WRX is faster 0-60 than a ‘70 Hemi Cuda and it corners like a go cart. I’ve got 55,000 miles with zero problems. I’m thinking the extended warranty was a waste of money. It’s the most fun car I’ve ever owned.

My 2012 has an e-tune and a catless exhaust, and still is on the stock motor and turbo at 165k miles. still going strong. I can tell that the previous owners treated it right and didn't rag on it. The new WRX's do interest me, though I'm not convinced all the new tech in their cars, or any car for that matter, is something that I would want. Seems like it just increases complexity (and cost) and decreases reliability.

Drop in panel air filter & cat back exhaust are fine without a tune, however. Front & rear sway bars & end links do a ton for keeping the car flat in turns and improving handling feel. Subaru has removed the manual transmission option for all but TWO models, the WRX/STi and the BRZ. Subaru had a press release stating that 9% of vehicle sales were manual transmission cars. Most manufacturers have gone the same route. The flip side is that nee automatic transmissions are CVTs and almost no nee vehicles come with a conventional gear box.

I've got a WRX that is the same generation as this, and based on your description, pretty much that same equipment. They come from the factory with Summer only tires. I got through several Winters in Maryland (state just South of PA) fine on those. Then again, I love driving in snow and have always driven manual transmissions, so I may have had some advantages. That said, when those tires wore down I replaced them with a set of all seasons which handle snow a lot better. I know dedicated snow tires would be even better, but I think that would be overkill for this AWD vehicle in Maryland conditions. PS. I've done the math, and the Subaru road computer over-estimates mpg by about 2. So when the car says you are getting 28mpg, you are really only getting 26.

Just sold my 2016 WRX. Made 377awhp on the dyno on and ethanol flex fuel tune. I loved the car. I may regret getting rid of it as it was the most fun practical daily driven car. It had 132k miles on it when I sold it a few weeks ago. Bought it in June 2017 with 10k miles on it. 6 years of daily driving fun. You absolutely need to maintain these cars for them to last but treat them right and they'll treat you right. Two sets of wheels for winter and summer tires, and it ripped up the roads no matter what condition. 44mpg? Even when the car was stock I couldn't get over 30 granny driving the thing.

VA (chassis) WRXs came with “summer” sport tires, not all seasons or “regular” tires, which is why the first thing I did when I bought mine was buy a spare set of wheels with Blizzaks. I have all seasons that came on my STI and they were just fine in the snow. Just don’t drive in the snow on the stock summers unless you want to die.

Got a 2012 Legacy 3.6 R and just replaced the torque converter. Only has 65k miles and Subaru said it's kind of unusual to have that problem. Other than that no issues here, drives great and has just enough tech to keep it "human". Still has traditional auto transmission not CVT! Kind of sucks how too much technology actually ruins cars and driving experience.

Just bought a 2011 wrx premium hatchback two months ago with 119,000 miles on it. Most people know that people around my age destroy most of these cars with wrongfully modding them or putting mods with no tune etc. But I had a great find with the first owner an second owner lightly modding this car and actually tuning it. These are great cars and the people that blow them up give Subarus a bad rep. Just like most other cars take care of it well and it will take care of you. I love my wrx hatch that I’m thinking of getting a sti later in the future.

What we have driving off the lot is the end result of that data and decisions made accordingly. I don’t understand why people act as though cars are supposed to be modifiable without breaking. If you want it so you have to spend the money and do it right.
