Scotty doesn't want people to buy Subaru's because he dosn't want to change the spark plugs.
@jakegarrett81095 жыл бұрын
He should tell them to buy an RX-8 then. I can change my spark plugs without even opening the hood, its super easy! (all from 1 side of the wheel well, turn your wheel left, walk 2 steps over to your drivers side wheel, and whammo! Spark plugs easily accessible from there). Similar procedure for changing headlights, though that's actually really annoying (mostly because headlights shouldn't be burning out on cars that are less than 30 years old). I just wish the oil change was as easy as my 1987 Mercedes 300D, you could change the oil wearing a suit and not worry about getting dirty. Drain bolt was right in the front under the bumper, and the oil filter was a canister type, so it sits in a cup basically and doesn't spill oil everywhere like a typical upside down pop can looking ones every other car seems to use (no idea why the normal ones exist, they get oil everywhere!). That car was a tank... It would be decent for rally cross if you change just a couple minor things (I'd take out the 200 pound electric luxury seats and carpets, but leave the wood trim around the radio, it looks super nice). You'll also probably average 20 mpg during the race (I was making like 27.5 mpg doing burnouts and drifts around town, I had some almost slick tires I wanted to wear down since I was replacing them, so might as well have some fun!). Very reliable and easy to work on (the highly priased W123 chassy is well known for a reason, it really is some impressive engineering, its not even that heavy. For the 80's, light weight and durable was impossible and didn't exist, yet this car did! Its about the weight of a typical equivalent modern car, even with the insanely heavy seats, so easy weight reduction!)

@bcraig155 жыл бұрын
I think the NHTSA might have forced this issue by deeming it a safety recall. Consumers tend to get lucky when this happens because it becomes a mandatory repair instead of a "product quality" issue where the customer has to cover the bill. Safety recalls involve issues where something can fail in a way to endanger the occupants or public. Even engine failure issues don't always make safety recalls, but this one did because valve/valve-spring failures can grenade a cylinder (valve drops at the wrong time on interference engines) and cause the engine to seize, which might suddenly lock up the rear wheels and result in a loss of control.

Scotty, these are the exact reasons that I will not own ANY of the newer cars and trucks. The newest car that I own is a 1999 Olds Alero with the 3400 V-6 and a 4 spd automatic trans. My sister bought this car new when she worked for a new car dealer so I know the car's history. I had to replace the engine after that stupid cooling pipe that runs beneath the intake manifold blew out and dumped a crap load of coolant into the engine. My mechanic told me that he could rebuild the engine, but couldn't give much in the way of a warrantee. He advised me to allow him to search for a low mileage replacement that had not been "cracked". That's the way we went and it's been a good decision. The car has right at 97,000 miles on it and the engine has about 121,000. The engine had 118,000 on it when it was installed. My son asked me why don't I sell the car and get something else and I told him that I KNOW this car and will keep what I know as opposed to one that I do NOT know. About 6 months ago we replaced the starter and solenoid when the solenoid crapped out. You cannot buy just the solenoid, but have to get the starter AND solenoid. That package costed $250 through the local Chevy dealer and my son had things swapped out in about 20 minutes. My other 2 vehicles are a 1975 Mercury Cougar XR-7, with 400 big block and automatic trans and a 1981 Jeep Renegade CJ-7, with a 4.2 liter AMC straight 6 and a 4 speed transmission and 2 spd transfer case. As long and NAPA stays in business, I should be able to keep my "old iron" on the road. Here's wishing you and yours a Blessed Day and I really enjoy your videos and the way you tell things as they are and not how people WISH they were.

Our dealership is booked till the end of May with takata passenger air bag recalls, the warranty pays good on the legacy and outback not so much on the others. Also doing this valve spring replacement daily, I think I’ve done at least five. As far as Subaru being junk I disagree, the newer chain drive motors are way better than the older belt ones that would go 100k before the head gaskets start leaking. The reason that Toyota is using a Subaru engine is actually pretty cool. The car was designed by two friends who work for Toyota and Subaru respectively. Toyota approached their designers and asked "What do you want to make?" and the Toyota friend was talking about this with his Subaru friend and they thought about the MX-5 (Miata) and decided they'd love to make a driver's car. One perfect for twisty roads like in Japan or California. Toyota man presented this idea to Toyota and they said "No, it's not the financial climate for it." and his idea was dismissed. That made him want it more so he worked with his friend in secret designing the car. After looking through eachother's companies' respective parts catalogues they decided to start with the boxer engine in order to keep a low hood and low centre of gravity. Nothing Toyota was making was small enough or short enough to allow for the car's profile. After that they got to task making a go-kart version of the car in their spare time until they eventually snuck it on to the Toyota test track and called their seniors. One by one, the senior execs took the car around the test track and returned with a smile on their face, they were convinced at the very least to investigate the idea of a collaboration. After months of discussions, it was agreed that they would jointly develop the car, but Toyota would do the lion's share of the manufacturing as Subaru couldn't afford to re-jig their factory to meet the volumes required. A deal was struck, that Toyota would make 1 Subaru for every 10 Toyotas off the line. This is also why the BRZ has a number on the centre console and the 86/FRS/WhateverThanksAmericaJustUseEveryoneElsesNamesInsteadOfMakingUpSixForTheSameCar doesn't. So in short, Toyota didn't have a low enough motor for the car and because the car was primarily designed by two friends from either company it was a joint venture from the start.

This is a bunch of nonsense. You're bashing Subaru because they are trying to fix their mistakes instead of sweeping them under the rug. They didn't have to do these recalls. BUT, I will agree that Toyota shouldn't have used Subaru engines, their techs were not specifically trained on how to work on them or how to properly clean off and reapply the gasket material.(I'm guessing that is changing after this) The going hypothesis on why the engines are blowing up is that old gasket material is left in the engine after reassembly that clogs up oil passages... then boom goes the engine. Subaru has specific instructions in their recall on how to properly clean the old gasket off and prevent this from happening.

To be clear, the recall only affects 2013 model years of the BRZ and the Scion FR-S. The Toyota 86 came along (in the US) in 2017 and is unaffected, as are 2014+ Subarus and Scions. Also, the engine failures are almost all from Scions, very few Subarus, like 15 to 1 (or higher) ratio of Scion to Subarus who have engine failure after the valve spring recall is performed. Toyota technicians simply aren't trained properly on how to work on the Subaru engines, obviously. And this procedure requires precision work, again, obviously, since even Subaru has buggered up a few. The Subaru failures really aren't the story here, it's the Scion failures that made headlines.
@Oldbmwr100rs5 жыл бұрын
Any dealer tech worth his salt can properly repair a subaru engine. They're actually easier to work on than many other engines. Now seeing as it's mostly the scions that have this problem, I wonder if it's due to Toyota calling on certain internal changes to the engines built by Subaru for them. You can bet that Supra engine from BMW will have many of it's own special components, which is very common in the business.
@keithr-5 жыл бұрын
The numbers say that Toyota techs pretty much suck at working on the Subaru engines. There are no differences between the engines used in the different models. The design and engineering was a collaboration, though it's essentially a boxer 2.0 with Toyota's GDI system bolted on, but the production of the engines is identical.

Just putting this out there. Many car companies have NOT recalled critical safety issues because it may be more profitable to them. Recall rate may not be a good indicator of quality. Law suits I think are far too late and far too plentiful, and have been for years on end.

There's a lot of FUD going on in this video. I doubt my comment will be seen by many, but I'm going to clear up some of the fear mongering done in this video. I recently bought a nice 2014 BRZ so of course I immediately went looking for information on whether or not my vehicle had a recall, when I discovered something interesting: Only the 2013 or older model BRZ/FRS/86's are affected by the valve spring issue. I didn't look into Subaru's entire lineup, but since their entire fleet is based on the same engine, I'd assume this generally holds true for all of them as well. This recall was also issued as of November 2018, so even then that means all these cars being recalled have been driving around for at least 6 years without blowing up. It's likely Subaru only took notice of the issue recently as the springs are just now starting to give out. It's still not an excusable defect mind you, but other manufacturers have had issues that were threatening the car the moment it drove off the lot, including this guy's lord and savior Toyota. Every manufacturer in the history of ever has had to issue insane recalls at some point, let's not kid ourselves, but that doesn't mean it immediately makes the brand an unreliable POS. So for anyone out there looking to buy a newish (2014-present) Subaru: No, the car won't explode in your face. This guy is just trying to make everything seem worse than it is (hence the deliberate exclusion of model years the recall actually affects) either to drive views or because he just REALLY hates Subaru's for some reason. After having watched this video, I don't trust anything this guy says really. He doesn't outright lie, but he has a knack for twisting the truth. If you're interested in a particular vehicle, Subaru or not, I would suggest doing research on the specific year/make/model yourself than taking whatever he says at face value.

Subaru USED to make good cars. I'm not so confident in saying they still make good cars. They've defaulted to using that damn 2.5L H4 that's been blowing head gaskets since its inception in 1995. If a manufacturer hasn't resolved a major design flaw after over 20yrs, it's just not worth trusting the company. Their 1.8L and 2.2L H4 engines back in the early 90s were extremely good engines.

Valve springs today last longer in part because the engine management system has a multi stage rpm limiter. Usually it’s around 4000 rpm in park or neutral and at redline in gear. This keeps the engine from floating the valves when there safe rpm is exceeded. This greatly extends the life in vehicles that are abused

Huh thats funny. I have a 2011 legacy 3.6r with 90k and have never had an issue. My wife has a 06' matrix with 172k and has had the ac condenser clog, intake manifold gasket leak, engine mount vibration, starting issues with new batteries and a tested alternator(that was fine eventually this problem went away and I never found the reason) extremely harsh ride even with new oem struts. But toyota makes better cars. Oh I think I had to go in for 2 recalls with my car where they offered me a loaner car so... I don't get why people freak out about these simple recalls. Like the wiper motor? You are going to complain about that? He doesn't even explain that that recall is because the motor overheats when snow clogs up the windows and the wipers cannot retract all the way. Also people say that with the Subaru I have there have been engine stalling under hard braking. Well isn't there only like one scenario where you should brake hard and that is a potential accident. Drive your car right and maintain it right and it will return the favor. Shoot I have witnessed high mileage fiat-dodge-chrysler cars just because people take care of them and those are all notorious for being crappy cars.

Similar thing happened with furnaces that pulled the air for combustion from the front of the furnace. If the furnace rm was also the laundry rm, the chemicals in the dryer sheets would mix withe the combustion Air and wrot out the heat exchangers. Try telling that to a customer. The dryer sheet companies have changed their formula so that doesn't happen anymore
@ReflectedMiles5 жыл бұрын
As surprising and weird as that cause seems, one of the only parts of the chemical industry that remains almost completely unregulated is fragrances, even though we know that skin absorption and airborne contaminants in lungs can be deadly. I think consumers imagine that the FDA or some federal agency is watching over what is produced that they buy, but I know of a situation where a worker was taken to a hospital with a severe reaction to a heated candle-wax product (non-burning) and the manufacturer would not disclose the ingredients to the emergency-room physicians saying that they had the right not to as they were exempted by federal law. (Obviously their industry lobbyists do some amazing work.) That gave me a pretty good idea about their level of concern for people's lives. Whether it's for skin or lungs or brake switches, we need to know what's in that stuff that we use on and around us all the time and what the risks are.
