Went the same route. Was downsizing from Toyota Sequoia and started looking for a decent used 4 Runner, Highlander or RAV 4. All the decent Toyotas we found were nearly same price as new. The ones that weren’t overpriced had way to many miles to be comfortable with. Ended up getting a new Subaru Forester for less than any of the the used Toyotas. Now we’re shopping for a 2nd Subaru.

I almost bought one, but the updated crash test results made me nervous, so I decided the Outback was a good work-around. Same reliable vehicle, more cargo space, decent MPG, some are assembled in Japan and some in Indiana (but the engine is still made in Japan), and the price of the base with its standard features (fog lights!), rivaled the price of a Crosstrek in a higher trim.

I had to look this one up b/c I was practically a "crash-test dummy" in a bad accident 45mph to 0 with a Crosstrek and I left the scene unscathed outside a developing bruise from the seatbelt. i have a 2022 manual crosstrek and i really like it. the manual far exceeds the EPA rating for the manual, the EPA doesn't rate the manual transmission fairly. i live in NYS and i run snow tires. it does 2 things. it protects my factory wheels from turning to crap and it provides better traction on ice and snow. i use fluid film to keep the vehicle in good shape, it really does prevent the rust if applied annually

I bought a 2019 Crosstrek Limited new in 2018. When only a few months old started making a high-pitched sound at freeway speeds. They replaced the transmission. Now I'm having issues with the fuel injectors. They did a multi-hour deep clean process to remove carbon which is a known problem as Subarus have direct fuel injection systems instead of port but that has not taken care of the problem. May have to replace the fuel injectors. Car only has 50,000 miles. Also had them replace the battery when it went dead for no reason three different times. Also had intermittent issues with the left door lock not completely engaging or disengaging. And, the map reading light has gone on for no reason in the middle of the night and no doubt contributed to the issues with battery going dead.

I drive a 23yo 5.0i V8 Ford sedan whilst my wife has a 2021 Subaru Impreza Premium. Whilst I love the big torque/hp rear wheel drive V8 & 5 speed Tremec, the Subaru is an amazing car for A to B driving with supreme safety. The Eyes Forward Safety tech and Lane Correction saved me recently as I was stupidly driving home from a medial procedure that had an unknown side effect. My Ford would have been destroyed had I chosen to drive it instead of the Subaru. Whilst it is a N/A model with CTV, driven in its sweet spot is rewarding and rarely lacking. My only issue is the 50-60 micron factory paint which chips easily, regardless of the ceramic coating I had applied by a professional detailer friend. I am very tempted to sell my Ford V8 and buy a turbo AWD, but......

Being a “sloth” and “struggling going uphill” are both incredible understatements!! Bought a 2014/15 (can’t remember) for my mother (used) for incredibly cheap because she needed something with AWD for driving in the country during the winter, but it was the cheapest feeling vehicle I’ve driven since my first car (an 84’ VW rabbit GTI)! The lack of power combined with the useless CVT made it feel like driving a snowmobile but the lack of body panel, floor, and windshield insulation made it so you had to max out the “premium” (hahaha) audio volume just to get rid of the headache from wind and road noise! Thankfully (in a way) she wrecked it and we replaced it with a ford escape. The escape was very similar pricing but material and build quality are second to none by comparison (and it’s fast as hell)!

It is indeed very sadly getting increasingly hard for us manual car enjoyers to find nice, and especially new cars. All that because of the wilful laziness of the general population to either keep driving manual, or to learn it. It's abhorrently stupid too, when you think about how much more expensive an automatic transmission is to fix or replace, and how unreliable CVTs are known to be, despite being in almost the majority of modern cars today. I have a 2009 Toyota Venza with push button start/smart key. One night last week after a torturous 12 hour shift at 3 am , my key fob battery was so dead , it would not open the doors. I did manage to get in the car with the emergency "smart key", but the car would not start ,"No key detected" warning light came on . I touched the fob off the push button while pressing it and it finally started.

Subaru has long been known for their AWD. But FWD is nothing new for Subaru, even in the US. They went to all AWD sometime in the 90s. Prior to that most of their cars were FWD. I know because I bought one new in 1989. And most of the cars they had on the lot at the time were FWD.

I found a previously leased (34 000 miles) 2021 Canadian exclusive Sport trim 6-speed manual model. It comes with everything the US Limited trim has, except the stupid (and likely pricy to fix if or when it inevitably fails in some way) Eyesight system, unfortunately no 2.5L engine (big shame), and no Harman Kardon sound system. Cloth seats, which is a plus in my eyes. I LOVE the sound of the boxer engine, and the car is a lot of fun drive around in. Overall, it's a huge upgrade over my base trim level 2014 Mazda3 6-speed, which I roughed up over 6 years of ownership. Only things I wish were better about the Crosstrek are the gear ratios, the clutch, and the rev hang. Other than that, I think it's the perfect Canadian winter commuter 😄
