Great review thank you. Couple of comments: The apparent loss of power, I think is due to ‘heat soak’ which is a feature of top-mounted intercoolers. The intake temperature is monitored and the timing is adjusted accordingly to prevent det. My 2002 STi (which I sold many years ago) was prone to this. Obviously the solution is to change to a front mounted IC but not many will want to meddle with a 70k special edition. The FA engine (specifically the FA24) will almost certainly power the next generation STi and this should be worth waiting for.

Great review guys - and you totally understand that the S209 is a complete balanced package, for a connected driving experience. Sure it is possible and cheaper to get a base STI and add power, but you forget the suspension, transmission, tuning, brakes, chassis, body, wheels, tyres and the rest of the package. I'm an S208 owner, and know that there is a world of difference between the regular STI and the S208, as a few others who have driven both have also written. FYI - Just driving highways and around town in the 'SI' mode, I'm getting close to 27 mpg, but if I take it up into the mountains, go to Sports# and thread it around the bends at between 4-8,000 rpm, it's down to 15 mpg!

@jonathonmiller23092 жыл бұрын
First of all, wrx and sti variants carry the same suspension and brakes. The only difference is the tranny and more power. Second of all it drives the same, it’s just faster. Third and lastly, the wrx actually has more aftermarket parts and upgrades than the sti variant, for most of the time. Yes it’s still a good car, but the engine is the main selling point of it because no other car company has produced this many flat-4 sells ever. If you know Subaru you know they’re known for the flat-4, wrc, and symmetrical awd. (It’s actually 60-40 but oh well)
@ytrabbithole68932 жыл бұрын
@@jonathonmiller2309 That is incorrect, and I’m not sure what your point is. The STI has a hydraulic steering rack, versus an electrically assisted rack in the WRX. The STI has 6 piston brakes, while the WRX does not. The STI has a more advanced AWD system with limited slip differentials, versus open differentials on the WRX. The transmission in the STI has a mechanical linkage, which has a better shift feel versus a cable linkage in the WRX. I was just saying that I personally noticed all those things that added up to a more enjoyable driving experience in the STI versus the WRX I owned at the time. I just felt that they were similar in straight line performance, and that the engine was in need of updating.

Bimini Bob which Focus trim? As a former 2019 STI owner, I test drove a lot of the competitors, and honestly enjoyed the ST more than the RS. The RS is an awesome car in its own right, but it was hard to justify what they wanted for it and it would beat you to death. I’d have gone with the ST but that particular one was as base as base could get, and unfortunately the Focus had already been discontinued when I was shopping. Ultimately, the STI won out as far as overall package; fun, functional, and resale value (which unfortunately, and I guess fortunately, already experienced)

For the price, I do find myself catering more towards the gt350 or even the r. With that said, I found a newer appreciation and understanding for this car after watching this video. There are certain things that this car can do that the 350 can’t like behave well on the road and be more daily friendly. Yes, you can always tune the crap out of the engine of a normal sti and get more performance than the s209 for a significantly lower price, but that can be said for most manufacturers. But that’s not the point of this car, the point was to push the engine as far as they can and still make it work cohesively with the rest of the car’s chassis and suspension as well as be able to offer a warranty on it.

I think the EJ motor is certainly outdated, but it's not a bad motor. Keep it maintained, pop on an intake, exhaust, tune it, and don't touch the internals and it'll make an easy low 300s for hp and torque. However, it is still disappointing that a new, $70k driver oriented car has virtually the same engine and power levels as my 2008 Legacy (after some mods, of course).

@07wrxtr14 жыл бұрын
Cobb tuning made a night/day difference on mine. Get yours to Tim Bailey! I don't however miss all the shortcomings of the vehicle: Understeer for centuries, regardless of how much money you spend on the suspension, it just does not work on public roads if you want comfort and compliance; The wrx 5 speed transmission is a time bomb, mine blew up; The rear differential is garbage unless you get the sti version. The requirement of a better clutch/flywheel = driveability issues depending upon wear, temp, etc. It's ALL over the place. Heat soak, so pick your battles wisely. Road noise/tin can on wheels feel. Any changes = pay for a dyno tune or roll the dice. I do miss aspects of the raw driving experience, the bottom end tq of a 20g turbo, all the sounds, etc but I moved to a 370z, yeah... most would say that's a downgrade, but I gained back better handling/braking and consistency after changing the front swaybar, better tires and ditched the stupid factory alignment, as well as just a lot less money spent in constantly buying new tires, clutch, brakes, etc. The wrx is a perpetual money pit (seriously, go look at Perrins house in Oregon = there's where all your money went because Subaru refuses to do it correctly the first time) if you like driving hard and pushing things. The Z takes abuse well, but it does have it's own issues (needs factory oil cooler). There are times I'm bored of the car, then there are times I fall in love with it again. I may get a wrx sti that someone has put their life savings into and have to let go because of divorce/economy, and I think the 400z should be a good all around daily. We'll see!

Also be careful, the transmission tends to have issues (hard to make quick shifts) if you're trying to make fast shifts like in a race situation (especially trying to shift into 5th gear around 95 mph) under full acceleration. There's some flaw in the 2004s transmission, because so many guys were having the same issue back in the day. It really pissed me off. It only did it under wide open throttle acceleration.Normal driving it was fine. But at the track, it did it all the time (refused an upshift at high rpms - below redline)

Now I know why I love the sports cars of the 1960's so much. They were meant to be driven and to form a man + machine connection in every way. Now, I really don't know what's going on with modern sports cars today. They're heavily computer controlled and done so to preserve fragile egos and make you not look stupid in front of everyone when you try to floor it in a straight line or a modest corner. 💯% agree with all the points you both made. Sports cars are meant to be driven. We need a manufacturer that will honor this going forward or at least people to buy these cars to be enjoyed.
