Both are amazing characters and you could make the argument for both. I prefer Subaru as a character and prefer his writing more since I read the web novel for Re:Zero. Still both are among the best in fiction. I just personally place Subaru above Thorfinn for my favorite character.

I recently read volume 23 here in Brazil and compared it to Subaru arc 1 or Volume 1. Subaru Amnesia vs Subaru arc 1: Strength: Subaru arc 6 (Has a body trained by Subaru Natsuki for 1 year) Defense: Both? (Both do not have any special defense powers) Stamina: Subaru arc 6 (His trained body gave him more stamina) Reflexes: Subaru arc 6 (Dodged a giant worm when trying to flee through the desert, although Subaru volume 1 narrowly dodged a limited Elsa) Habillityes: Both. Hax: Subaru arc 6 (depends on whether you consider Meili to have experience of murder in Subaru's mind after reading her book of the dead). Intelligence: Subaru arc 6 (It was able to understand the RBD faster than Subaru arc 1. Subaru Amnesiac was also able to better understand the bad situation and assimilate the points faster). Battle IQ: I don't know for sure. Winner: Subaru Arc 6 (From volume 23) when they publish Volume 24 and 25 i compare whit Arc 2 and maybe arc 3. In my opinion, Season 2 Subaru is too much. Thorfin´s "backstory" took 24 episodes. So I´m not sure if it is a fair comparison but i agree. The thing I disagree on are dialogues, which was the reason I continued RZ although VS have them more consistent. And also parallels the number of them in RZ are insane, but parallels doesn´t always matter that much. Complexity as well Subaru´s character is much more harder to understand for regular audience.
