If I'm honest it's probably like a 10-way tie, but if I really HAVE to pick, I'll say Saltasaurus because it borders on plausible coloring while simultaneously being a super fun food reference, and unlike you when I was a kid I always thought the herbivorous dinos were cooler.

Shonisaurus. My favourite animals you drew are Tanystropheus and Deinocheirus, but my favourite illustration was definitely "Penguin". It really benefits from being in your comfort zone of "sea creature". Cute blubbery body, too.

3 things: -Albertadromeus may not have been as boring as you thought. It is an Orodromine, a subfamily which also contains the genus Oryctodromeus, which we strongly suspect to be a burrower, as the fossils of a pair of them were found buried in a burrow chamber. As a close relative, Albertadromeus may also have shared this trait, which is not very common in dinosaurs!! -"Kalligrammatid" is a family of insects (kalligrammatidae), not a particular genus, and not to be too harsh but you were kinda using it like a genus name. Genera in this family include the namesake Kalligramma, Oregramma, and Meioneurites among others. -I really appreciate that you did this series, and the manner in which you did it as well. You shone a light on some really under-appreciated genera, as well as a whole bunch of non dinosaurs!! You are perhaps one of my favourite artists, and its been a real pleasure to see you tackling these animals in a way that feels both very "you" and very respectful to their appearance in life. Thank you Jack :)

They are also some of the only birds that can create suction in their mouths to drink, so they can drink directly from puddles and streams rather than having to scoop water into their beaks and then tip their heads back like most other birds

On the topic of elemental dinosaurs, Dinosaurs King solidified specific elements to prehistoric animals for me. Thyreophorans, which include stegosaurs and ankylosaurus, being associated with the earth with armor as far as rock, or ceratopsians being electric with their horns acting as lightning rods, or even smaller carnivores like maniraprors or abelisaurs being associated with wind all just for for me

for the hybodus the illustration lacks a few important details that inform us of its ecology the labial cartilages are missing, these are peices of cartilage around the mouth that support "cheeks" like nurse sharks or wobbegongs the relatives of hybodus and hybodus itself had these as most of these animals were benthic (lived on or near the ocean floor) the illustration also forgets the spiracle, a hole behind the head that allows many sharks to breath while on the ocean floor as most sharks dont need to constantly swim (only a few species need to) for the atlanticopristis these animals are always drawn as giant sawfish but thats actually not at all what they look like, they were related to skates and had waaaay more spikey bits than people think. they had these large denticles covering their bodies and on the sides of the head in addition to the rostral ones. these animals also were a lot smaller than usually depicted, being only 3-4m they were more wide as they were related to skates. we also have body fossils of these animals showing they werent big sawfish

irritator! my state university here in brazil has a statue of it crawling out of the roof of one of the science bffuildings, it looks more like a dragon than anything there, but i love your version of it! there's been some petitions recently to get the fossil back from germany to brazil just like the ubirajara was.

43:52 fun fact, Crichton's Jurassic Park novel Dilophosaurus is much closer to being scientifically accurate than the film adaptation of the animal. The only real difference being the venom spitting ability, but there is no frill and it is much larger than a person.

Into the terrestrial croc topic there's a lot of extinct crocs that were full terrestrial and competed with theropods in South America specially Baurusuchids in Mesozoic and Sebecosuchia in Cenozoic There were something like a hellish combination of a crocodilian and a big cat, with strong jaws and armored body

I HAVE TO KNOW Have you played or at least seen Fossil Fighters designs? They each have such cool designs based off of their original location of discovery in the real world or about their name etymology. That game (among other things) really engraved paleontology into my mind and created my hyperfixation on prehistoric creatures.

I actually made 3D models of some fanmade vivosaurs for a lot of this challenge! I themed my whole interpretation of the challenge around Fossil Fighters, haha. Very excited that Jack posted his wrapup video already!

My favorite example of Fossil Fighters designs taking heavy influence from their place or origin or name is their carcharodontosaurus design. It has a head of a shark to reference the "shark-toothed" bit in their name, and it is given patterns and colors reminiscent of Egyptian art as some of its fossils have been found in Egypt! Sure it may not be a particularly accurate design, but the fact the design pays tribute to all these fun facts surrounding the dinosaur is nice.

Also I like Megalosaurus having a bland grey design because it was the first named non-avian dinosaur so it's meant to be a blank slate. And Kronasaurus named after Chronos the titan of time and it has roman numerals to signify dates and time.

Loved the video! Always fun to see your month challenges. I will say i think i prefer the old style videos more, i love hearing you direct thought process for each speedpaint, seeing them in order, as well as seeing the whole process (i feel like in the earlier section of the video it often cut out and felt a little unsatisfying?). Its also exciting to see the updates each week and get more of a personal “doing the challenge with you” each week rather than a huge dump at the end. Shorter videos are more likely for me to watch as they come out also. I hope this feedback helps! I still really enjoyed hearing your overview thoughts so maybe you could make a conclusion video at the end of the month thats a little longer to include that? Dunno! *edit: also wanted to say i dont think the narrative is necessarily what i miss just the format of videos. I enjoy hearing art processes more than narrative( tho both are good!)

Like you do you, the narrative is interesting but I always find them difficult to watch in art videos (I know that's a personal thing and a lot of people like it). I really like this format of video!!! Being split between the quick fun summary retrospect, then having more detailed segments for people who want it! However, people can't tell that from a glance, so it's very likely a lot of people were intimidated by the hour long timestamp, and unfortunately with how videos are based on watchtime, if people only watch the first 20 mins (as you say they can do), KZbin sees it as a "this person didn't want to watch the whole video" and counts it against it. RIP youtube algorithm messing it up

Additional dino facts time! 12:48 Kaprosuchus might not have been terrestrial, but there are plenty alternatives. Like the entire Sebecid and Mekosuchid families, which lived until ~1600BCE . We are living in the first era without land crocs since crocs existed. Kinda sad. (Though Mekosuchus itself was an adorable squirrel-like thing, it's family was appropriately ferocious) 13:10 Speaking of names already being taken, there's Titanoptera (titanic wings), the proposed name for the azhdarchid pterosaurs. Already taken by extinct insects, with a 14-40cm wingspan. Also, say hello to Tyrannasorus rex (beetle) and Megalodon (clam), named to be as confusing as possible. 13:14 A funny thing about Pterosaur wing membranes is that their air sac system likely extended into it, giving a smooth transition from arm to membrane and an airfoil-like cross section. 13:35 Gotta disagree there, the best of both ankylosaurs and sauropods clearly goes to Shunosaurus, a sauropod with a tail club. 14:40 Over the last decade paleontologists have become really good at identifying if a skeleton is from a young or adult animal. Thus "junior synonyms" have become quite common. But there are also a few where it turned out t be wrong, like the proposal that Torosaurus is a grown-up Triceratops. And people still argue about Nanotyrannus being a teenage T. rex or not. (though probably yes) 15:24 The Carnotaurus specimen also includes skin impressions, incredibly rare for a fossil of this size. In fact, it may even have had impressions of the head and horns - but they were carved away before people realised what they were... Which is why nowadays, fossils are often left in their rock and only CT scanned instead, to avoid breaking anything getting to the bone. Also gotta comment on Carnotaurs' (and Abelisaurs in general) screwed up little arms. The upper and lower arms are fused into one bone, most of the fingers are short a few bones and immobile, and what looks like a fourth finger is actually a wrist bone sticking out in a random direction. But nevertheless, they must have used them for something, as the shoulder joint is not only still functional, but with more mobility than other theropods. Showing them flap them about in as a courtship display is a common, and hilarious, theory. 16:00 ...most amphibians and reptiles actually have a third eye, the parietal eye. It's just a little light sensor wired directly into their brain's pineal gland, which regulates the day/night cycle. And in the early 1900s it was a common mystical belief that even though humans don't have one anymore, the pineal gland may still allow you to view the supernatural. So yeah, magical third eye. (Some mosasaurs have particularly large holes in their skulls, indicating a well-developed parietal eye. Probably for deep-diving and low-light conditions.) 16:16 Yep, Dilophosaurs were big boys. In the Jurassic Park novel they were still properly sized, as Nedry's death scene describes one lifting him by his head before crushing it. (The Jurassic Park novels are metal, strongly recommend.) In the movie he has a throwaway line about it being "smaller than your brothers" or something to suggest it was only a baby. 18:23 there's a particularly awesome Kalligrammatid species that not only had eyespots, but straight-up mimicked the entire head of a small theropod to scare off attackers. They sat with wings folded back like a moth, so it's got the triangular shape already, add an eyespot at the back and a series of light stripes at the front wing edge to make a toothy maw. Boom! Theropod head. (Pattern is known as it was preserved in amber.) 19:17 The idea that Tanystropheus could sever it's tail like a lizard came about because to this day, it's not quite clear which clade it belongs to. (Like a lot of triassic weirdos) Nowadays people tend towards making it an archosaur, but for a while it was a true lizard. This belief was strengthened as finding severd tails (and necks) is quite common, but those probably weren't dropped voluntarily. They just make for a great chomping target. (The Nigel Marven dinosaur documentaries were my favourites as a kid, and still are.) 19:29 Dimorphodon has one thing more in common with your dog, it was more of a runner than a flyer! Unlike the bats they are often compared to, pterosaurs were very mobile on the ground as well. Pterosaurs with back legs close to their arm length were terrestrial, with a gallopping stride. (Though there were also a few that were helpless on land, like the nyctosaur family that lost their fingers)

Just a tip on Aegisuchus, the skull is estimated at up to 2.86 meters/9.4 feet, although about 2 meters/6.7 feet or less is more likely, but the whole animal would have been much larger. The specimen is very fragmentary but the full size of the animal would likely be between 10-15 meters, with the lower range of that estimate being more plausible. Also a little nitpick with Carnotaurus, the fossil was actually preserved with some skin and what were thought to be osteoderms like you portrayed. Later analysis has determined that those osteoderms were not actually osteoderms and they were not placed in an organized fashion (it took so long to realize this since the much of preserved skin skin got destroyed after being excavated, although not all of it, so we only have photos now of much of what was preserved), instead they were large scales placed at random. Love your art.

Thank you for talking about the benefits of having an informed approach to taking creative liberties! A lot of my frustration with bad dinosaur designs isn't necessarily that they ARE inaccurate (although I definitely do prefer anatomical accuracy). Artistic license is great, but I feel like the term gets thrown around a lot to defend generic or cliche dinosaur art that's clearly just imitating something like Jurassic Park, rather than making deliberate choices from an informed perspective. I think the recent dinosaur art in Magic The Gathering is a good example of outlandish and unrealistic choices being made while still keeping the base anatomy of the dinosaurs in mind. They stick out really clearly to me as art made by people who DO understand real dinosaur anatomy and are playing around with it to create something fantastical!

i did actually prefer this longer video format for a monthly drawing challenge over the shorter ones and it's fantastic that it's less taxing for you. I love your videos either way but I like to do other things while I watch youtube like drawing along or playing games with youtube in the corner of my screen so one long video means less swapping tabs and struggling to make a video queue. Additionally, youtube has been favouring longer videos over shorter ones so if you care about views, longer vids will be more likely to show up in peoples recommended feeds. I'm not sure if others share this sentiment, but I thought I'd share my two cents anyway. Great video as always. You and Claire both have such admirable passion for art and learning that always shines through in your work :)

I did mermay this year and I’m so proud of myself for committing to it and actually doing it to the end! I’ve never finished one of the monthly drawing challenges before despite having attempted inktober and/or mermay for over 5 years so I set some of my own ground rules for myself to prevent burnout. I figured I’d share them for anyone else who has that struggle too. 1) don’t be afraid to not entirely finish a piece! If you end the day with just line work, you’ve still completed a piece so be proud! 2) I allow myself to go back and work on a piece I either didn’t finish or just wasn’t satisfied with on a later day where I have more time or energy to draw 3) set a schedule and upload the pieces to a social media site. This will give you the motivation to follow through and not just give up entirely after a day or two with a tough prompt! I’d personally recommend posting them once a week or once in the middle of the month and the rest at the end of the month because that gives you enough time to do things in like redrawing an unsatisfactory day but still keep a concrete goal to work towards. 4)feel free to change one or two prompts if they really aren’t working for you! If you wouldn’t take a commission that touches on that prompt (I’m looking at you official mermay prompt day 25) then don’t force yourself. Try using a random word generator to get a prompt that inspires you.

Small pterosaur wing nitpick : - your Dimorphodon and Hadzegopteryx seems to lack the pteroid bone (Hadzegopteryx in particular seem to miss the propatagium all together. - The wrist on your Dimorphodon seem to be very short or inexistant witch makes it look like the propatagium is attach to the base of the digits. - Speaking of finger, why is there only 2 visible, it should be 3 and pointing on the other direction. - Lastly, I don’t know if it’s a perspective issue but the uropatagium should probably be connected to the digit 5 that is absent on the hindlimb. I am not going to comment on the shrinkrapping since I think it’s the style you were going for. Anyway, love your videos, and I adore your take on the species you depicted.

16:00 reptiles do have a third eye! the perineal eye is used to sense differences in light, specifically for avoiding attacks from behind or above (big birds) the evidence is also speculated that it was present on mosasaurus, after all they are relatives of monitor lizards

One small thing: sauropods didn’t use their tails as whips, contrary to one of the little info blurbs calling one of their tails a weapon. If they did use their tails as whips, they would break them.

It was nice following this art throughout May, being a big dinosaur fan myself. I'm honestly quite particular with how I like dinosaurs depicted, but the artistic skill and enthusiasm here made me enjoy the art anyways (I'm still kinda getting over things not being "scientifically accurate"). There were a few factual hiccups here and there, not that this "ruins" the art (there's a ton of older or inaccurate depictions of dinosaurs), but I'm the kinda of pedant that likes to talk about those things. Not going to act like an expert on every organism drawn here (I only know a decent bit about dinosaurs really), but one thing I thought you'd find interesting is the ankylosaur vs nodosaur classification. More recent studies find nodosaurs to be an arbitrary group instead of a valid group of related animals (animals with the nodosaur body plan look similar but aren't that closely related to each other). Now they're all just referred to as ankylosaurs and they've been split into a few different families within the group. If you are curious about dinosaur stuff I'd recommend the channels Your Dinosaurs are Wrong and Skeleton Crew. Both talked about the nodosaur bit and other cool dinosaury things in an engaging format. Sorry for the rambling, I like dinosaurs hah

Hell yeah, this was one hell of a great challenge! It was great to see such an awesome blend of both creative and fairly accurate depictions of extinct animals, some of which we new to someone like myself who literally is in the field of paleontology. It brings me great joy knowing that their are people not associated with the scientific community at all that are willing to invest time and effort into doing art of extinct animals, and doing the research necessary for that. People like you, being able to bridge the gap between the public and the science that your drawings oozed with, are what we need. People who can make drawings come to life, be creative, and still be accurate to a degree are what we as those in the scientific community need to have to allow for our knowledge to not just be our knowledge anymore, and sometimes educate us as well. Thank you, sincerely, for doing such an incredible amount of work in this challenge, and you definitely deserve however long of a break you want!

I wasn't able to do most of them but had fun with the ones I did get, experimented with some different styles and went down some very interesting rabbitholes when researching and looking for references of the critters. There was a bit of hair pulling when I saw how little material there was for some of these animals lol. Overall it was a fun time drawing the one thing I'm somewhat confident I can do well. Gonna make it a goal to do a challenge that pulls me out of my comfort zone and actually do one illustration a day and see it through to the end

19:30 What do you mean, 😂? Rhamphorhynchus was actually larger than Dimorphodon, with a 1.6+m wingspan to Dimorphodon's 1.45m. Dimorphodon had the bigger head, and so may have weighed slightly more, but tbh, most Pterosaurs in that time period were about the same size (or smaller).

As someone who has observed and tried out these monthly challenges for years, I've always wondered how early do you start prepping for a project like this? Some days I can get in 3-4 hours of solid work in, but other days I just don't have the time to sit down and complete fully rendered illustrations. Personally I would need to plan for something like this months in advance in order to stay on top of everything.

So I use to watch Barney as a Kid and that kinda oddly started my love for Dinosaurs in General. Land before Time and 90s Dinosaur too..but it drove my Brother nuts to the point he tried to Scar me for life with Jurassic Park (no luck, it made me also love the gorey side.) Anyways it got to the point he hated Barney with a passion. So That Giga would scare him shitless.

I actually really like the bright colors. Usually today we think of most megafauna as pretty dull, color-wise, but that's because most of today's megafauna are mammals, which have a relatively limited color palatte. When thinking about dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures, it's important to keep in mind that there's at least a possibility they sported bright colors, especially since color can tell us a lot about how an animal lives. (Imagine not knowing what colors a peacock is, for example).
