Making with Marilyn

Күн бұрын

I did a video recently where I sublimated a couple of cute gnomes on a glass cutting board from the Dollar Tree. It turned out super cute, but I had to clean a lot of paper off the back of the cutting board that was stuck to the vinyl. In this video, I tried a new brand of sublimation paper and it peeled right off the cutting board without any cleanup necessary. I had seen other people on KZbin use it and couldn't believe the difference, so I just had to try it. Boy am I glad I did! A viewer helped me find this image later and I have since purchased it but as of August 2022 that Etsy Shop no longer exists. If you google "blue flower faith" and look at images, you will find the design. Also, I found it in another Etsy Shop today. www.etsy.com/l...

Beautiful! Your tutorial is perfect! I just made a couple and wanted to tell you that I did 1 with Oracal 651 and the other with just some cheapie vinyl from a bundle I bought from Amazon. They both worked perfect! And fyi...if you screw up after pressing...(I did 4 x 90 minutes!) The vinyl comes off very easily and very cleanly. It was about an hour later, so it was completely cooled. Thanks again!

Hello! This is so pretty! However, I was told that you should not heat up 651 vinyl. It has cancer causing chemicals, when you heat it up, they leach out. I was told a better way was to use a clear heat transfer vinyl. Because it’s for heating, it will not put those chemicals in the air. Just FYI. No disrespect, it is so pretty!

I have noticed that over time, a few of my trivets are getting fuzzy (for lack of a better word). They used to be crisp and clear and now they are a little muddy over time. Wondering if you have any input about what I could be doing wrong. Thanks in advance.
@MakingwithMarilyn
@MakingwithMarilyn Жыл бұрын
I think it is a result of the hack. I believe the ink migrates a bit in the vinyl over time. For a hack, I think it is a great project, but I would not sell these due to that issue. If it gets to where you do not want to use it, you can soak it for a long time and get the vinyl off to make another one.

I haven't had any problems with any that I have done. If eventually one that cracks, the vinyl will keep it from falling all apart and being dangerous and I have very little money in it. However, if you aren't comfortable, they do make actual sublimation cutting boards that you can buy from companies like Conde (DyeTrans), etc. that you could use. Always a good idea to be cautious.

I am not sure, but what I have done and have seen others do is to add lamination film to ceramic tiles and then sublimate onto that. I have only done this on white tiles, though. Some people use the 3M lamination pouches and pull them apart. I prefer this really thin laminating film. amzn.to/37bHNf0 If you end up trying the vinyl, I would love to hear if it works for you:)

I had bought a different spray adhesive that was repositional. The vinyl went on perfect but after i pressed it bubbles appeared. Does this happen with rapid tack?
@MakingwithMarilyn
@MakingwithMarilyn 7 ай бұрын
Rapid tac isn't really an adhesive, it is just a liquid that helps you be able to move your adhesive around before you heat it to the surface you are putting it on. As. long as you squeegee out all of the liquid, the vinyl goes on smoothly. But, you do have to make sure you squeegee it all out, just like when you are removing air from under the vinyl. I think I may have shown a close up of this cutting board after using the rapid tac. It was very very smooth.

@MakingwithMarilyn

Someone asked me about that awhile back so I got it out and looked at it. It's possible that it has faded a little, but nothing really noticeable. I assume if you use it as a heating block, it would fade from the heat. I don't sell mine and I often pull the vinyl off (after letting it soak in water a few hours and it's still tough to get off) after a few months to put a new design on, so it would not bother me if it were to fade given the inexpensiveness of it.

Beautiful. Can this be done without a heat press? Are you able to use the cricut hand held heat press for iron on vinyl?
@MakingwithMarilyn
@MakingwithMarilyn 2 жыл бұрын
You can use the Cricut easy press for iron on vinyl. I think you would need the easy press 2 or later for sublimation due to the heat required. It might be difficult to keep even pressure against the cutting board for long enough to do this process, but might be worth a try. If you do try it, let me know how it comes out. Thanks for watching!!!

Hello is there a way to get rid of bubbles after you sublimate?
@MakingwithMarilyn

Possibly by poking the bubble with a sewing pin to let the air escape and then repressing it for a bit, but I'm not really sure.

So wait...I am in process of getting my stuff to start sublimation so I know nothing and why I have been watching videos...so the sub ink basically infuses with the vinyl to make the image visible? This is very interesting
@MakingwithMarilyn
@MakingwithMarilyn 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. It doesn't work with all vinyl, but it does work with the vinyl used in the video. This is a fun, very inexpensive and easy project to start with. My advise is when you get started, practice on inexpensive items and scraps of polyester fabric before working with your more expensive blanks. Good luck and reach out if you have questions along the way.

Marilyn....I was wondering what your thoughts are on trying to use the DTF film and powder and putting in on a glass cutting board from dollar tree??
@MakingwithMarilyn
@MakingwithMarilyn Жыл бұрын
If you want it for decoration only, it might work to put it on the back (smooth) side since once the adhesive powder cures, it is pretty clear. Even for just decoration, I feel like it would not stick well to the pebbly textured top. If you try it, I would love to hear about your results!

Hi!! I tried your method and one turned out great and then the other after putting the vinyl on with the tack you mentioned it was perfect no bubbles then I put it in the heat press for 15 sec like you did and it came with some bubbles. And some where big and caused the vinyl to crease. Can you remove the vinyl anyway or heat the image off?
@MakingwithMarilyn
@MakingwithMarilyn 2 жыл бұрын
Oh no! I am sorry that happened. Heat will cause any little bubbles to expend. If you soak your cutting board in water for awhile, you can pull it off. It’s not real easy to do but I have definitely done that.
