Sublimation on to Oracal 651 - GLOSSY VINYL STICKERS!!!

I’ll definitely try that! If you laminate two sheets of vinyl together back to back, you can separate them after laminated. The front will remain “sublimatable” while the back will be free from the lamination film, making it more flexible and easier to peel off.

in theory yes, just need to be mindful of the thickness going through the laminator itself. Heat pressing the laminate sheets to the vinyl never gave good results for me.

Considering the ordinary use for a laminator with a heavy cardstock inside the "sandwich," two sheets of Oracal 651, back to back, is certainly not as thick. I only get frustrated with the 651 wanting to coil up inside the pouch, so I never do this when I'm tired.

@@ellagregory818 UV spray works, but can sometimes be noticable. It's a bit of a pain, but I used to use UV sheets that I would roll press on the sticker. Holds up well, but it is time consuming.

I cut the laminate sheet in half and laminate only the vinyl side. Saves on vinyl and if your laminator needs thicker material - just run a piece of paper thru on the bottom of the sheet, and vinyl

Hi Fiona, glad the process worked. Are you using Oracal 651 or a different brand of vinyl? I would try lowering the temperature slightly and maybe the duration. Try in 10⁰ and 10 second increments and see how you get on.

In testing, sublimating direct to the vinyl produced dull washed out colours. Laminating over the top helped get a shine but the colours still weren't as vibrant. I tried different vinyl and the results just weren't as good. Some of the vinyl couldn't take the heat either. But feel free to experiment, you might get lucky with your choice of vinyl 👍🏼

Yes and no. I tested one stuck on an outside window. The colours stayed well but the lamination started to peel after about 3 months. These are ideal for indor use. Jars, bottles etc, maybe kids toy boxes or anything not likely to spend too long outside in the elements.

Because they don’t last forever I print family photos. Sublimated lamented and put on my parents head stones. It’s ok they don’t last. We have 4 seasons and family occasions. Now my parents can have a piece of our lives. It may sound weird but to us it’s a very special thing. I first started doing this years before Cricut and sublimation was poppy. I used packing tape to cover my photos on photo paper and inkjet ink. Worked ok. But I think this will definitely look better and Color’s last longer. Thank you

In all honesty, no. However, I have had a sticker I made on the outside of glass and it lasted a good few months. Guess it depends on how long you need it to last.

Yes you can, however the heat makes the vinyl go matt and the colours are dull. This way the stickers are glossy and vibrant.

A sticker isn't designed for garments, you'd be better off sublimating straight to the tshirt (if they are not 100% cotton)

Try using a Tack Cloth (you can get these from a car paint supplier) these use them for removing fine dust particles before spraying.

I did try a different brand of vinyl before purchasing the ORACAL651 but it seemed to crinkle under the heat. Definitely worth experimenting with different vinyl brands though.

This did not work for me.. I have almost the same press. Mine is new and don’t know temps yet seeing I’m use to cricut press. I have to raise temp to 305 and did a min. That was after doing it on 180 for the min. Cause that left nothing it was blank.

once you cut around the image the back of the laminate sheet should peel off with the paper backing.

Hi while watching your video I had an idea on how to improve some part of your process and make it a little bit less wasteful regarding you laminating sheets what would happen if you sandwiched to sheets of Oracal vinyl, back to back (backing sheet against backing sheet) and then laminated them when you cut around after that, won't you be able to separate them and end up with two sheet of laminated vinyl but no laminated sheet wasted on the backing paper? is there a risk that the heat of your laminating machine will make the two backing stick to each other?

Great idea and in theory would/should work. However, 2 layers of Oracal 651back to back will be too thick for the laminator to handle. As i said in a reply to another viewer, I've never had much success using a heat press to laminate the vinyl due to downward pressure rather than smoothing pressure applied by a laminator machine. You could cut the laminator pouch in half and only laminate the front ofbthe vinyl, however, during testing, i found this method not as successful (maybe the extra layer thickness helps bond the laminate sheet to the vinyl better)

What mil thickness are your laminating sheets? I have the option of 5 mil and 3 mil. I bought 5 mil and it seems a little too thick, but will wait for your answer before purchasing the 3mil. TIA.

My laminator can use thick and thin (adjustment dial on the side) Although it seems thick, remember youll only be using the front. The paper backing and rear of the laminate pouch will be discarded. 5mm or 3mm should work but if you personally feel the 5mm is too thick, try the 3mm.

If you are using a roller type laminator, and you have the option to adjust heat/speed settings, try those. Or maybe try switching brand of laminate pouches.

It could be a number of things to be honest. Are you using a laminator machine to apply the laminate sheets? Has the machine got a thickness setting? Are they good quality laminate sheets?

With a normal pigment printer yes, but we are trying to cheat the system here by using a sublimation printer to sublimate onto the laminate pouches.

I never had success using the heatpress. With a laminator, the air is smoothed out as it goes through the rollers. A heatpress is downwards pressure and traps air.

early tests prove positive. Had a test sticker stuck on an outside window for over a month in sun, rain, snow and ice and still good colours and adhesion.

I'm trying your method using my cricut heat press and I can't get the image to transfer to the laminate sheet. The lowest heat setting I have is 210 and I've done it twice for 60 seconds but when I look the laminated sheet is completely blank like nothing happened. What am I doing wrong? I'm using A-Sub paper, scotch laminating pouches, oracle 651 clear permanent adhesive vinyl. Cricut heat press 2 and cricut heat mat and cricut maker.. please advise if you can 🙏🏾

Hi, seems odd your heat press only drops to 210. Is that Celsius or Fahrenheit? The setting i use is 180 Celsius for 60 seconds. Hope this helps

Heat press temps tend to vary so much, I'd try a few different temps and durations. Is the laminate sticking to the vinyl straight out the laminator and before the heatpress stage?

@@ccdesign296 no I doesn't stick on the vinyl from the beginning. trying different pouches, different temperatures and time. now I ordered a laminator, maybe the result is better than with the heatpress. but I don't think so, I viewed other videos they laminated wood canvas and so on. I can't put that throw the laminator 😅 maybe its ok as is, but imo it feels very "loosen" on the vinyl. like a bad sticker. is the laminate from the vinyl even not resolvable at your process? or how much strength is necessary to separate the parts again?

The laminator smoothes the bubbles out as it slowly rolls through therefore giving a better even adhesion. Heat pressing applies downward pressure so any trapped air isn't pushed out.

@@ccdesign296 hi, yes I am laminating the vinyl into the laminated sheets using the laminator. If I sublimate at 300+ degrees I can get it to sublimate, but it burns the laminate. It is in F as well.

Play with temperatures, some heat press "actual" temperatures are very different to what the display says. Play around lowering temps and duration.

Hi how do you get around your plotter seeing the registration Mark's in reverse/mirrored after you've heatpressed the image. Mine doesn't cut on the image after I press the image. Thanks for the video you can press straight on the vinyl but that ends up looking matte this way gives it a nice glossy finish.

I wondered exactly the same when I was trialling this method. Fried my brain tbh, but all I do is print and press in mirror but cut in un-mirrored. The registration marks identify the furthest points so mirrored or un-mirrored they stay the same. I know it sounds alien but give it a go.

Just got round to trying this and what I found out was if I cut a symmetrical image I had no problems but if the image is different on one side my plotter would cut the image the wrong way round due to it been mirrored after heat pressing. I hadn't noticed before there is an option in my cutting software (sign master pro) to cut in mirrored mode once I clicked this option the problem was solved and everything cuts as it should. Wish I had seen this option before I've wasted so much vinyl haha. Love the nice glossy images though from following your idea, works really well 👍

Yes so to clarify things then what we are saying is I mirror my work in the Workspace and you mirror your work in the printer options.

you don't need those sheets to sublimate on 651. Just lay your sublimate image down on the clear or white vinyl, tape down for 25 sec at 350 temperature and that's it

And related to print directly to orac vinyl with pigment or dye ink IT doesnt Last even if you laminate IT. The sun destroys The colors even with laminator

I take it the temp is celcius. I tried to convert it to Fahrenheit and my laminate gets all winked. I've gone thru about 50 sheets and still can get it right. I'm trying to make a page of sticker for the grandkids. I'm using 3mil laminate. You make it look so easy. If you have any suggestions I'd appreciate it. Thanks

Have you got captions turned on for the video? It's 180⁰ Celsius. Are you using a heat press to laminate the vinyl as heatpressing doesn't work. Turn on captions and read the notes on the video, it will definitely help.

Why not print on the vinyl then laminate over that to protect the ink print?

From testing, and as others have found, printing directly to the vinyl gives dull colours and even turns the gloss vinyl matt. Its the poly in the laminate sheet that allows the sublimation.

@@ohayodecals6410 I have had one stuck on the window outside as a trial for over a month now. Wind, Rain, Sun and even Snow and ice and it seems to have held up ok. Colours still good, no peeling. Time will tell but early results are proving good!

Sublimation direct to vinyl gives an awful matt finish. Tried it with various types of vinyl and always got same dull results

So basically you print onto the laminate which is glued on the 651, not onto 651 itself.. Should fade on the sun that one...
