I think one of the worst parts of this song’s story is the implication that Annie was sexually assaulted by her brothers frequently, given that the word to describe them was “horny” instead of “lazy” or something like that, and the music video reinforces it a lot at the beginning and near the end, the way she seems to keep it together the entire time until close ups of her brothers and dad flash through her brain like some sort of breakdown.

@@sadokitty2593 the story is this john or the customer of a prostitute is telling about her, she presumably lost her mother at 12 and her good for nothing father and brothers daughter forced her into prostitution at 14. he decides to take her away from all this for a new life with him. but he is not a rich guy and can't afford all the things she want, she is very unhappy with him and he decides to giver her the option of staying with him or leaving. well she leaves to pick up her life as a prostitute again, the only life she knows, it's all wrong but that's life. this also kind of reflects Bradley's life, he was an addict which he knew was wrong but he could not changer and remained an addict until he died of an overdose, before this song became popular. this song is pretty dark without a happy ending,

I just dicovered this song literally right now. Moral of the story don't turn off the "auto-play".

The Nineties were special. It was a fleeting moment of joy that existed between the end of the Cold War, and the Afghan War that followed 9/11. Children of the seventies and eighties were raised with the knowledge that a nuclear war with the "Evil Empire" could happen at any time. Those kids became adults when that Pax Americana was shattered, leading to a war so long that, by its end there were soldiers fighting who were younger than the war itself. This is why the Nineties were likely the last time it was good to be an American.

Irony - by censoring "shit", it sounds like he's singing "believe me she was tight", which is worse than the original context.

This song always make me fucking cry. It's so sad and depressing. I first heard it on the radio a few years ago late at night with the summer breeze blowing through my room. I was probably 10, I love this band
