That's some real impressive sheets of steel. Handling and forming those require the right equipment, and the right know how. Some looked to be over several inches thick. Rolling and forming requires very specialized machinery. Heating them to soften before stamping makes a lot of sense. Welding all the sheets together is another amazing process. Even with automated welding equipment, building up 2-3 inches of weld to join those huge steel sheets together requires more time than most people could imagine. Every weld inspected by special scanners. Everything has to be perfect, those subs are going down deep, water pressure at depth is immense.

@@machinatuscom you are welcome, very interesting post. Ship building has always amazed me. Underwater ships even more so. If there is a leak in a weld on a cruise ship, it's annoying, and will be fixed when back at port. A leak in the pressure hull of submarine is a life or death situation. I had a friend who joined Navy. He was on Trident Subs 6 months a year. That put a face and name on submarines, made it personal.

@@pops7249 The submarine was built in West Germany in 1977, went through an experimental voyage, and commissioned in 1978. If the sunken Indonesian submarine was normal, she had to undergo overhaul maintenance again in 2018 to be able to operate. @oceanic84242 жыл бұрын
[09/13/22] Submarine building capabilities used to be considered a "black art", but the internet age has brought it out from behind the shadows, and revealed some of the processes and techniques used to build these monsters of the deep. Sweden's Kockums builds some of the quietest AIP boats in the world. So quiet in fact that in 2005 a Swedish boat stealthily entered the aircraft carrier's security perimeter, and "sank" the USS Ronald Reagan during wargames in the Pacific. Lessons were learned. The forming and welding of the hulls is really fascinating. I wonder what the tolerances are on these massive components (could they even approach ±.001 inch or ±0.01mm?) What a shame to place such traditionally noisy screws (propellers) on some of these boats. Modern sonar can identify boats by name bc of their unique acoustic signatures. Thanks for posting these videos.

The workmanship is very complicated and takes a long time but the results are very satisfying ....... Try taking a walk to our shop maybe there is something interesting to enjoy....🙏🙏🙏

Extremely tight tolerances. The roll outs in the shafts are nearly 100% perfect. The less wobble, the less harmonic distortion at higher revolutions. Therefore less noise and cavitation in the water. True ‘Wrights’ and ‘Craftsmen’
