Does the slight randomization of the drop pod spawn affect your runs at all? I remember in the first game the lifepod location varied a bit, I’m not sure whether it’s the same in Below Zero.

BZ is generally smaller than the first game. We need to gather less resources, less swimming because the map is smaller.

what's the secret to dying without losing items?

you won't lose items if you die inside underwater architect bases, also marg base i think; entering your own base (or droppod) secures your inventory (you won't lose any items that you had when you were in the base)
