I played the first 20 minutes of Subnautica many years ago, but never any further. Today, I'm starting the journey to play through the whole game. Little do I know that Subnautica will be the scariest game I've ever played - by a lot.

I quite like this video format. Far as I can tell it's just condensing the stream into more of a highlight reel of a game that tends to have long periods of just swimming around. I can see this style really working for most games that have a lot of travel time in them and if I want to see all the details I can just go check out the VODs. Very interesting move here.

As someone who's mostly caught up with the streams (I haven't watched all of stream 11 and 12 yet) it's fascinating watching Stephen play the first few hours of Subnautica all over again. Especially since I started playing after watching his streams and looking up information on the game-so I didn't get as surprised by some of the stuff (though there was still plenty of discoveries of my own). It's particularly interesting seeing all the collecting and filling up all those water lockers-which feels like foreshadowing for the many lockers he would come to make in the future. Either way, this is delightful! I really like how this is edited, allowing for a coherent story of discoveries and exploration to be told while cutting out most of the travel and organization that was constantly happening so that there's less "dead air" so to speak. Definitely going to be watching for these as I catch back up on the streams!

Two things, first I love this highlight style for the Subnautica streams. I've tuned into them here and there but it's the sort of game I probably wouldn't go back and watch long sessions of. Cutting the whole stream into one video is a great idea for this. Second, man I love that opening shot, knowing it's from the bathtub makes it infinitely more entertaining 🤣. I always loved the live actions bits (running around DC for Fallout, running around the park for Zelda, etc.) and this feels like a natural evolution of that. Looking forward to more highlights!

Oh I feel you on having your head surrounded by water. We had a pool when I was a kid and my family always wanted me to learn how to dive but I just couldn't do it. Having my head surrounded by water is just a no-no. Throws me into a panic.

It's the style KZbin seems to like now with the brief preview of a highlight. I can't stand it myself, I always hit fast-forward immediately to avoid being 'spoiled', but I understand why Stephen has to do it for The Algorithm.

i love water but in games where you can drown underwater if you stay there too long and you need to get air i will freak out. not irl though because luckily our brain heavily urges us to get some air minutes before we actually genuinely need it so danger is limited. what im trying to say is this game would probably still scare me

I enjoyed the Subnautica streams a lot more than I expected, both because of the dichotomy of Stephen vs Hayley / other people who have played it, and the retro feel to the game's focus on inventory management etc. As I said elsewhere, there is definitely a nearby timeline where Stephen spent multiple streams dying of thirst in the lifepod before daring to venture out, though ;)

I had the same fear, buddy. Still do to a degree. I got better with water by just pushing myself to be in it. Started with doing laps in a 9 foot pool, then went snorkeling in Hawaii. Have to push through fear to get over it.

35:13 Ah. So Stephen found a time capsule and scanned it, but did not pick it up. That's understandable. At this point in the game he's been trained to scan wreckage for blueprints and titanium, and the capsules just seem like more wreckage. I've been watching the Wednesday streams but I forget if he picks up an actual capsule at some point. He'll definitely learn their significance by the end of the game though.

Huh. Just saw the time capsule Stephen found at 35:13. Did he go back and read it? He got distracted by the Seamoth discovery, so I don't think he went back to read it. I kind of hope he does go back for it-I've only come across one in my time with the game (probably doesn't help that I borrowed it from the library and thus had to return it) but the one I have found was very sweet. It'd be really neat to see him read it along with any other time capsules he finds.

My second playthrough was FAR different than my first and I enjoyed them both for very different reasons. First Playthrough (1P) Stalker: Oh my god leave me alone. Stop making those noises. Please don't bite me. Second Playthrough (2P) Stalker: Oh, you wanna play? No, this metal is mine go play with your own. Hey, come back with my camera drone! 1P Sandshark: Omg did that thing just come out of the ground!? Please don't hurt meeee. 2P Sandshark: Oh go back in your hole already and stop throwing a tantrum. 1P Crabsnake: F this game 2P Crabsnake: Dude, calm down. I'll stay away from your little home. 1P Warper: F THAT GUY. Please don't pull me out of the safety of my sub! **dies from disoriented panicking after being pulled out** 2P Warper: Sigh. **takes a moment to reorient myself and then gets back inside sub** (I mean seriously, on my second playthrough I was just floating underwater next to my sub while I did inventory management, something I absolutely would not have done in my first playthrough. While I had my inventory screen open the tentacles of a Warper slowly descended right in front of my face. Feeling ballsy I just kept sorting my inventory and waited to see what it would do. It got bored of me and left without attacking.) 1P Reaper Leviathan: omg omg omg omg omg **does not stop until back in the safe shallows capsule** 2P Reaper Leviathan: Sigh. **goes in straight line until I don't hear the roar for a bit**. Ive never understood the thalassaphobia aspect of subnautica. Simply treat each thing you encouter as your best friend and that they would never harm you. You'd be surprised how often it works out. How else do you think i scanned all of my leviathans? Just swim straight towards them

Personally, this is the kind of video I hate. Constant cuts and a title that tells me nothing. I'm also not a fan of the little preview in the very beginning before the intro. But I watch the vods, and not episodes here, because I prefer seeing everything. I wouldn't have watched these videos regardless because of that so I hope this lets the channel be more successful and this style stays to things that were streamed.

hate to say that i kinda agree. too much cutting, i like to just watch something and experience the entire journey even the parts with less going on.(except for maby tedious parts like backtracking or grinding). i still enjoyed the video but less then i otherwise would have, but you're right that's why we have the vods
