When I was a child we would go to Belgium to visit family. They would all speak Flemish and I would always feel removed from conversations and further from my family than I wanted to be. When I asked my father from Belgium to teach me he told me it was a stupid language and to forget about it because the world speaks English. My mom also said this. I tried to teach myself from Duolingo and your videos. When my grandpa died I found myself alone with my grandma who speaks no English, yet I was able to talk to her. Don't listen to people who tell you not to learn Dutch. Yes many people speak English, and you will probably sound stupid for a long time, but you will have your moments, and they are priceless

@@andrew9840 I've seen onm Sondag met Lubach - Flemish kids speak Dutch and French (and English of course), while Wallonian kids speak French only. Google tells me it should be "gesproken" instead. The rules for ge+werkwoord+en words are still unknown to me, so I think I did pretty good for a guess! Very exciting.

Very wel! In this sentence it’s actually with the infinite “spreken”, because it has the modal verb “wil”. It’s not a sentence in the perfect, that would have been: “ik heb Nederlands gesproken.” I have a couple of videos in all of these topics (with willen + also a couple about the perfect). Imperfectum is dus de verleden tijd. Kijk, dat heb ik gemist ook toen ik in Leden zelf Sociale Wetenschappen studeerde. Mooie video, Kim! Echt super uitgelegd. Alleen je tempo is snel. Ik leer Tsjechisch, maar mis daarbij een Kim! Ze zal dan voor mij langzamer moeten uitleggen. U gaat we snel. ook mis ik een grammaticaal overzicht van perfectum, imperfectum etc. Latijnse begrippen die ik heb gemist, helaas. Top video, Kim.

I think the correct way to phrase this would be: Ik leer Nederlands omdat ik wil met andere mensen spreken. You seem to have mixed two ways of expressing a reason; you could also say « Ik leer Nederlands om met andere mensen te spreken. » :) Hope this can help you!

Gelukkig nieuwjaar. 🎁 Ik vind jou videos echt mooi. In dit video zegt je “als je wilt leren over de structuur van de bijzin”. Ik vraag me af als het werkword aan het eind van de zin komt dan moet de zin “als je over de structuur van de bijzin wilt leren” zijn. Ik ben een beetje in de war 🤔

Ook gelukkig nieuwjaar! Dankjewel voor je leuke bericht en een heel goede vraag en goed opgelet!! Dit is een iets ingewikkelder onderwerp dat ik in latere video's zal uitleggen, maar het was een beetje teveel voor deze video. De zin die jij schrijft is helemaal goed natuurlijk! Maar er is een uitzondering: je kan een zinsdeel met een prepositie nog achter het werkwoord plaatsen. Daarom kan "over de structuur van de bijzin" ook achter "leren" staan. Verwarrend he! Ik wilde niet teveel informatie in deze video stoppen (want hij is al vrij lang), maar in een andere video zal ik laten zien dat dit soort zinsdelen dus nog wel achter het werkwoord kunnen staan. Fijne avond!

Ik leer Nederlands omdat mijn dochter in Nederland woont en gaat trouwen met een Nederlander. Ik moet een huwelijkstoespraak houden. Ik vind het moeilijk om te bepalen waar bijwoorden in complexe Zinnemann gaan. For example, in this video, some of the subordinate clauses were S O A V, S A O A V, V S A O A. When I learnt German and Afrikaans, the rule for adverbials was Time Manner Place after the working verb. This is clearly not true in real-world examples. Do you have any thoughts on my confusion, or can you recommend a thorough grammar book. Kindest regards, Eddy.

Hoi, leuk dat je Nederlands leer voor je dochter! Over je vraag: spreektaal is altijd een beetje anders dan schrijftaal, omdat je - als je spreekt - tijdens het spreken nogal eens van structuur verandert. Dus de grammatica die je in boekjes leert is altijd strikter dan hoe mensen spreken. Ik weet niet of er een specifiek boek hierover gaat, ik denk dat je het dus het beste kan opzoeken op Google! Succes

Dat kan helaas niet op die manier, aangezien ik nieuwe lessen blijf maken :) Je kunt wel een patron worden en als je dan bijvoorbeeld 10 euro per maand betaald, krijg je, zolang als je patron bent, toegang tot een bepaald aantal lessen per maand zonder er elke keer op de website voor de hoeven betalen. Amazing videos! Question about one of your examples… ik ben naar Amerika gegaan omdat ik een paper moest presenteren. For some reason I thought it would be ‘ik ben naar Amerika gegaan omdat ik een paper presenteren moest’, with the last two words the other way around. Am I wrong or could you do either? 😊

I've learned that "toen" is used for de bijzin and hoofdzin in the past tense while "wanner/als" is used for them in the present tense.However, I've come across a sentence having present tense in de hoofdzin and perfect tense in de bijzin like below ; "Ik maak het toilet schoon wanneer jij de vloer hebt geveegd." It seems weird to me grammatically, but I think I miss sth about it. Could you explain it, please? En Ik hoop dat ooit jij 1 miloejn euro zul hebben !!!!! :)

Hoi, thank you so much for your nice comment! And I hope that as well! First of all about "toen" and "wanneer" & "als": you are almost correct, but they are not conjunction words for hoofdzinnen (main sentences) but only for bijzinnen. Toen is indeed only for the past and the other two for the now and the future. It's a confusing sentence you got there, because the second sentence is indeed in the perfectum, but you can sometimes also use this tense to indicate something in the future, but it emphasizes the end of that action. So in English it would be "I clean the toilet after you HAVE SWEEPT the floor". So you see you use the perfectum in this case in English as well. It's also called the "present perfect" and in Dutch the "voltooid tegenwoordige tijd". So most of the time you use the perfectum to say something about he past, but sometimes you use it to refer to an action which should be finished in the future before you go and do something else. And that's why you use wanneer or als in your sentence! Groetjes, Kim
