Base Stats are one of the most important pieces that make up a Pokémon. While typing, moves, and abilities all play a part, a Pokémon's base stats tend to be the most vital part in defining their role in battle. And as you would expect, some Pokémon aren't too lucky in the stat department. In fact, quite a number of Pokémon have stats that simply don't make much sense! In this video we'll go over some Pokemon with underwhelming base stat distributions and see where the hell Game Freak went wrong!

The reason Mantine has 140 Sp.Def is because it and Skarmory were created to be counterparts and Gold/Silver version exclusives, they share the same stat spread just that skarmory has more attack and def while mantine has more Sp.Atk and Sp.Def ( but in gen 7 Gamefreak buffed Mantine which meant they were no longer really countrparts stats wise )

I really hate that so many old tanks would get a really high single defensive stat and then okay in the other and low HP. I think the 20 extra HP Mantine got should also go to Skarmory. It'd help it feel like I'm not giving up on the numerous better options these days when I pick it as my physical wall

Vikavolt's Speed stat is a crime against humanity

Vikavolt known for its zipping around the forest has 47 speed. it really should be much higher but we also really should not equate speed stat to physical speed. the 112 speed on Purugly makes sense if it is more its reaction speed and not how physically quick it can run.

That would make sense for Purugly, cause I seen vids of actual house cats reaction times, where fast-striking snakes try to attack them, and the cats have some reaction times that are so fast they can literally bat said snake from the attack or jump out of the way quickly

I've said this before, but Pokemon Speed _cannot_ make sense on a general scale. Speed stats are always relative to similar Pokemon, such as Purugly being a smidge slower than Persian - the original fast cat Pokemon. But there's no reason why Purugly should be faster than Metagross when the latter is a psychic supercomputer that has a slower pre-evolution that already flies at 60 mph. Hell, Metagross, or at least Metang, being as slow as it is doesn't make sense in and of itself. If you take Speed as physical, straight line dashing speed, then you run into the usual issue of the Lati@s being slower than Purugly. If you take it as reaction speed, then Purugly is still faster than Metagross and Thundurus (who fights Tornadus, who casually flies around at 200 mph). And if you take it as a mon's agility in close quarter fights, then explain Tauros being faster than Keldeo or Comfey being faster than Frogadier. The only answer is to hold Game Freak accountable every time they call a mon "fast" then give it sub-50 Speed (RIP Escavalier), then to make a 4 hour long video essay spiraling into insanity trying in vain to make sense of it all.

Barraskewda made me box Inteleon. It basically became my favorite child in my first run of Shield. it basically never let me down. the only Pokemon more clutch in that run was, of all things, Vileplume. I just feel like you can't write off a laser-designed glass cannon like Barraskewda as mediocre.

As someone who’s favourite pokemon is Electrode, I think its rather, not good stat wise, defences make sense, HP too, But its an exploder with, no attack, but also a special attacker with, minimal special attack, kinda weird, Speed is good tho, Don’t think its design needs too much of a change though

I think the design flip is meant to mimic negative and positive ions. The way the design flips upside down and the way it's face goes from a negative expression to a positive expression. Then they did the same with its face changing expressions in the Hisuian form, but inverse

Because Gen 1 wasn’t initially planned to have PvP battles, Electrode’s whole thing was to be a troll. You encounter it? Prepare to get exploded on. Just like how Onix only really exists as a boss Pokemon for Brock. If you use either of them, you’ll see how useless they are outside of their intended roles.

Electrode was 100% built with Explosion halving Defense in mind. It was just an unfortunate coincidence for Electrode once Explosion and Self-Destruct got hyper-nerfed come Gen 5. Even using it yourself in-game was okay pre-Gen 5, because having a fast instant kill button at the cost of some EXP, while gimmicky, gave Electrode a _very_ clear niche. It also giving you fast Electric STAB was just a pleasantry on Game Freak's part. Yeah, you could always teach Self-Destruct/Explosion to another Pokemon, but Electrode came with those moves pre-built into its learnset which made the process much easier and more accessible. Onix though? I can get into how giving it Graveler's Attack stat would have still been manageable due to only having Tackle on Brock's Gen 1 team, but... I'll stop the text wall for now.

@@christiancinnabars1402 Yup, even Gengar with its pitiful attack stat was often used with Explosion in Gen 4 because of the move halving the opponent's defense. Explosion used to be a reliable move even on Pokémon with low attack, simply because it was so insanely powerful.

Even worse is that Electrode didn't even get any electric moves by level in Gen 1. I really was there to be a mimic that's too fast to run from and explodes in your face. To its credit, outspeeding Mewtwo and having thunder wave make it good for precisely one thing.

Idk, I sometimes finding myself struggling against Electrodes in casual playthroughs. So I feel like it’s doing something right. Have a Pokémon that mimics an item, make it difficult to escape that Pokemon, have it explode in your face. Boom. You’ve got a classic mimic enemy with a Pokemon spin, and it serves that role almost well. Increasing its attack would definitely help.

Don’t know what releasing at midnight does algorithmically. Anyhow, obvious disappointing stat spread is Ledian the tokusatsu hero with 4 arms to punch with, and has Iron Fist as a hidden ability, has an inexplicably high special defense and it’s lowest stat is Attack. Why do you have 4 arms and 35 attack but 110 special defense when you’re basically Kamen Rider.

Yup, most that have low HP have more than Shuckle's. Like many defensive ones have stats at or close to 50, like Dusknoir and Spiritomb, as though that's about the absolute minimum something defensive should have. Heck, even _Dugtrio_ has more than that (and I was never exactly aware of that until this video).

hypno,sneasal,magcargo,delcatty,alteria,seviper,keckleon,lopunny,carnivine,luminion-pre gen 5 of Pokémon that stats are just kind of weird spreads or not as good as they should be. there’s a ton of other pre-physical special split Pokémon that have basically even attacking stats that could definitely be reworked something like seviper as an example. Past five there’s a lot less bad cookies.

Post GEN five I think some Pokémon that could really use some stat reworking are-maractus,swanna,Klingklang,cryagnol-G6 had mostly fine Pokémon nothing to really change. G7 had a bunch of Pokémon that were way too slow like Tucanon,gumshoose,Vikivolt,crabonible,lurantis-Shinotic. G8 somewhat remedied most of these problems there are a few obvious outliers though. Like why is theival so weak as a basic dark type. Same thing with eldigos. Once again, Boltonund and coalasul got that pre-physical special problem of having mirror stats. Grappleoct is slow for no reason. GEN nine doesn’t have too many stinkers spidops stats are way too low for gen 9. Daushbun should flip its physical attack and defense. squawkabilly has the same ability and type as staraptor and worst stats. And they found in the same area need to say more. Scovillan once again has that weird even attacking stats. Wug trio has gen one stats. And then obviously the one you touched. All in all, those are the Pokémon that I think could have some stats moved around or add some base stats. Or give a new ability something to make these Pokémon stand out a little more.

Honestly, one I’m very iffy about is Mega Pidgeot. Goes from a physical attacker to suddenly a special attacker. Sure, No Guard Hurricanes hurt a lot but from a design standpoint, I don’t really get it.

Oh yeah it's weird a few megas swapped their roles.. like if I was to run a special Pidgeot I gotta then make sure it's a mega to maximize that moveset.. (i just actually looked up mega pidgeot and *wow* that is a boost) Or some megas, despite having roles.. still get boosts to stats they don't use, Absol is a physical attacker but special attack still gets a 40 point boost from 75 to 115.. while physical gets only a 20 point boost from 130 to 150.. literally just putting those 40 points into the defenses, both 60 for Absol and mega, would have been way better... Medicham.. with pure power.. still gets a small boost to special attack... so many physical attackers get special boosts but special attackers don't get physical boosts.. it is so weird Funny enough, Glalie *gained* a role via mega evolution.. became a mixed attacker instead of a balanced.. thing which.. the ice type is only reason the balanced thing doesn't work tbh

It made it standout more. Instead becoming a better a better physical attacker and outclassing or failing to outclass the dozen other physical attacking normal/flying types, MPideot gets to fill a different role.

To be fair, Pidgeot only has a base 80 attack so it's not like it was hitting like a truck before getting a Mega... Boosting its base 70 special attack was a smart move, not only because of how broken Hurricane is, but also because Mega-Pidgeot can reliably counter ice and steel types with Heat Wave. It was used quite a bit in Gen 6 OU if I remember well

I think Honchkrow's stats are pretty disappointing. It gets SLOWER by evolving and can't even take a hit. Yeah, it is heavier than Murkrow, but that doesn't mean anything, geese and eagles for example are heavy birds yet are among the fastest. It should've at least been given 101 speed or kept Murkrow's 91 speed, the BST wouldn't even be that high compared to other cross gen evolutions, and it is really frail anyway, so taking it out wouldn't be an issue. Or if it HAS to be slower, at least make it bulkier, not as defensive as a wet napkin. And before someone says that the speed stat isn't top speed but rather reaction speed, Honchkrow is still a bird, and whoever has interacted with birds in real life knows how fast they react to stuff.

This may sound extreme, but give Bastiodon an ability that acts as a passive wide guard. Makes him immune to earthquake and gives him a defensive roll in doubles. He's a living shield, so it does fit with his design

I would make electrode a glass canon with spacial attack so the move electro ball which dose more damage the faster the Pokémon, hit even harder and maybe change explosion into a spacial attack because you don't get punch by a bomb exploding .

To be fair Glalie got it's buff in form of a mega evo and I like the idea of it being a wall breaker. The only thing it needs is that refrigerate boosts its moves.

Glad to see my ball of electric fun getting some support. Boosting its physical attack a lot makes sense with its rolling aesthetic: Rollout and Gyro Ball (even though it doesn't jive with its speed). But its explosiveness adds to it as well. A little bump to its Sp. Attack would help its Electro Ball as well.

I recall a romhack that took 30 speed from Electrode and gave it to Special Attack and made a new ability for it that increased its speed 1 stage every time. it wasnt a game breaker but it certainly helped.

Rampardos would greatly enjoy having its speed and hp stats swapped, so it has 58 base hp and 97 speed. That would actually make it incredibly dangerous, but I think its new extreme frailty would keep it from being broken, especially given its weakness to mach punch and aqua jet. Bastiodon could probably move 20 points from defense in to hp, which would help make metal burst a better option on it. Bastiodon is still probably screwed regardless of what we do to base stats though... x4 weaknesses to fighting and ground on a physical wall is just so devastating. I'd be happy with moving 20 physical attack to special attack for Froslass, giving it 100 special attack. It looks like a mage. Glalie, meanwhile, could take 20 special attack and put it in to its physical attack, give it +20 to both defenses, and make it ice/rock? Fix to electrode is clearly to give it +20 speed. I'm sure that would solve its issues.

Like something called "Mach Breaker" Base 80 Normal Attack that uses Speed for Damage Calculation AND give Electrode the ability Galvanize. Couple that with an Increase to its Attacking stats and a decrease to its Defensive stats and it would FINALLY become that Electrical Ball of Wanton Destruction it's claimed to be. And just to make sure it's not abused to High Hell. Only "Plane Shaped", a Few "Bird" Pokemon (like Fearow and Pidgeot) and Ninjask and Electrode will get it. Maaaaaaybe even Deoxys speed, but that's it

Truant scarf jolly Durant entrainments turn 1, swap to moody Glailie turn 2, protect turn 3, substitute turn 4, stall until moody maxes all stats, and sweep. Sure every battle takes 45 minutes, but you want that 100 win streak right?

With Glalie unironically being one of my favourite Pokemon it HURTS how bad its stat spread is, the Mega certainly helps although that comes with the issue of when it's gone they probably won't buff base Glalie so it's stuck being mediocre. At least if it's in Legends Z-A the Mega will be there so it'll get one game to be solid again.

There's something strange about how pokemon manages mixed attackers. In a game where youre incentivized to min max, either attack or special attack becomes irrelavant. They really put a spotlight on this with Ursaluna, which just gets to move its stats entirely to be a mixed attacker.

I love how some pokemon, especially ones you meet mid game, get so lost in development that their flaw remains painfully obvious years later. Not every pokemon has to be a landorus, but like shieldon, you would think that natural selection would eventually come for these oversights. You know how many physical moves they give that mixed attacking Kingdra by level? Its just wave crash, at level 72, and only in this newest gen. One of my favorites is seeing hidden ability meditite. If evolving at level 37 wasnt bad enough, you can set this effectively gimmick pokemon up without its sole redeeming factor

I think Electrode is so mediocre because it's a relic from Gen 1's crit mechanic where it's based on the Pokemon's speed. Gamefreak probably had a gimmick strategy in mind for Electrode, having a (relatively) high to deal insane damage but doing low damage if it fails

Hisui Electrode actually has great 4x weakness sniper, scarf or orb can kill 2x easily with a surprisingly strong offensive setup. Merge the two and you get a surprisingly flexible mon thats flexible in all the right ways if things like swamperts or quagsires are getting in the way or anything 4x electric weak.

Honestly Electrode did sometimes see use as a super fast Screens lead, since the 150 Speed meant unless you were using Prankster it was one of the fastest Screens Setter there was...until Regilekei stole that one niche from it by just having 200 Speed.

Kingra, just like Dragonite, should have been a pseudo legendary (600 BST) It means it should have 60 more BST to distribute. And seriously I'd just give it 10 base points to every stat. But if i were allowed to make it more fancy and not so "equal" i would instead give 15 points to attack and sp.attack and 30 to speed. People could think it doesn't need more speed because of swift swim doubling it anyway, but there are too many swift swim users with base 85 speed. Setting Kingra apart to make it faster then most swift swim users (having the same speed as Floatzel and only Barraskewda being faster swift swimmer) would be great, plus it could better utilize its other ability: Sniper, while not being slower then a charizard, so that it could use Focus Energy before being hit and then actually benefit from it on 2nd turn instead of being KO'ed before it could move. And i don't think it should be any tankier. Plus i also like that it can be both physical and special. Base 110 is respectable for attacking power, while 95 is slightly lacking. So there you go, the Kingrdra stats i wish we had: HP: 75 Attack: 110 Defense: 95 Sp.Attack: 110 Sp.Defense: 95 Speed: 115

Parasect, Shiinotic and wigglytuff If you thought they weren't done dirty enough already, just take a look at their abismelly low base stats i thought it was just the same base stats from their other counterparts, but no, other shroom mons like amoongus and breloom, and clefairy which is supposely the direct counterpart to wigglytuff have much higher stats so i really don't get why they made these quite late mons so bad at first and never bothered to fix them. i'm really praying they buff wigglytuff one day not just due to nostalgia for the best mistery dungeon game, but also because till this day it's the only normal/fairy (not counting azurill and mega audino for obvious reasons)

Look at them, do they really look like they should be stronger? Also Parasect and Wigglytuff are available early most of the time. Wigglytuff did get buffed in gen 6 though

@@ShadowtheKZbinr523 only fairy type mushroom, learns strenght sap and moonblast and looks like toad and its a crime that it only has 405 BST when other mushroom mons like amoonguss and breloom have more than 450 and for parasect the low stat total is just overkill, maybe it could still find a niche (away from fire or flying types) if it had a better stat total also since wigglytuff requires a rare evolution rock i'd assume it would be quite late game to have stats close to a regional rodent (even though it is based on a rabbit)

9:30 Honestly, Electrode is not that bad. Specifically with H-Electrode, going with max speed and special attack with a choice specs can do some good damage. Tack on a Tera fairy or ice, and with energy ball, thunderbolt, Tera blast, and volt switch it can do a lot for your team.

Gen 1-3 pokémon in general need stat redistribution. They were made in the times where types determined attack type, so many had very level attack stats to use different types for coverage. With that gone, you can easily dock 20-30 from one attack stat for the other (or speed, looking at you hoenn with mixed slow fragile attackers galore) in cases it makes no sense for it to have two attacking stats.

You said pokemon don't need to "break the mold" when talking abour Veluza. A pokemon with MOLD BREAKER. As it is right now, you're better off running Veluza as a bulky pokemon so it can actually live to Fillet Away and then start attacking.

the Speed stat is SO misunderstood!! it's not about how fast they run/move, necessarily, but rather how quickly they can *attack*. I'm not just making it up; the evidence is clearly seen with any Pokemon who shoot missiles (Mega Sceptile, Dragapault) or are springy (Ambipom, Purrugly).

SCEPTILE!! here's why, It has decent stats but its movepool doesnt take advantage of its high special attack. There's no coverage to use its special attack while it gets a variety of attack moves. but its attack stat is subpar. It suffered from the physical-special split where grass was a special type in gen 3 but now in gen 4 damage was considered physical-special based on the moves rather than the types. I'm pretty sure there are other pokemon suffering from this 'syndrome'

Gen 1 and 2 mons and some gen 3 suffer from what I like to call "early gen stat spread" where they put points wherever because they used to be able to max all stats, so spreads were balanced with that in mind, and then the pattern continued into gen 3 because they didn't need to ask whether or not a mon having no good stats and a type its stats can't even use offensively before

I don't know if I would call it "subpar", but it always felt weird to me that they made Empoleon a Special attacker, considering it has sharp blades for wings and had Defiant as a hidden ability until the Gen 9 DLC.

Theivul. Why is it a special attacker that learns nearly no special attack naturally? Like, it only learns Snarl naturally but it's base sp attack is 87, compared to it's regular attack at 58, it's not like it even learns that many status moves to take advantage of it's high sp Def, it gets Hone Claws, Tail Whip, Nasty Plot and Parting Shot. So like you could set up Nasty plots but you're a dark type mon with a wimpy defense stat. Honestly, I think Theivul would be a pretty decent mon if you just swap it's attack and Special Attack.

I used Electrode on my team last time I replayed through pokemon X. I had fun with it but i definitely do think in the modern games going forward they really need to buff a lot of old pokemon as power creep is pretty crazy nowadays.
