-Lyrics Smells like autumn, smells like leaves You don't know that you'll rust and not belong so much And then get, left alone Suck it up, take a ride and take a walk And don't you know that old folks' homes smell so much, like my own The hotcha girls at the palisades Dime store keets, pretty birds, pretty mouths Mama's little truck stop rose, her dancy feet her happy laugh We were dropping dimes on the ponies in the cul-de-sac, Casting shadows throwing sparks. (The mail came from miles away The postal man is always late, and we wait) We left our teeth marks on the barrel of the gun The clipper ship across your chest (Glass eyes and wooden teeth, the engine rusted in deep, deep sleep It waits, to awake) Turns out the pony only had one trick, a wink for the truck stop boys (Tight lipped with a big ol' mouth, The government workers all headed south while it rained) They learned it all from the Polaroids (Outside with the wooden teeth, the engine rusted in disbelief, away) Smells like autumn, smells like leaves You don't know that you'll rust and not belong so much And then get, left alone Suck it up, take a ride and take a walk And don't you know that old folks' homes smell so much, like my own Time bends light Paint's all peeling Wait outside Take four rights The hotcha girls in the palisades Dime store keets, pretty birds, pretty mouths Glass eyes and the wooden teeth, The engine's rusted in deep, deep sleep, it waits The mail came from miles away, the postal man was always late, And we wait Tight lipped with a big ol' mouth, The government workers all headed south while it rained Glassy eyes and wooden teeth, The engine's rusted in deep, deep sleep It waits, it waits, it waits, to awake

The song appears to capture a sense of nostalgia, decay, and the passage of time. The lyrics seem to evoke a feeling of autumn and its associated imagery. The repeated line "Smells like autumn, smells like leaves" could symbolize the changing seasons and the fleeting nature of moments. The theme of rust and not belonging suggests a sense of deterioration and the inevitable decay of things, including relationships and experiences. The notion of being left alone and having to "suck it up" implies a resignation to the realities of life. References to old folks' homes, truck stops, and government workers heading south could hint at the passage of time and the way places and people change over the years. The repeated imagery of "glass eyes and wooden teeth" and the engine rusting in sleep could metaphorically represent the aging process and the slowing down of life's momentum. The mention of the "ponies in the cul-de-sac" and learning from Polaroids implies a sense of innocence and memory, as if looking back on simpler times. The repeated lines about the postal man being late and waiting could symbolize anticipation, longing, and the slow pace of life. The song seems to blend moments of reflection, regret, and observation of life's cyclical nature. It touches on themes of longing, decay, and the passage of time, ultimately creating a sense of wistful introspection. The repetition of certain phrases throughout the song adds to its meditative quality, inviting listeners to consider the deeper meanings within the lyrics.

It's not Isaac, Ugly Casanova featured Isaac and also the lead vocalist from Holopaw. So like in this song, for example, the crooning voice is the dude from Holopaw. Isaac's vocals on this one sound pretty much like his default affect from Modest Mouse.
If songs like these were mainstream worldwide the planet would ascend to something of certain likeness of heaven itself

either that, or we'd all be just as clueless and vulnerable as Isaac in these songs.
@tommyjoe977 жыл бұрын
large_cat oh yeah like mainstream music isnt clueless vulnerability at it's finest at least there is a message behind everyone of Brock's lyrics and in this song's case the fact that he is even singing is at least provinig he isn't an egotistical arrogent asshole like most dime-a-dozen singers in today's time.

i've always been a big fan of modest mouse and ugly casanova alike, but i think isaac's songwriting really peaked with this album. his earlier work up through "moon and antarctica" was compelling and provacative, but a lot of the lyrics bordered a bit too much on word association and a striking chorus rather than a cohesive lyrical whole (look no further than the six or so tracks on "lonesome crowded west" that just have isaac repeating the same phrases over and over again). his work from "good news" on lost its edge, in part because he was in a much stabler, more comfortable place. don't get me wrong, i still love his post-casanova anthology, but it doesn't hit quite the same. ugly casanova was kind of his last chance to really experiment, it feels like.
